State & Private Forestry Mountain pine beetle populations reached epidemic levels in 1972 in the Stoney Creek drainage, Ninemile District, Lolo National Forest, Montana. A total of 8,082 trees with an estimated volume loss of 34,356 board feet has occurred from 1972 to 1974. Buildup ratio was 1:1.2 from 1972 to 1973, and 1:1.8 from 1973 to 1974. Losses are expected to increase in 1975. Commercial thinning is recommended in unthinned stands. State & Private Forestry, Flavell, Thomas H., Tunnock, Scott Aerial and ground surveys to detect and evaluate forest insect and disease conditions in North Dakota were made during June 1977 by personnel from the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Insect and Disease Management staff and the Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station. A forest tent caterpillar outbreak in the Turtle Mountains was estimated to cover 195,000 acres in this popular vacation area. Siberian elm shelterbelts throughout the state were heavily defoliated by the spring and fall cankerworms. Cottonwood trees along the Missouri River near Bismarck were dying from a combination of soil compaction and possible nitrogen poisoning in cattle feedlots. Lowlevel color infrared photography was used to delineate root disease centers within National Forest inventory subcompartments. Suspected root disease centers were ground checked to determine associated fungi and insects and verify accuracy of photointerpretation. More than 3,800 hectares (about 1.0 percent) of commercial forest land were occupied by large root disease centers. Most root disease occurred in well-stocked, pole to small sawtimber stands and medium-stocked, two-storied stands. The major root pathogen associated with disease centers was Armillaria mellea. Phellinus weirii and Phaeolus schweinitzii were found less frequently. Major bark 1 beetle associates included Dendroctonus ponderosae on lodgepole pine, D. pseudotsugae on Douglas-fir, Dryocoetes confusus on subalpine fir, and Scolytus ventralis on grand fir. Defoliation was estimated following the feeding period in 1971 and a linear regression model was computed using defoliation as the dependent variable and egg density as the independent variable (Bousfield and Ciesla 1971). The purpose of this study was to provide a basis for predicting future population levels. The objective of this evaluation is to test the prediction model, forecast 1972 defoliation potential, and to obtain additional biological information on the infestation.
