A survey in 1974 showed that 40.4 percent of 690 trees examined contained active ash borer attacks. Forty-three out of 140 windbreaks were sampled and each one was infested. There was an average of 1.8 attacks per infested tree. The survey indicated that the infestation will continue in 1974. Plans are being made to test several chemicals on the ash borers at the Bowman-Haley damsite. Estimates on height growth loss or nontop-killed trees was not attempted. Although spruce did not have as high a percentage of trees top-killed as the true firs, it did result in a greater amount when expressed in number of years. This may have been because spruce was larger and the growth model projected slower height growth on these trees. Subalpine fir had the highest percentage of host trees top-killed (21.2 percent), but the period affected was the shortest. Subalpine fir average length of top-kill for both light and moderate severity classes was less than the other species, therefore not as many years were involved in height growth loss. Height growth of Douglas-fir was not affected in this stand. This confirms previous observations that Douglas-fir is not severely damaged in mixed host types in northern Idaho. State & Private Forestry Two blends (Natural and Phillips) of the western pine shoot borer pheromone, formulated as Hercon Luretape, were applied to six ponderosa pine plantations in northern Idaho and western Montana in 1984. The treatment was approximately 21.6 grams of pheromone per hectare. Significant reductions in damage have occurred in all treated plantations. Damage has been reduced most in plantations that are not surrounded by pine stands which provide a reservoir of moths that can reinvade treated areas. The best results to date have been a reduction of infested terminals from 50.9 to 1.6 percent after 2 years of treatment. Population trends in nearby check areas were either static or increasing. Treatment effects of both the Natural and Phillips formulations were significantly different from the control at the 99 percent level. However, these treatments were not different from each other.
