Winemaker Eric Weisinger and the late Arnold Kohnert on the crush pad at Weisinger’s of Ashland as fruit from Kohnert’s Pompadour Vineyard is delivered. Kohnert’s vineyard, later managed by Randy Gold, is used in Weisinger’s Petite Pompadour Bordeaux blend. Kohnert, one of the pioneers of Rogue Valley viticulture, was known for producing the best Bordeaux grapes in the valley at is vineyard established east of Ashland in 1983, where he planted six acres to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Semillon. Kohnert kept meticulous records of his vineyard’s climate and production, replacing one clone with another to improve quality. Sharing his experience with others, he continually strove to improve winegrowing in the Rogue Valley. It has taken three generations of “Joseph Ginets” to make one adventurous Frenchman’s American dream come true. In 1890, the first Joseph Ginet left his home in the French Alps to see the world. The Ginet family owned vineyards, which the region is famous for. Once in America, he worked his way across the country looking for a suitable region to start his own vineyard. In 1898, Joseph Ginet found a neglected orchard outside the town of Jacksonville, Oregon on Sterling Creek. He salvaged the trees and established himself in his new home. In 1904, he returned to Savoie and brought back grape cuttings. Joseph made wine and sold fruit and grape plants. He named his business "Plaisance Orchard." Today, the third generation of Ginets is making wine once again. Joseph Ginet’s grandson, Joe, and his wife Suzi, have imported plants from the family vineyards in St. Jean de la Porte, and UC Davis, and are fulfilling Joseph’s dream in America. Joseph Ginet is again making wine and offering plants for sale from Plaisance Ranch, "with great pleasure."
