Author: Honkanen, Asmo, Ahvonen, Anssi, Veneranta, Lari The fishery barometer surveys the economic prospects and trends of fishery enterprises in Finland. The barometer survey was developed on the basis of the general business surveys. The survey has been carried out annually since year 2000. Here we study if the results could be explained by external economic information or internal results. The external economic information is based on the official account statistics data. The internal comparison is made by comparing if the entrepreneurs_ opinions of previous years economy explains the prospects for the coming year. The survey population consists of all fisheries sector enterprises on the business register of Statistics Finland. Here the fishery sector includes the whole value chain from fishing, aquaculture and processing to wholesale and retail trade. The results showed that for the fisheries sector enterprises, the turnover information inquired by a telephone survey differed to some extend from the factual information compiled later on the basis of the accounts statistics. After that the food market has changed radically. At the same time the eating away from home has become increasingly common. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of fish consumption in the Finnish catering service sector. The focus is to evaluate the period during rapid market changes. The estimation of fish consumption was based on a statistical sample and the data was collected in 1988, 1991, 1994 and 2005. It was found that the fish consumption has increased 30 per cent during the last ten years. The growth is exclusively based on imported fish. All types of imported fish products were used for meals more than earlier, but the consumption of fresh fish products has grown most extensively. The consumption of salmon and salmon trout increased most, while domestic caught Baltic herring is considerably less important than earlier. The frequency of serving fish meals has also increased. The abolition of national trade restrictions on fresh fish has inevitably had an impact on the consumption of fish in the catering sector. A trend-and-confidence indicator describing the overall economic trend and expectations of enterprises was calculated from the means of balance figures of questions concerning change in financial standing, turnover and investments of an enterprise. The results can be divided into fishing, aquaculture, processing, wholesale and retail trade, i.e. to the whole production-processing-commerce chain. In February 2000, the confidence towards coming 12 months in the Finnish fishery enterprises was encouraged. The only sector that had deteriorated during the past year was fishing, however the outlook of fishing for the coming year was more promising. The results are based on a sample of about 300 enterprises representing a survey population of about 1070 fishery enterprises. The reliability of the results is discussed.
