How we live in cities is one of the greatest challenges of our time. This marketing plan introduces a way to deploy EcoDistricts, an innovation that will have potentially the greatest positive impact on green energy, water, construction, planning and transportation thus far. It can help to achieve the cost and resource savings required to serve the massive numbers of people migrating to cities. This marketing plan is intended to explore the potential market for EcoDistricts Projects and form a strategy to capture that market. The report analyzes the target market – cities concentrating on existing neighborhoods with projects based on private funding, and provides customer and competition analyses. The plan concludes with a strategy constituting pricing and partnership plans as well as a communication plan to build brand awareness for EcoDistricts projects. The Portland Sustainability Institute (PoSI) created EcoDistricts, a five phase approach for accelerating sustainable neighborhood development. EcoDistricts aims to create and implement a replicable, exportable, scalable, and economically viable framework for the resource-efficient regeneration of existing cities. This proposal will introduce and demonstrate how EcoDistricts will execute a plan to build and develop regenerative and resilient cities that are culturally thriving, energy and resource hyper-efficient, and economically sustainable [1]. An eco-district is the next generation in green building design and expands the idea of a single building to an entire urban region. One of the key issues with eco-districts is the idea of net-zero energy, which is the requirement that the district must produce as much green energy as it uses. Since eco-districts encompass a larger geographic area, there are more options available in the design, location, sizing and financing for a green energy system. The question posed in this project is whether it is more cost effective to have multiple systems spread across multiple small sites (such as roof tops) or have a few large systems located on a single large open site. The LP model for this project looked at minimizing cost while still achieving the system size goals set by the demand load of the model. The district that was evaluated was a modified version of the PSU Eco District. The district area was modified to include two large open site options, but fewer buildings. Data for the model was collected from a number of sources, including area and location information from Google Earth and pricing information from accepted industry costing estimate guides. The LP model was developed using the Excel Solver program. The results of the project were interesting. A first pass analysis of the results showed that the smaller sites were the more cost effective design scenario. But further analysis of the numbers showed that the high cost of the large site was due mostly to the interconnect cost required because the site was located farther away from the point of usage than the smaller sites. This result emphasized the importance of both district selection criteria, as well as the financial advantages of using existing utility transmission infrastructure instead of developing new infrastructure for the district. There are future add-ons that could be done as a continuation of this project. The biggest is a more advanced financial model that includes not only more detailed costing design scenarios, but also includes some of the tax and grant incentives associated with green energy. We explore modern R&D tools and methodologies through literature research. These tools and methodologies are then aligned with “External Variables and Internal Conditions” as identified by Keizer et al. and a framework is created. [10] This framework is applied to two case studies. The first case study examines HECO, the Hawaiian Electric company, representing a small enterprise. The second case study examines Logitech Inc, a consumer electronics company, representing a medium enterprise. The results of this analysis show that the proposed framework for understanding SME R&D programs is viable. Both case studies provided examples of the variables, challenges and opportunities faced by small and medium sized R&D programs. Areas for future research include a stronger understanding of the impact of education, motivation and experience on the output of an R&D organization and the flaws in the current funding system for energy research. The issue of cooking stoves is a significant one since the most commonly used stove and fuel type has serious health, environmental and economic downsides. As a result, there is increasing attention and resources being given to the idea of providing communities and households with stove and fuel types that are more efficient, produce less pollution, and are more easily maintained. There were 24 technologies stove and fuel combinations considered in the project. These technologies were evaluated against four criteria – efficiency, emissions, cost, and job creation. The source of information was ratings by experts specifically chosen based on their area of expertise. Although the surveys were sent to 15 experts, only five returned them in time for inclusion in the results of this paper. Due to the low number of returned surveys, each technology was only rated by one expert, instead of multiple expert rating per technology as was originally intended in the design of the model.
