Policy fails to support innovative startup firms, instead favoring large established firms. Education fails to incubate innovative thought. Cultural and Political Aversion to Risk does not foster an innovative and entrepreneurial environment. Financial Practices are not unilateral and remain independently structured, nation by nation, but are centrally supported. Nowadays, mobile phones have become a tool for entertainment and information, and not only a tool for making calls or sending text messages [1]. In this paper, Google’s strategy for Android will be discussed which created a competitive advantage for Google in the mobile devices industry. In addition, Porter’s five forces analysis will be utilized to analyze Google’s strategy for Android as Porter’s five forces analysis is an applicable tool to study the business strategy of a company. Furthermore, a SWOT analysis will be applied to Android to further investigate Google’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in order to look for areas of improvements that can help Google maintain its competitive advantage. In general, this paper will evaluate Google’s strategy for promoting and developing one of its core competencies which is the Android operating system. Porter’s five forces model will be used as a framework to evaluate the strategy that is being adopted by Google. The model will show the big picture of the mobile devices industry which is a highly competitive market. This study is conducted to holistically evaluate the critical elements of R&D Management—R&D Planning, R&D Organization, R&D Portfolio Management, R&D Project Management, and R&D Knowledge Transfer—by assessing R&D management from different sectors. This framework puts the spotlights of R&D management on three well-known firms— Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), Intel Corporation, and Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA). The research methodology is based on an intensive literature review by delving into the literature to have a full understanding of the critical elements of R&D management. In addition, R&D managers from the three firms were interviewed in order to gain insight on how R&D management functions within the critical elements of R&D management. A questionnaire was developed, and the questions asked were at the macro scale to avoid confidentiality concerns that might arise. The research findings highlight the fact that despite the differences among the firms’ R&D orientation—stemmed from company’s size, number of employees, nature of the industry, and budget being spent on R&D—the pipeline of R&D management of the three firms are almost the same at the macro scale. This objective is met through the use a linear regression analysis and the development of a non-linear goal programming model.
