In the most fundamental sense, the interaction of these two urban roles determines the growth of metropolitan areas and patterns of land use and settlement within those urban areas. Within this framework of metropolitan functions, five factors have strongly affected American urban settlement patterns. The first section of this report briefly introduces these broad forces. The central section traces in detail the ways in which the factors have shaped settlement and land use in the Portland area over the last 150 years. The concluding section suggests new ways in which these five basic factors may operate in the coming decades and briefly analyzes possible new effects on the region's settlement patterns.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: The Urban West and the Twenty-First Century Author: Abbott, Carl Year: 1993 In 1964 Oregon novelist Ken Kesey published Sometimes a Great Notion, the impassioned story of a fiercely (even pathologically) independent family of loggers on the southern Oregon coast. The novel is much admired by Oregonians, who read it as a tribute to the vanishing American pioneer. The urban West appears only by implication in the form of a fumbling labor organizer who longs to return to the civilized cities of California. My argument is that what we see is what we're going to get. That is, the coming decades are likely to see the American West continue to work through the impacts of the third urban revolution. It will be no more possible to re-create the world of Hank Stamper and the loggers of the Wakonda Auga watershed than the worlds of William Bent or Juan de Oñate. In particular, I want to touch on four points: (1) The end of "urbanization" in the American West; (2) the consolidation of control functions in a handful of supercities; (3) the continued "urbanizing" of what used to be the western backcountry; (4) the policy-making environment of western cities. As an introduction, it will briefly review the process of introduction and acceptance of the term. It will then explore possible reasons for the "discovery" of the Sunbelt, its seemingly quick success, and its persistent use after it has slipped to the status of cliche in national journalism. The underlying concern is to understand why Americans took the new terminology so readily to heart by examining what it is that "Sunbelt" explains or implies that lies beyond the connotations of our more traditional regional terms. LeGuin, by political novelist Ayn Rand, and by mainstream thriller writers Stephen King and Justin Cronin.
