During summer and fall of 1981 to 1983, mark-recapture was conducted in riparian and upland habitats within old-growth and mature forests in the Cascade Range of Oregon. Number of individuals and species richness were greater in riparian than upland habitat. For most species, the mean adult weights and the percentages of reproductively active males and females were greater in riparian habitat. Insectivora had higher numbers of captures, densities, and biomass per ha in riparian habitat. Four rodents had higher numbers of captures, densities and biomass per ha in upland habitat. An additional five rodents had higher values for these parameters in riparian habitat. Both mustelids captured had higher numbers of captures, densities, and biomass in riparian habitat. Three sympatric voles, Microtus oregoni, Microtus richardsoni, and Clethrionomys californicus, were studied relative to microhabitat separation because they are potential competitors due to similarities in morphology and life history. Discriminant analysis identified significant separation based on cover of lichen and deciduous trees and distance from the creek. Specifically, C. californicus selected microhabitats with a high percent cover of lichen and western hemlock and low percent cover of deciduous trees. M. oregoni selected microhabitats high in deciduous and evergreen herbs and deciduous shrubs. Microhabitats selected by M. richardsoni had a high soil exposure, greater length of recently fallen logs, and reduced cover of Douglas-fir. To investigate patterns of competition, Peromyscus maniculatus, the most abundant small mammal, was removed from four grids in 1983. All species of the order Insectivora increased with the removal of P. maniculatus relative to most parameters measured. Captures were significantly higher on removal grids for Sorex monticolus, Sorex bendirii, Sorex trowbridgii, and Scapanus orarius. Two rodents, Zapus trinotatus and Glaucomys sabrinus, also increased with the removal of P. maniculatus, suggesting responses to release from exploitative competition. Tamias townsendii had significantly fewer captures and individuals on experimental grids. Removal of P. maniculatus left T. townsendii the most abundant small mammal on experimental grids. It is possible that predators "switched" to T. townsendii thereby effectively depressing densities of T. townsendii on the removal grids. The Pacific Treefrog (Pseudacris regilla) is commonly encountered throughout the Pacific Northwest and can be an indicator for ecosystem health. At each life stage P. regilla utilizes a different habitat and therefore it is important to understand habitat use at all life stages to properly manage the ecosystem, however, few studies have been conducted on the juvenile form. To determine juvenile P. regilla riparian habitat use, and thus create appropriate habitat management plans, field work must be conducted. Transect surveys were conducted at two highly disturbed ephemeral ponds with a variety of open and dense vegetative riparian habitats in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. P. regilla was found in the highest abundance in habitat shaded by a thin border of Oregon Ash around the pond perimeter, and was composed mainly of Himalayan blackberry (Rubus armeniacus). This habitat provided a moist region where P. regilla could avoid desiccation and possibly predation. Rubus armeniacus is non-native and often found in highly disturbed ecosystems. Pseudacris regilla’s use of R. armeniacus as habitat suggests that P. regilla is a generalist species capable of utilizing invasive plant species to its advantage. My goal is to understand the dynamics of a coupled human and natural system. The central question is how people in the community of Scio, Oregon perceive flooding, water quality, and riparian habitat. I use the concept of cognitive models to identify and describe individual models of the environment, while cultural models explain and describe shared models of the environment. I utilize the ethnographic techniques of 22 semi-structured interviews, six months of participant observation, and a review of secondary data to identify cognitive and cultural models. I developed two hypotheses in order to approach the question of how people perceive flooding, water quality, and riparian habitat. The first hypothesis is that landowners who have high levels of risk perception and adaptability are more likely to respond to flooding, water quality, and riparian habitat. I found that even though landowners had high levels of risk perception the variable did not necessarily translate into action in the form of adaptability. The second hypothesis is that cognitive models have a pattern of variation that can be identified by land use. Although land use is a small-scale pattern, I found the more prevalent pattern of two shared cultural models to exist in the community of Scio, Oregon. The first model is characterized as human-centered, particularistic, short-term, locally relevant, stewardship focused, rural-oriented, and informed by experience. The second model is characterized as wildlife-centered, holistic, long-term, and informed by science. Local residents overwhelmingly aligned with the first model while agencies and scientists aligned with the second model. The pattern suggests a wide division between the understanding of local and scientific knowledge, therefore, I recommend a multi-objective management solution that mediates between local and scientific knowledge.
