It was hypothesized that individuals who hold more positive views of their family of origin health will also view themselves and, consequently, the divorced single mother more positively. Participants were 170 college students, 113 of whom lived only with their biological parents, and 57 of whom lived at sometime in their lives with a divorced single mother. Four instruments were used to collect the data, including the Family of Origin Health Scale (Hovestadt et al., 1985), the Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965), the Perception of Divorced Mother Scale (Ganong & Coleman, 1983), and a demographic questionnaire. A series of hierarchical regression analyses were used in data analyses. Generally, results indicated that family type made no major impact on participants' perceptions of the divorced single mother. Among participants in the biological parent group and the divorced single mother group, family of origin health significantly predicted more positive perceptions of the divorced single mother. In this analysis, the regression model for the biological parent group was significant, while for the divorced single mother group it was not. Self-esteem was not found to contribute significantly to participants' perceptions of the divorced single mother, and thus did not mediate the relationship between family of origin health and perceptions of the divorced single mother. Finally, among the biological parent group, amount of interaction with single parent families headed by a divorced single mother significantly predicted more positive perceptions of the divorced single mother. Among the divorced single mother group, however, amount of time lived in a single parent family headed by a divorced mother did not significantly predict their perceptions of the divorced single mother. Statistics indicate a growing number of persons who occupy the divorce status in late life. Many of these persons enter late life in the divorced status, others are divorced after age 60. This study focuses upon those who divorce after age 60. Although previous work does not shed much light upon late life divorce, it yields a clear picture of the characteristics, process and consequences of divorce for younger persons. Assumptions derived from work with younger divorcing populations provide a basis for the conceptual framework used in this study. A description of who gets divorced, causes, process and consequences of divorce in late life is provided. A model which predicts post divorce adjustment also is tested. Findings affirm similarities between younger and older divorcing persons. Persons divorcing in late life generally were urban residing, had low occupational status, few assets, weak religious and kinship ties. Generally, in this study divorce resulted from a long-standing lack of emotional gratification aggravated by some type of precipitating event. Few subjects perceived themselves to be victims of the divorce; most had ambivalent feelings about getting divorced and mixed experiences during the divorce. The legal, economic, social and psychological consequences are greater for those who resisted the divorce. Those subjects also were less successful in resolving problems and exhibited higher levels of stress subsequent to the divorce. A curvilinear relationship between age and post divorce adjustment was found. Those in mid life (45-65) were affected more adversely than those in later life. Sex, consequences and type of divorce experienced accounted for 49 per cent of the differences found in post divorce adjustment. Overall, the data suggest that: (1) females have more negative divorce experiences and suffer greater negative consequences than do males; (2) managed conflict is an important part of successful adjustment; and (3) society does not recognize the complications presented by late life divorce. Parental conflict can be reduced utilizing alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes such as mediation and collaborative divorce. The purpose of this dissertation was to produce two manuscripts examining the role of the child specialist in ADR divorce. The first manuscript identified, through an extensive literature review, the effects of divorce on children; the advantages of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) divorce processes; the child’s voice in divorce; and the emerging role of the child specialist, the mental health professional who brings the voice of the child into divorce. There is no research on the role of the child specialist. The second manuscript is a classical Delphi study focused on the responsibilities, tasks, and skills of child specialists in ADR. Careful screening and recruitment offered 12 expert participants whose first round qualitative survey generated 41 items in the 3 categories. Likert-scale ranking for the second and third quantitative rounds resulted in 38 (92%) of the 41 items meeting a 70% consensus level. This dissertation addressed a gap in the existing research; expanded knowledge and understanding of the child specialist’s role in family law; presented the perspectives of diverse experts in the field, adding to our knowledge base; and may guide in effectively training family counselors as child specialists in the promising, interdisciplinary field of ADR, aiding scholarship in counselor education. As will be demonstrated below, very little is actually known about the process of divorce or about its impact on the members of the family. Of particular concern is the effect of divorce on the children invo1ved, and the decisions and practice of the divorcing parents regarding their subsequent parenting relationship to the children. The authors of this report intend to study a random sample of divorcing couples and to derive a descriptive analysis of their perceptions of the proper role of the noncustodial parent (usually the father) in regard to the child rearing process following separation and divorce. We will work with that portion of available data for which we have information from both parents in the divorcing family. Particular attention will be paid to issues of congruence or noncongruence in perceptions between the two members of the coparental couple (including each member's judgement of his/ her partner's perceptions of the issues. We believe that the ability of the divorcing parents to provide a stable and cooperative relationship in their parental roles is very important for the children to be assisted in adjusting to the divorce. Given this assumption the extent of congruence or noncongruence in the perceptions of the parents about the role of the noncustodial parent in postdivorce child rearing may be very important in determining the degree of cooperation between them and the subsequent ease of adjustment of the children to the new family role relationships. One of the goals of most group process programs is to generate peer support which in turn is hoped to facilitate the process of divorce adjustment. Evaluations of such programs are few and limited. This study is an evaluation of a group process divorce adjustment intervention entitled, Divorce Recovery Workshop. This intervention includes education and support components. Two different methods of workshop delivery are compared and analyzed to determine the influence of support on the process of divorce adjustment. One method includes a small group component, the other does not. This workshop, offered during 1992/3, drew participants from the greater Salem, Oregon area who had recently divorced. This study examines four areas of divorce adjustment, comparing the two methods of workshop delivery, as well as participant experiences of support. These four included depression, degree of control, self-esteem, and persistence of attachment. Participants were administered pre-workshop and post-workshop questionnaires. Standardized measures included the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (Radloff, 1977), the Rosenberg Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) for assessing self-esteem, and the Acceptance of Marital Termination Scale (Thompson and Spanier, 1983). Nonstandardized measures included the Degree of Control After Divorce Scale, the Support List adapted from a social support measure (Bengtson and Mangen, 1988), the Support Scale adapted from a medical intervention peer support measure (Pratt, 1984), and a brief Satisfaction with Support Scale. This evaluation revealed positive outcomes for participants in the four areas of divorce adjustment regardless of method of program delivery. Participants also showed increased experiences of support attributable to the intervention. However, additional research is needed to establish the relationship between support and divorce adjustment. The lack of a control group should lead to caution to generalizing these results. This description entailed collecting information about the process itself and then typologizing divorces on the basis of their trajectories to dissolution. One hundred and seven divorced individuals were interviewed. This interview consisted of three parts. First, participants graphed their relationships from the recognition of significant marital dissatisfaction until the divorce was final. Second, participants divided these trajectories into three time periods: recognition, discussion, and action periods of the divorce process. Third, participants completed questionnaires that assessed the relationship dimensions of love, maintenance, ambivalence, conflict, trust, marital satisfaction, and comparison level for alternatives at each time period. Three types of marital dissolution were identified using cluster analysis. Rapid dissolutions reported the highest mean chance of divorce and slope during the initial two periods of the divorce process. Extended dissolutions were characterized by longer recognition and discussion periods and small slopes. Extended dissolutions were the most turbulent and more critical events were downturns than in the other types. Gradual dissolutions were moderate in comparison to rapid and extended dissolutions. No significant differences were found between participants from different types on the relationship dimensions. Significant differences as a function of who initiated the dissolution process were found on love and marital satisfaction. Initiators reported less love for their partners and were less satisfied with the marriage than noninitiators and mutual divorces. Significant differences were found by time period on all relationship dimensions. Multiple regressions were used to determine what relationship dimensions were predictors of the chance of divorce and the acceptance of marital termination at each of the three time periods. Conflict, maintenance, and marital satisfaction were the strongest predictors of the chance of divorce during the recognition and discussion periods. Ambivalence, trust, and love were the best predictors of the chance of divorce during the action period. A generally accepted belief is that divorce produces negative consequences in the lives of children as shown in their behavior. However, recently a number of studies have suggested that divorce need not be a negative experience, at least to the degree most people feel it is. Factors that influence the effects on children include: the intensity of the conflict between the divorcing partners; the degree to which parents demonstrate concern for the children and help them prepare for the separation; the child’s attachment to the custodial parent; and the level of maturity and general personality characteristics of the child. The primary goal of the study presented here is to determine the extent to which negative behavior changes in children are visible immediately following a divorce. The primary goal of the study presented here is to determine the extent to which negative behavior changes in children are visible immediately following a divorce. Additionally we wish to describe those changes and determine their frequency. Finally, we wish to relate such changes to certain to certain social variables including economic status and age and sex of the children. Close

Data to be collected in the present study were to be much more specific and much less impressionistic. Although it was considered desirable to obtain a general picture of the family dissolution as early in the divorce process as possible, special consideration was given to issues pertaining to the visiting relationship of the minor child and the non-custodial parent. In addition, the present research not only intended to gather descriptive content about divorcing parents and their children, but to give primary emphasis to assessing the reliability of the findings.
