Like rural residents in other places, people in rural Oregon have expressed concern about the demographic shifts occurring in their communities. Principally they are concerned about youth leaving and not returning. This analysis uses recent Census Bureau data to describe, in detail, the demographic changes occurring in rural Oregon. Particular attention is paid to migration’s role in driving these changes. Interviews of community leaders in rural Oregon reveal how rural Oregon is responding to, and thinking about, these demographic changes. Results indicate that there is no comprehensive public policy in place to address the concern about demographic change.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Understanding the Role of Patient Activation in the Association between Patient Socio-Economic Demographics and Patient Experience Author: Oi, Katsuya Year: 2012 This study focuses on the association between patient characteristics, which include both demographic and contextual factors, and patients' experiences with health care. The pre-existing literature provides rich information about patients' various demographics related to patient experience. Despite the abundance of empirical evidence showing that patients' demographics do affect how they perceive their health care. However, there is little to no empirical knowledge explaining the significance of such factors. As the existing literature points out the need for taking into contextual factors such as patient's beliefs, attitudes, skills that are pertinent to dealing with health care, my study proposes patient activation as such a contextual factor that explains the association between patient demographics and patient experience. Findings suggest that patient activation is a strong predictor of two patient experience measures: patients' rating of doctor-patient communication and their self-reported difficulties in getting needed care. However, it is also observed that the mediating effects of patient activation vary by the two dimensions of patient experiences. Though this study demonstrates that promoting patient activation may be able to normalize how patients report the quality of doctor-patient interaction, further research is needed to address access to care issues. The central focus of this study was to determine the differences in perceived burnout among Oregon high school basketball coaches when grouped by selected demographic and job related variables. Findings helped achieve a better understanding of the individual and organizational variables that either promote or reduce the occurrence of burnout among high school coaches. A random sample of 204 varsity basketball coaches responded to a two part research instrument consisting of a demographic data sheet and the Maslach Burnout inventory (MBI). The major measuring instrument, the MBI, provided a measure of perceived burnout in terms of the frequency and intensity of Emotional Exhaustion. Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. Coaches were grouped according to the following demographic and job related variables: 1. age, 2. sex, 3. school size, 4. sex of team coached, 5. number of years at present job, 6. total number of years in the coaching field, 7. additional coaching responsibilities, 8. extent of teaching responsibilities, 9. hours per week devoted to basketball during the season, 10. weeks per year devoted to basketball during the off-season, 11. winning percentage, 12. perceived adequacy of the basketball budget. A one-way multivariate analysis of variance was conducted for each demographic variable serving as the independent variable and the burnout factors serving as the dependent variables. Where there was an overall significant difference across groups, the univariate F ratios were examined to determine which burnout measures contributed to these differences. Findings did not support the hypothesis that significant differences in perceived burnout exist among Oregon high school basketball coaches when grouped by the selected demographic and job related variables. Additionally, mean scores for the burnout subscales indicated low to moderate levels of burnout when all demographic categories were compared against normative data.
