To date, many questions regarding the economic feasibility of offshore aquaculture, and in particular offshore bluefin tuna farming in the United States, remain unanswered. This research assesses the economic feasibility of an offshore bluefin tuna aquaculture industry located on the East Coast of the US by developing a dynamic stochastic adaptive bioeconomic model of such an offshore enterprise. The bioeconomic model incorporates the biological constraints of the species, the interaction of relevant economic parameters and constraints, and stochastic sources of risk, to solve for the profit maximizing behavior of a farmed bluefin tuna producer. This research identifies the optimal harvest schedule for an offshore bluefin tuna farming facility that maximizes the net present value of the operation under a variety of economic, biological and regulatory conditions. Economic feasibility is analyzed using profitability indicators including net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR). This research is relevant given the continued expansion of bluefin tuna aquaculture globally, the increasing demand for high-quality bluefin tuna, and the uncertainty regarding the economic feasibility of an offshore bluefin tuna aquaculture industry in the United States. These organs included the gills, mantle, foot, reproductive organs, adductor muscle, and viscera. After ashing and dissolving with nitric acid (8 M), each tissue was analyzed for ⁶⁵Zn by gamma-ray spectrometry. The determination of total zinc concentrations of the various organs was accomplished by atomic absorption spectrophotometry as well as by neutron activation analysis. Variable amounts of both stable zinc and radioactive ⁶⁵Zn were observed within the specific tissues from a given location. The ⁶⁵Zn specific activities of the tissues of organisms from a particular station however, tended to be uniform, at least within the uncertainty of the measurements. Both radiozinc and ⁶⁵Zn specific activity decreased with distance from the Columbia River mouth, whereas the stable zinc tended to remain uniform for a specific tissue. Tissues high in radiozinc were also high in stable zinc and conversely. An estimate of the input specific activity from the mussel' environment (food and/or water) was calculated from a simple model resulting in a value similar to zooplankton values sampled from within the Columbia River plume. Comparison of the concentrations of zinc determined by neutron activation with those determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry indicated a linear relationship between the two methods. Results of atomic absorption measurements were approximately 27% larger than the results of neutron activation analysis, indicating the presence of a systematic error. The higher values attained by atomic absorption are attributed to evaporation during storage of the ash solution which would lead to an increase in zinc concentration. In considering the two methods of analysis, economy of both time and expenses favors the atomic absorption method over that of neutron activation. This study develops an integrated theoretical perspective that combines feminist theory and social exchange theory to examine levels of domestic conflict. A regression model was constructed to test the hypothesis that identification with fundamentalist Protestant religious and moral beliefs and the economic dependence of women were factors contributing to high levels of violent conflict within marital dyads. The study analyzed data gathered from a probability sample of 3421 married couples. The dependent variable, marital conflict, was operationalized using a modified version of the Conflict Tactics Scale (Straus, 1979). This variable was regressed on the independent variables: Protestant fundamentalist religiosity, religious affiliation, Protestant moral/family values, wives' economic dependency and the economic, social and demographic variables cited in the literature for their relationship to dyadic violence. The study found that identification with a fundamentalist Protestant religious discourse was not significantly related to increased levels of dyadic violence. Agreement with the basic moral/family values of the fundamentalist Protestant discourse were significantly related to lower levels of conflict. Women's economic dependency was also significantly related to lower levels of conflict. These data support the conclusion that women who identify with conservative values and acquiesce to the male power structure by choosing a more traditional life-course of economic dependency are less likely to be involved in high conflict or violent marriages. The additive nonparametric regression proposed by Hastie and Tibshirani (1990) is applied to capture a series of nonlinearities relating prices to their attributes that cannot be captured by conventional parametric approach. Due to its additive structure, the additive nonparametric regression retains an important interpretative feature of the linear model and avoids the drawbacks of a fully nonparametric design such as slow rates of convergence and the "curse of dimensionality." The "benchmark" parametric specification for the hedonic price function is carefully chosen via the estimation of the Box and Cox (1964) and Wooldridge (1992) transformations. The additive nonparametric model provides smaller price prediction errors than the benchmark parametric specification in standard goodness of fit measures. The first study examines the effects on housing prices of the structural and environmental attributes using residential sales data from Portland, Oregon. The overall estimation results verify that most housing attributes that are generally linked to the perception of quality, such as larger total structure square footage and higher elevation, have significant positive implicit prices. Attributes that reduce house quality, such as age of house and distance to environmental amenities, discount the value of a house. Complex price effects of various housing attributes are revealed by the additive nonparametric regression. The second study uses a hedonic price approach to estimate the effects on used car prices of vehicle emission attributes, such as hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions, using data from the Vehicle Inspection Program in Portland, Oregon. The estimation results show that used car value is on average higher for vehicles with lower hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions, ceteris paribus. This empirical finding is consistent with recent reports from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which indicate that used vehicles failing to pass required emission tests face potentially high repair costs and frequent smog-check requirements. More cylinders and larger engine size are highly valued. Higher mileage receives relatively little discount compared to age of vehicle. To provide further information on the occurrence and geographical variations of bioluminescent capabilities of marine dinoflagellates, forty species, representing twelve genera, of dinoflagellates from Yaquina Bay, Oregon, were examined for bioluminescence as single cell isolates. Seventeen species from the genera Ceratium (1 sp.), Gonyaulax (3 sp.), and Peridinium (13 sp.) were found to be bioluminescent. Ceratium fusus was the only member of the genus found to emit light; G. triacantha was found to be non-bioluminescent. The total photon emission of each luminescent species is reported. Values ranged from 1.05 x 10¹⁰ photons per P. depressum to 2.1 x 1O⁷ photons per G. digitale. As a taxon, the genus Peridinium emitted more light by an order of magnitude than did Ceratium or Gonyaulax. Comparisons with previous reports are made. Photoinhibition of the mechanical receptor mechanism is largely responsible for orders of magnitude diel variations of stimulable bioluminescence in the auxotrophic dinoflagellates. The mechanically stimulable bioluminescence of members of the Gonyaulax catenella group can be photoinhibited completely by exposure to as little as 10¹³ quanta/cm² delivered as a pulse of width between 0.1 and 10 seconds. There is an initial time lag of one minute, followed by a first order decay to approximately one percent of the bioluminescence of unexposed controls. The half time of this decay is only 50 seconds. Action spectra for photoinhibition in Gonyaulax catenella, G. acatenlla, and G. tamarensis revealed a single absorption band with a maximum at 562 nm. Photoinhibition appears to raise the threshold of sensitivity of the shear receptor mechanism. Chemically stimulable bioluminescence is unaffected by these brief exposures to light. Grazing experiments were conducted with three calanoid copepods and three species of bioluminescent dinoflagellates, using procedures which yielded samples of cultures with high and low capacities for mechanically stimulable bioluminescence. In all cases the ingestion rates were lower for the high bioluminescent capacity samples than for the samples having a reduced bioluminescent capacity. These results indicate that dinoflagellate bioluminescence has survival value as a defense against copepod grazing. Of several possible mechanisms, we propose that the flash is a visual, protean display which startles or confuses the copepod sufficiently to allow the dinoflagellate to escape. Although pore water δ13CDIC is extremely low (–6 to –48%), the δ13C values of living (Rose Bengal stained) foraminifera shells collected from active methane seeps are not significantly lower than those observed in nonventing pelagic sediments, and are within the range expected from local organic matter decomposition (0 to –4%). The apparent δ13C disequilibrium between biogenic calcite and DIC suggests that at seep localities, foraminifera calcify mostly during periods when there is little methane discharge or during intermittent episodes of seawater flow into the sediments. The isotopic composition and Mg/Ca ratios of fossil (unstained) foraminifera recovered at carbonate-rich sites on the northern Hydrate Ridge reveals overprinting of the biogenic record by inorganic calcite with high Mg/Ca and anomalously low d13C values. Thus overprinting of the original isotopic composition of foraminifera by overgrowths or recrystallization at or below the sediment surface, rather than primary calcification in contact with 13C depleted DIC, can explain extreme 13C depletion observed in fossil foraminifera recovered from sites of active methane discharge. Includes only records of deer and elk, with reported precision of >= 0.5 mile. Hot spots were derived from a kernel density probability analysis, and mapped using the Jenks Natural Breaks method to rank the values into five continuous categories. Model parameters include 100x100 grid cells and a 5280 foot search radius.
