In the foreground on the left side of the photo are log pilings and what looks like a water wheel or some sort of scaffolding on the side of a building. On the river and partly obscured by the pilings is a man in a rowboat. He seems to be regarding the cigar-shaped ocean-going log raft being pulled by a tugboat. There are chains holding the log raft together, running across the logs every few feet. White smoke or steam streams from the tug's smokestack. Another tug is approaching. To the right of the tugs is a log cradle where the rafts are formed. On the beach are what look like log buildings, with red roofs. At the far end of the buildings tall light-colored pilings are standing. Behind them and all along the shore is a lush forest. He wears a hat with a rounded crown and wide brim, a light shirt and jacket, sturdy pants and shoes. A painter on his right leads from the bow to the left edge of the photo. He holds a slim pole longer than he is tall. At the right of the rowboat in the water is a dark rock, and the oars are laid so the handles are in the boat and the flat ends rest on top of the rock. Lying in the water at the man's feet is a sturgeon. The fish is almost half as long as the boat. In the background stretches the river, with forested hills above the banks. In the foreground of the photo is a bridge with a small brook running under it. A group of people are lounging on it near two parked convertible automobiles. Some of the men wear caps, and one wears a straw boater. One man is leaning over the bridge facing the camera, consulting a map or guide which hangs down over the parapet on which two other men are sitting. The spoked tires of the cars can be seen through the arches. Beyond this bridge are the two cataracts of Multnomah Falls. There are more people on the stone-built Benson Bridge, which arches gracefully over the lower falls. The Selkirk was built in Wenatchee in 1899 and was owned by the Columbia & Okanogan Steamboat Co. She was wrecked at Rock Island Rapids in 1906. In the photograph we see her near a bend in the river. On the opposite shore is a low riverbank which quickly gives way to abruptly steep mountains, sparsely treed with conifers. Billowing clouds of smoke emerge from the ship's smokestack, but the reflection in the water and what looks like a line from ship to water on the right of the photo suggests that she is moored, or at least moving slowly.Several male figures are visible on upper and lower decks. It looks as though there is a cabin on the far bank.
