An early alumnus claimed that the Trysting Tree was named because of its "magical effects on students, especially in the spring time." The tree's popularity was such that the Board of Regents felt obliged to place two arc lights on the cupola of Benton Hall (then Administration Building) "to keep the tree from being overworked." On September 27, 1987, the Trysting Tree was cut down because of advanced disease in its trunk and limbs. This particular photo was taken with a Kodak No. 2 camera, one of the earliest cameras developed for amateur photographers. They are riding through a meadow edged by a line of trees where people stand watching. There are five tipis spaced along the tree line on the meadow. On the opposite side of the photo is a photographer dressed in European-American clothing and a camera. Some of the people watching are wearing cowboy hats and are wrapped in blankets. I conducted 20 formal and informal interviews with undocumented Latino/a immigrants living in Eugene and Springfield in order to find out how these immigrants maneuver the system in order to acquire housing, work, social resources, and other things that they need to survive. These interviews ultimately revealed that immigrants use social capital to circumvent these barriers and that the largest barriers that they face to survival and integration all ultimately revolve around a lack of access to a government issued photo ID/driver's license and language barriers. After conducting these interviews and researching how other jurisdictions have worked to integrate immigrants, I offer specific local planning and public policy recommendations for how to collaboratively integrate undocumented Latino/a immigrants into our community. This study asks the question: how effective is the organization's Organic Gardening program at improving the mental, physical, and nutritional health of urban Latinos? I analyze how participation in the community gardening program empowers the families involved and provides them access to fresh and culturally appropriate foods. It consisted of the president, the academic deans, director of Extension and other top college administrators such as the registrar and deans of men and women. This may have been the last meeting of the Administrative Council prior to President Peavy’s retirement. Images were scanned with a Hewlett Packard ScanJet Plus at 144 dpi. Digitized images were manipulated and retouched using Adobe Photoshop 1.0.7. Text was set in N Helvetica Narrow using Microsoft Word 4.0. The page layout program of choice was QuarkXPress 3.0. Images were screened at 133 lpi. All computer work was done at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design's outputs at 1200 dpi were made by the Electronic Easel. Printing on 70# gloss text was done at Bruce Printing.
