Secondary observations of needle length, needle weight, and needle number were also obtained. A formula derived through step-wise multiple regression of the secondary observations on the rate of photosynthesis controlled 87 of the variation. The significance of the regression formula indicated the importance of the process of mutual shading. Analysis of variance of the un-adjusted rates of photosynthesis was significant between and within seed sources. After adjustment only seed source differences were significant. Analysis of variance of the regression formula was significant between and within seed sources. By the process of contrasting sums of squares, climatic factors at the origin of the seed sources were found significantly to effect only the morphological factors. Therefore adaptation of the photosynthetic process by morphology to an environment is probable. The importance of this study is that the processes used to determine the adjusted rate of photosynthesis enable a better estimate of the apparent net photosynthesis than has been possible before with Douglas-fir. Rehd.), an evergreen hardwood tree that grows abundantly in southwest Oregon and north California, sprouts vigorously after a disturbance, such as logging or fire These sprouts form clumps that can hamper conifer regeneration on clearcuts and in shelterwoods. In order to obtain a quantitative measure of the site occupancy by tanoak sprout clumps, aboveground biomass and leaf area were estimated for a range of sprout clump sizes of age 1 to 6. Both variables were linearly correlated with the diameter of the original parent tree at breast height (dbh). Equations were developed for predicting sprout clutnpbiomass, leaf area, and crown area through age 6 from the dbh of the original parent tree. Thus, by knowing the diameters of tanoak trees prior to cutting, the bioinass, leaf area, and crown area of the developing sprout clump stand can be predicted up to 6 years after cutting. Biomass and leaf area were also linearly correlated with crown area. This permits the estimation of tanoak site occupancy (i.e., biomass/ha, leaf area index, and percent crown cover) in existing brushfields, based on measurements of clump size derived from aerial photos or ground surveys. The purpose of this study was to determine if infection levels of dwarf mistletoe on ponderosa pine could be detected with color aerial photography. The photography was taken in early September using Kodak Ektachrome Infrared Aero and Ektachrome Aero films at scales of 1/4000, 1/2000, and 1/1000. Ground truth consisted of 214 trees classified as to healthy, lightly infected, moderately infected or heavily infected. Three photo interpreters were able to correctly classify these trees only 34 percent of the time. Statistical analysis indicated no significant differences between interpreters, film types, scales, or levels of infection. Rearrangement of the data did indicate that four interpreters were able to distinguish mistletoed from non-mistletoed trees 70 percent of the time using Ektachrome Infrared Aero film at a 1/1000 scale. Results might be improved by using low oblique photography taken in the spring with either Kodak Ektachrome aero or Ektachrome Infrared Aero films, at a scale of 1/1000. The EM/MS experiments distinguished electronegative compounds (especially isomers) by transient negative ions (TNIs) of the same mass but differing energies and/or the formation of distinct TNIs of different masses for each electronegative compound. The ECCI/MS results of polybrominated benzenes show that "bromine addition" and hydrogen abstraction reactions occur to form ions with one to three bromines added to the starting material. Computations have given insight into the mechanisms that may be involved in the EM/MS and ECCI/MS experiments. Calculations have also provided qualitative support for the processes that may be occurring in the ECCI/MS experiments, and in non-photochemical and photochemical reactions of polyhalogenated benzenes. Photochemical experiments reveal that a minor, but notable pathway that involves an "iso-polychlorobenzene intermediate", is taking part in the photo-dehalogenation of chlorobenzene and hexachlorobenzene. Such systems are characterized by 1) the communication involves a local, usually circular area; 2) Obstacles are allowed between a transmitter and the receivers. This is in contrast to the point-to-point and line-of-sight communications performed by almost all existing infrared data communication or transmission systems. The elimination of the point-to-point limitation makes ONP systems suitable for optical local area networking. The feasibility of ONP systems employing infrared LEDs and silicon photo detectors has been analyzed and the performance of such systems predicted. The analysis shows that indoor ONP systems are both feasible and practical. Only a few LEDs are required to cover the entire area of a large room. Efforts have been made in finding rules for optimal design of the ONP systems. A set of design criteria and curves have been established. The theoretical analysis has been verified in a successful experiment done with OptoNet, an ONP infrared datalink for local area networks. This experimental system consists of two identical communication units employing FSK modulation and microprocessor controllers. The experiment has demonstrated that the ONP optical data communications can be realized by relatively simple electronic hardware. Methods – A survey was emailed to a random sample of 1,000 freshmen enrolled at Oregon State University in the fall of 2009. A total of 63 surveys were returned. Results – The majority of students indicated they would use Google to find a picture. Nineteen respondents said they would use a library, librarians, and/or archives. Conclusions – The results indicate the majority of students in our study would use Google to find an image for coursework purposes; yet the students who suggested they would use Google did not mention evaluating the images they might find or have concerns about copyright issues. Undergraduate students would benefit from having visual literacy integrated into standard information literacy instruction to help them locate, evaluate, and legally use the images they find online. In addition, libraries, librarians, archivists, and library computer programmers should work to raise the rankings of library digital photo collections in online search engines like Google.
