Measurements were made of real-time photoresponse of polycrystalline thin films of these materials to ultrafast laser pulses, on picosecond to microsecond time-scales, as well as measurements of dark current and current under steady illumination. This data was taken over varied field-strength, light intensity and temperature. The results support a model for carrier generation and transport with the following features. Carrier photo-generation is assisted weakly, if it is assisted at all, thermally or by applied fields. Carriers are initially (picosecond to nanosecond time-scales) in extended states and transport is "bandlike." Carriers then relax into more localized states, transported via thermally assisted hopping (nanosecond to second time-scales). This model was supported by further experiments with the electric behavior of films prepared from a pure anthradithophene derivative, doped with either the buckminsterfullerene C₆₀ or with other molecular dopants. These results also show that samples with traps of known density and depth can be prepared, as a means of manipulating transport dynamics. The electronic and photo-electronic behaviors of films with self-anodized aluminum and of films with gold electrodes were compared, and a model of the particular energy profile and dynamics which exist at the different interfaces between the films and the different contacts was developed. This model views the metal-organic-metal system as an anode-to-anode Schottky strucure, whose I-V relation is shaped both by the nature of the interface dynamics for different metal contacts, and by the different distributions of space-charge in the thin film between different electrodes. This thesis investigates two methods of optical excitation of alternating-current thin-film electroluminescent (ACTFEL) devices. The two experimental methods investigated in this thesis are the photo-induced charge (PIQ) and luminescence (PIL), and the subthreshold-voltage induced transferred charge (VIQ) techniques. PIQ/PIL experiments utilize an above-bandgap laser pulse to investigate the transport properties of photo-injected electrons and holes within the phosphor layer of the ACTFEL device. VIQ experiments use a broadband xenon lamp pulse to optically reset traps which are ionized by subthreshold bipolar voltage pulses. Both experiments characterize traps within the phosphor layer. PIQ/PIL experiments are performed on evaporated ZnS:Mn ACTFEL devices possessing phosphor layers with thicknesses of 950, 700, and 300 nm. From the PIQ/PIL experiment, an impact excitation threshold electric field for evaporated ZnS:Mn is found to be ~1 MV/cm. Evidence of hole-trapping is also obtained from the PIQ experiment. The holes in evaporated ZnS:Mn ACTFEL devices are found to possess a drift length of ~180 ± 70 nm, a hole lifetime of ~2 ps, and a capture cross-section of ~7 x 10⁻¹³ cm². It is speculated that the trap responsible for hole capture is a zinc vacancy or zinc vacancy complex. VIQ experiments are performed on evaporated, atomic layer epitaxy [ALE] (Cl), and ALE (DEZ) ZnS:Mn ACTFEL devices. Data obtained via VIQ experiments yield evidence for the generation of space charge below the EL conduction threshold, as well as providing a means of estimating the physical location, energy depth, density, and capture cross-section of traps responsible for VIQ. Both techniques provide information related to traps within the phosphor layer. PIQ/PIL experiments monitor the transport of electrons and holes across the phosphor layer which are photo-injected by a UV laser pulse. VIQ experiments monitor the optical reset of traps ionized by bipolar subthreshold voltage pulses. The ~0.8 MV/cm weak threshold is attributed to field emission of relatively shallow (~0.6 eV) electron-emitting bulk traps (e.g. cerium or oxygen for SrS:Ce; a sulfur vacancy or oxygen for SrS:Cu). The ~1.2 MV/cm strong threshold is ascribed to the onset of trap-to-band impact ionization. In contrast to electron transport, PIQ/PIL studies reveal no hole transport in SrS doped with luminescent impurities, although hole transport is observed for an undoped SrS ACTFEL device. The lack of hole transport is attributed to the efficiency of hole capture in SrS doped with luminescent impurities. VIQ experiments are performed on the same SrS ACTFEL devices. VIQ trap energy depths are estimated as ~0.1 eV for SrS:Ce; ~0.9 eV for SrS:Cu (with a capture cross-section of ,~10⁻¹³cm²), and ~0.6 eV for undoped SrS. The project of which this research was a part is designed to provide an improved system of ecological resource analysis. Specific objectives of this study were: (1) classification of plant communities on the fringes of the sagebrush steppes and the salt desert of southeastern Oregon, (2) development of symbolic and descriptive legends for the classification units, and (3) preparation of a dichotomous key to the legend. Major landform stratification was done on an aerial photo mosaic to aid the selection of sampling areas. Sampling was done by ocular survey of entire stands with the aid of pretyped aerial photography. Society tables were used for a phytosociological synthesis of the data. Fifty-six important plant communities were identified and characterized. The synthesized data were used in preparation of a descriptive legend and the dichotomous key. This narrative legend includes a brief description of each community and a summary of its associated environmental characteristics. A symbolic legend was devised to identify each of these communities. The legend identifiers consist of a hierarchically arranged, three-digit, non-connotative symbol. A field test was made indicating that the legend and key could be accurately used in the project area. In the test, 97 percent of the keyed determinations and legend units fit the newly examined stands with negligible difference between two observers. The legend and key are designed for use with aerial photo interpretation to provide a resource analysis of increased accuracy at reasonable cost. Suggestions for expansion and adaptation of the legend to other areas are presented. We determined the correlation between green leaf area size (LA) and forage yield (Y) and compared plant utilization estimated by photographic technique (ULA) to actual utilization (UY) values. Shrub forage yield and utilization were determined by hand plucking in five to eight increments. Before the first plucking, and after each subsequent plucking, we took two photos that were perpendicular to each other at the intersection of the shrub. Each photo was evaluated using image-processing software to produce red (R), green (G), and blue (B) color band images. Green leaf area was determined as follows: pixel = ([G-R] + [G-B])/ (G+R+G+B); Green leaf area, cm2 = (Calibration [C], cm2∙pixel-1) × (LA, pixel). Green leaf area calculated from the photographic technique was strongly correlated (r2 = 0.83-0.94, P < 0.001) with forage yield for all three shrubs. A strong correlation (r2 = 0.95, n = 142) was detected between utilization values estimated through green leaf area size and actual values. Utilization estimated by LA did not differ (P = 0.60, n = 142) from actual utilization values. In summary, our results indicate the photographic technique could be used once calibration curves are developed, to measure available browse yield and utilization of shrubs in a nondestructive approach. HS and BS held simultaneously is defined as ambivalent sexism (AS). Despite negative outcomes associated with AS, BS, and HS, women on average report endorsing AS, BS, and HS. Our study examined the extent to which viewing and describing pictures of female celebrities in stereotypically feminine and counter-stereotypical forms influences young adult women’s endorsement of AS, BS, and HS. It was predicted that highly-feminine images would increase participants’ AS, BS, and HS while unfeminine images would decrease participants’ AS, BS, and HS. Participants were randomly assigned to view and describe a series of highly-feminine, unfeminine, or control (natural scenery) photos and complete pretest and posttest Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI) measurements. Results indicated that women’s endorsement of AS, BS, and HS did not change significantly between any of the photo conditions, suggesting viewing and describing images of female celebrities did not impact women’s endorsement of AS, BS, or HS. However, we were able to identify psychological entitlement and enjoyment of sexualization as positively related constructs, and feminist identity as a negatively related construct to women’s endorsement of AS, BS, and HS. The importance and implications of identifying risk and protective factors on women’s endorsement of AS, BS, and HS are discussed. One population of women that has utilized social media in this way is the plus-sized fashion ("fatshion") community on the popular multimedia blogging site Tumblr. Through posting personal photos of 'outfits of the day' (OOTDs), participants use Tumblr to address the lack of size representation in the fashion industry as well as to share resources for finding fashionable, plus-sized clothing. This project examines how contributors to fatshion blogs negotiate identities as well as how participation in these blogs both supports and defies a neoliberal economic system that casts participating in fashion as a right, without considering how it contributes to oppression of other groups of women. The project discusses blogs as spaces for combatting the effects of sizeism, for negotiating racist images of women of color in the media, and, to a certain extent, for situating fatness within hegemonic femininity, and it also investigates the extent to which these blogs register or ignore the oppressive effects of the fashion industry in the global South. Some bloggers express an interest in repurposing and thrifting clothing, but their motivations are less explicit. The blogs provide clear answers to some of these questions and initiate only more questions about others, but regardless, the photos and commentary submitted to the blogs provide ample material for discussion.
