The information was gathered from interviews, annual reports, archival sources, and scholarly research. Chapter One examines the scholarly conversation about writing centers, drawing on several major contributors to identify a number of themes that recur in research on writing centers and their history Chapter One also describes the cultural historiographic approach employed in this thesis. Chapter Two offers an overview of writing center theory and practice, in order to provide a helpful context for Chapters Three and Four. Chapter Three explores the early history and pre-history of the OSU Writing Center and examines it in the context of the Center for Writing and Learning and of OSU. Chapter Four looks at the Writing Center itself, discussing the coordinators who have worked there and their contributions, the writing assistants and their training, the students, and the director's role in the Center. Chapter Five concludes this thesis by reexamining the writing center themes identified in Chapter One in light of what has been learned about the OSU Writing Center. Objective--Identify patient history intake questions common to four fields of medicine - allopathic, naturopathic, chiropractic and Traditional Chinese Medicine to be included in an Integrated Patient History Intake Tool. Background--The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is on the rise in the United States. 80% of those who used CAM therapies in 1990 did so in conjunction with allopathic medicine, and 70% of those who used CAM therapies did not tell their conventional practitioner. Lack of awareness of patients' use of CAM therapies may hinder practitioners' ability to provide adequate healthcare. Methods--A three-round modified Delphi technique was utilized to generate consensus among 106 Oregon health care practitioners on the importance of specific patient history intake questions. A panel of faculty members from Oregon Health and Sciences University, the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, and Western States Chiropractic College identified 321 patient history intake questions, which then were distributed to the Oregon healthcare practitioners. The healthcare practitioners were asked to rate the importance of each question through a series of two surveys over the period of eleven weeks. Suggestions for additional intake questions also were invited. Results--The Delphi process narrowed the 321 initial questions plus 150 additional suggested questions down to a list of 52 intake questions to be included in the Integrated Patient History Intake Tool. There was an overall response rate of 47% with a 64% response rate to SURVEY I, and a 74% response rate for SURVEY II. Discussion--The patient history intake questions have been identified for use in an Integrated Patient History Intake tool. This Delphi study illustrated the differences that are held unique for each paradigm of medicine. Determining unique characteristics of complementary and alternative medicine from allopathic medicine is an important aspect of building collaboration among allopathic and CAM providers within the state of Oregon. The proposed model of an integrated patient history intake form provides a platform from which to build further cooperation and awareness.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: An Assessment of the “Sweating Sickness” Affecting England During the Tudor Dynasty Author: Wollert, Edwin Del While historiography and interest in Tudor England at both the popular and specialist levels presents few signs of diminishing, there may nonetheless exist a sense that we have little left to learn about this period and its culture. A notable gap in our knowledge, however, remains regarding the mysterious disease known only as “sweating sickness” or sudor anglicus. This dissertation addresses and evaluates this disease from the perspective of the history of science, and in doing so, it makes three key arguments. First, this project examines how the early modern science and medicine known and practiced by Tudor subjects influenced their perceptions of this new disease, leaving them in a mostly helpless position from which to combat it and indeed often wondering if the unknown illness might represent a divine judgment, especially in the form of questioning a dubious claim to monarchy made by the first Tudor ruler, Henry VII. Second, the dissertation offers a detailed and layered thesis concluding that the disease was ultimately caused by an earlier version of the louping-ill virus, or LIV, a virus and accompanying illness which continued to affect parts of Western Europe, with its own unique strain still extant within Britain. The third argument will return to the opening statement of this abstract, and reveal how this more thorough and unique treatment of Tudor historiography does much to further our understanding of the Tudors and their citizens, all the more relevant since the “Sweat” even now is typically either mentioned in passing, or not at all, but those who write about this period of history. Traditional approaches to research and management of striped bass have tended to be mechanistic, numerically oriented, and based on limited life history information. In the study presented here, comprehensive conceptual perspective was used in a multivariate study of life history and evolutionary adaptation of 10 striped bass populations representing the full geographic and ecologic diversity of striped bass. The colonization trajectory of populations originating from a small colonizing population from the Hudson River demonstrated how striped bass adapted in varying degrees of success in their reproduction, development, behavior, survival, and trophics to a range of western North American habitats. Habitats that were marginal through infrequent suitability for successful reproduction or survival of early life stages, or through limiting longevity, resulted in life history tactics that consisted of tradeoffs between life history traits, especially reproduction and development. Fishery management effects (exploitation and stocking) and habitat effects (water temperatures, freshwater inflows, forage and pollutants) influenced life history and evolutionary adaptive capacities of all populations. Highly variable and indeterminate environments also affected these capacities and related to year-class dominance. This helped to explain declines in five of the study's populations.
