This study evaluated the memory and visual discrimination capabilities of Enteroctopus dofleini, the Giant Pacific Octopus. Octopuses have been known to have advance sensory capabilities and through this study we challenged our specimen to remember and actively choose a specific patterned jar based on a visual pattern and positive reinforcement. The results of this study could be used to compare the learning capabilities and visual discrimination skills of this species of octopus to other cephalopods that have been previously studied. Daily trials were conducted using differently patterned jars with one containing food to act as positive reinforcement for the octopus opening a specific patterned jar. The jars were floated in the tank in random order and the time was recorded for how long it took the octopus to make a definite grab onto a specific jar. After obtaining all our data, we ran a T-test as well as ANOVA statistical tests with a Tukey comparison in Minitab to determine if our results were significant. The data collected in this study did not support the original hypothesis that octopuses are capable of visual discrimination and memory, but it did support the assertion that they are able to learn new tasks. To our knowledge the specimen we worked with had never opened a screw top lid on a jar and by the end of this experiment it was able to do it quickly and efficiently. Caution is advised when using these results until further testing can be completed and more data collected. Given the small amount of data collected, additional trials and testing would benefit this study greatly as well as using more consistent testing methods to eliminate human error. The groundfish processing industry has suffered a steep, almost continual decline in landings starting in 1984 that resulted in 2014 landings that were only 16% of 1983 landings. US scallop landings increased from 5 million mt in 1998 to 30 mill mt in 2004, remaining around that peak until 2012. Both processing industries had to adjust: groundfish processors had to find new sources of fresh groundfish and other products to fill customers’ orders and scallop processors had to find new customers to buy its surplus product. This study used interviews with processors and data on landings, imports and exports to examine the marketing strategies of these processing industries to adjust to trends in landings and to evaluate their success within the confines the US Magnuson-Stevens Act. After imported whole groundfish from Canada were eliminated as substitutes for local landings, groundfish processors increased diversification of products as substitute for fresh groundfish to fill their customers’ orders, scouring the world for products such as Pacific cod, other groundfish, and some pelagic species. They also skipped the wholesale market to sell direct to retailers and restaurants. Not all succeeded, processing plants declined by almost half since 1990. Scallop processors successfully developed new markets for scallops, through exports and IQF packing for restaurants. The doubling of ex-vessel scallop prices, adjusted for inflation, since 2000 shows their success, which also supports processors’ claims that steady increasing supply improves product sales. Additionally, this report succeeds a recent draft of the new Oregon Nearshore Strategy (by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (ODFW) Marine Resources Program (2005)) that recommends ODFW provide greater attention to developing and achieving stock assessments for shellfish as well as develop more capable fisheries management methods – two important aspects of this bay clam fishery study. This report provides a synthesis of political, social, and scientific information regarding the current status and future potential of the Oregon bay clam commercial fishery and addresses the following topics: regulation and management, allocation, ecology and biology, estuarine water quality, stock assessments, economics, funding, applied Geographic Information Science (GIS), examples of relevant management from other states and countries, and related issues including markets, aquaculture, non-indigenous species, and regulatory enforcement. The presentation of these issues provides a framework for developing and implementing a bay clam fishery management plan. Cost-effective and cooperative management act as guiding concepts in developing the report’s structure, analysis, and recommendations. The processing subsystem of the fishery is hampered by a variety of problems that have acted to impede technological innovations that could improve efficiency and sanitation in seafood plants. This paper provides background for problems encountered by the processors, discusses the existing plant operations, and points out problems inherent with the existing system. System. I presents solutions to identified problems, the principle ones being a crab butchering machine to replace the manual-operation; improved work design method for shucking crab meat; and a multi-purpose shaker table to combine the freshening, inspection, de-watering and can-filling operations. If all equipment and procedure changes recommended in System I are implemented, an estimated capital investment of $18, 350 will yield an annual savings of $13, 600. System II presents new concepts in crab processing. This system incorporates, a centrifuge to separate meat from the shell, a forming machine to make meat more consumer acceptable, cryogenic freezing to improve quality and improved packaging to increase sales. Finally, the following nine specific areas are identified for future studies: 1) cooking 4) crabmeat centrifuge 7) cryogenic freezing 2) cooling 5) formed body meat 8) packaging 3) shucking 6) crabmeat water content 9) Tanner crab Most of the above topics relate to the further design and refinement of System II, but probably the most important area for development lies in the Tanner crab fishery. Females were either exposed to male courtship and inseminated or were isolated from male contact. Follicular maturation was accelerated after only 10 hours of amplexus. Further, as determined by the presence of oviducal eggs, only mated females ovulated, and this occurred 11 to 32 days after exposure of the female to male courtship and insemination. To determine whether male mating behaviors or insemination causes ovulation, cloacae were occluded in half of the females that were paired with nuptial males. Neither females that were exposed to male courtship but were not inseminated, nor unmated controls ovulated. In contrast, a high percentage of inseminated females both ovulated and oviposited. Progesterone is known to play an integral role in the stimulation of meiotic maturation and ovulation in amphibians. Unmated females injected with exogenous gonadotropin, ovine LH, were sacrificed at various intervals following injections, and plasma progesterone concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay. LH induced ovulation. Further, ovulation, induced by injections of exogenous LH, was associated with an increase in plasma progesterone levels: Progesterone concentration was highest one day prior to the onset of ovulation. Plasma progesterone levels were measured in females sacrificed at various intervals during and following mating, and also in unmated control females. There was no significant difference in plasma progesterone concentrations in mated and unmated females during the first 4 days following initiation of mating behaviors. A significant difference between mated and unmated females was found 13 days after pairing. These results support the hypothesis that male mating behaviors stimulate the release of gonadotropin which acts on the ovary to facilitate the production of a steroid, probably progesterone, capable of inducing maturation and ovulation. Furthermore, male courtship with insemination induces ovulation in T. granulosa. This is the first documentation of induced ovulation in any species of amphibians.
