The run to the Willamette is most unique in that the migrating fish pass up the river through Portland, a city of several hundred thousand people, and support a large sport fishery in the metropolitan area. This river is the major tributary of the Columbia west of the Cascade Mountains and joins that river about 100 miles from the sea. Anadromous forms, other than spring chinook frequenting the Willamette, include fall chinook and silver salmon, steelhead, trout, and shad. Spring chinook populations of the Columbia have declined steadily since about 1890 and those of the Willamette have probably done likewise. An investigation is being conducted to assess the causes of the decline in Willamette spring chinook. A study of the spot fishery is part of the program." The spawning and rearing areas are comparatively free of undesirable fish species, but salmonid smolts migrating downstream must travel through populations of large predatory squawfish. The purpose of the study was to determine if salmonid smolt survival could be increased through removal of the large squawfish by treatment with rotenone. A 40-mile section of the John Day River between Dayville and John Day was selected for study. A pretreatment fish population inventory was conducted to determine the species and numbers of fish present within the test area. Significantly large populations of undesirable fish and correspondingly low numbers of salmonids were observed in the test area...Posttreatment inventory of fish populations within the study area has shown that average size and number of squawfish was effectively reduced and that salmonid numbers can be increased by temporary control of rough fish populations." It is also recognized that the passivation of the silicon surface by the vitreous silicon dioxide envelope protects the underlying surface from damage during the diffusion process. Thus indirectly it helps in improving the device parameters, like current amplification factor, the reverse current and the breakdown voltage. In spite of its very wide application in device design the physics of the effect is hardly understood. Very little work has been done in this field. The mechanism of the chemical reduction of the impurity oxide in the silicon dioxide layer and its distribution therein should have a strong influence on the concentration of the impurity in silicon. The present endeavor was concerned with finding the distribution of antimony, one of the donor elements, in the oxide layer. The experimental evidence indicates that the migration of antimony through silicon dioxide is a diffusion controlled reaction and that its concentration profile can be broken up into two regions. The diffusion follows an approximate erfc distribution in the first region with diffusion constant = 7.40 x 10⁻¹⁵ cm²/sec. The second region, however, shows a saturation behavior.
