Mass transfer data were collected for the column using 6 and 12 baffles and employing a partial gas phase recycle. Data were also collected from a countercurrent column having the same volume of packing as the crosscurrent column. The mass transfer efficiency for the column was determined using a variety of liquid to gas flowrate ratios and covering a range of liquid flowrates. Efficiencies were highest for flowrates above the transition point to crosscurrent flow. Efficiencies increased with decreasing liquid to gas ratios. Efficiences were higher with the larger number of baffles. Higher oxygen concentrations in the gas phase were created while using a gas phase recycle. The increased oxygen concentrations resulted in increased mass transfer efficiencies and increased oxygen utilization. The location of the transition point was correlated as a function of liquid flowrate and liquid to gas ratio. An earlier study, performed on the same column but using a different gas-liquid system and different ranges of flowrates, presented similar data. Comparison of the data from this study and the previous one shows that more information must be collected to determine which factors significantly influence the location of the transition point. The mass transfer efficiency for the countercurrent column was greater than for the crosscurrent column when similar flowrates were tested. However the flow-through capacity of the crosscurrent column was much greater than the flow-through capacity possible with the coutercurrent column. At flowrates above the flooding point for the countercurrent column the crosscurrent column achieved efficiencies which were comparable to the maximum efficiencies for the countercurrent column. Overall capacity coefficients were calculated and correlated as a function of liquid flowrate and liquid to gas ratio. Based on these results and the favorable pressure drop behavior demonstrated by other investigators the multi-stage crosscurrent column is an attractive alternative to the conventional towers used for the absorption of oxygen into water. This research implicitly used topography, soil, and climate data to estimate plausible continuous hydraulic conductivity values at a basin-wide scale. The study demonstrated that continuous estimates of aquifer hydraulic conductivity using a geographic information system (GIS) approach are plausible. Manuscript 1 investigated the effects of different GIS stream generation methods on continuous estimates of conductivity and independent sources were used to verify the plausibility of the results ranging from well pumping tests to Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO). Because of the disparity between the scales at which measurements are taken for traditional conductivity estimates and those required for hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, conductivity point data are typically upscaled to the meter-to-kilometer scale and then referred to as equivalent conductivities. The Cretaceous strata are overlain by over 2,000 feet of Early Tertiary nonmarine sedimentary rocks and volcanics. Landslide deposits cover over one-half of the area. The Late Cretaceous Blackhawk Formation, the oldest formation exposed, was deposited in fluvial, swamp, coastal lagoon, and possibly shallow marine environments during the eastward retreat of the Mancos sea. This formation is overlain disconformably by the Late Cretaceous Price River Formation which is composed largely of quartz arenites derived from Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks exposed to the west. The sediments were carried into the area by streams and were deposited under piedmont and flood plain conditions. The Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary North Horn formation conformably overlies the Price River Formation. The lower part is composed largely of fluvial sandstones but, in the upper part, lacustrine mudstones and siltstones predominate. The latter were deposited in the Uinta Lake which persisted until late middle Eocene. In this lake the Early Tertiary Flagstaff, Colton and Green River Formations were deposited in succession. After an interval of erosion, the Eocene Gray Gulch Formation was deposited and, later, lavas of Oligocene age. Two periods of folding are reflected by structures within the area. The Early Laramide orogeny caused the disconformity between the Blackhawk and Price River Formations, and a later period of folding, between the late Eocene and Miocene, formed the Wasatch and Gates Creek monoclines. Late Tertiary normal faulting has been superimposed on the earlier structures. There do not appear to be favorable structures for the accumulation of oil and gas. However, stratigraphic conditions exist for both the formation and accumulation of oil and gas. The Mancos Shale, a known source rock for oil and gas farther to the east, is present in the sub-surface. Sand pinchouts in Late Cretaceous strata are believed to exist in the subsurface. Potential production in this area will depend on the presence of these updip sand pinchouts. A section of Miocene volcanic rocks totaling 5000 feet in thickness are exposed in a fault escarpment on the eastern side of Steens Nountain. These include: the Pike Creek Formation, consisting of rhyolite and dacite flows and tuffs about 1000 feet in thickness, including one rhyolite ignimbrite locally 900 feet thick; the Andesite Series (also known as Steens Mountain Volcanics), a sequence of andesite and basaltic andesite flows totaling about 1500 feet in thickness; Steens Basalt, a series of 15 million year old high-alumina olivine basalt flows totaling about 3000 feet in thickness, which crop out extensively in southeastern Oregon. Steens Basalt also crops out in the Mickey Hot Springs area, 16 miles east of Steens Mountain, where it is overlain by a thin, continuous ignimbrite and a younger basalt, here informally named Mickey basalt. The basalts of Steens Mountain were compared to those o the Mickey Rot Springs area. Correlation is established on the basis of a paleomagnetic reversal observed in the two areas, and supported by petrologic observations and chemical analysis. A large circular fault basin north of Mickey Hot Springs is suggestive of a collapsed caldera structure. The great thickness of a rhyolite ignimbrite in the Pike Creek formation may have been deposited in a rhyolite-flood eruption associated with a caldera collapse, creating a structure such as the one north of Mickey Hot Springs. People in power have misused it now there has to be a change, and a better world has to be built, and the only way it's going to be built is with extreme methods. And I, for one, will join in with anyone--don't care what color you are--as long as you want to change this miserable condition. In 2016 Naomi Klein published This Changes Everything which claimed that the only way to avoid imminent climate destruction was the end of global capitalism. What these two radical, potentially extremist, thinkers show is the connection between systemic liberal oppression and climate exploitation. These are, in essence, the two forces which the protagonists of The Sea Lion and Sailor Song are fighting against: gendered oppression by a monstrous invader and the capitalist commodification of unsettled lands. Emook and Ike, in The Sea Lion and Sailor Song, subvert the systematized logics that the colonizer manipulates for exploitation and in doing so save their communities from destruction. I connect this pattern to the natural example of riparian zones, one of the earth's 15 unique biomes. The riparian is unique in that it exists at the confluence of two diametrically opposed forces: land and water. At this juncture, it ameliorates the effects of things like flooding and pollution that could be destructive to both ecosystems. In this way and others, Emook and Ike can be seen as deploying a natural metaphor for anti-colonialization in a way that challenges how we read nature in literature.
