It is important to know how water deficits affect yields and the interaction of the deficits with the scheduling of irrigations. A field experiment was conducted during the 1981 irrigation season to investigate the effects of high and low frequency deficit irrigation on yields of winter wheat. Yield and water use data were used to construct three production functions. The relationship between the level of water use and the resulting yield were determined for three irrigation frequency regimes. Field plots under daily (high frequency), weekly (normal frequency), and stress (reduced frequency) regimes were included in the field experiment as well as two dryland production plots. The relationships derived from this project were characterized by a large degree of scatter in the results. Highly favorable weather conditions offset the effects of irrigation deficits on plant yields throughout the irrigation season. At this time, a second year of data is in the process of compilation. The results of a regression analysis showed no statistically significant difference in the water use-yield relationships of the three irrigation frequency regimes. The effect of frequency did not lead to any readily apparent differences in the three production functions. The efficiency of water use of the different irrigation frequencies increases with decreasing amount of applied water for the 1981 crop year. The most efficient treatment, i.e., least water use per unit of yield, was the pre-plant irrigated, dryfarmed plots. The density of the wheat, a measure of crop quality also increased with decreased water use in this experiment. There is a need for such information on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation (WSIR), Oregon where 65- to 80- year-old, high elevation, noble fir dominated stands are being managed. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of thinning on volume and dollar value as applied to the 65- to 80- year-old noble fir dominated stands on the WSIR. The effects of logging damage on residual stand value were studied. In addition, the effects of branch presence and size on stand value were analyzed. The West Cascades variant of the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) was used to simulate 8 thinning regimes and growth of six noble fir dominated stands from the WSIR. Stand growth was projected for 50 years. The regimes included low and proportional thinnings to 4 residual stand levels. Residual stand levels were .25 percent, .35 percent, .45 percent, and .55 percent of maximum stand density. A computer program was written to determine log value using output from FVS, individual tree information on surface characteristics, and current domestic and export log prices and sort specifications. The volume and value outcomes from the range of thinning regimes were compared to each other and to an unthinned regime. Fifty years after thinning, stands that were lightly thinned increased slightly in total stand volume (includes volume removed at thinning) when compared to the unthinned stand. Increases were 1 percent to 7 percent more of the total volume of the unthinned stand. Heavy thinning decreased total stand volume. Fifty years after thinning, stands that were lightly thinned increased slightly in total stand value (includes value removed at thinning) when compared to the unthinned stand. Increases were 1 percent to 6 percent more than the total value of the unthinned stand. Heavy thinnings reduced total stand value. When the dollar value outcomes were calculated in terms of present net worth of the net revenue (logging and hauling costs included) at a range of discount rates and with and without real price increases, the thinning regimes that removed the most volume generally had the greatest present net worth. The regime with the greatest present net worth could be manipulated by changing the discount rate and real price increase. Analysis of the 40 largest trees per acre showed that the simulated thinning regimes result in very little to no individual tree growth response of the 40 largest trees per acre. The effects of branch presence and size in the first 40 foot log on log value were minimal. The determining factor of log value was size (small end diameter). These results indicate that thinning 65- to 80- year-old noble fir dominated stands on the WSIR does not significantly increase value or growth. Thinning does bring an immediate economic return. The decision to thin or not should be based on the importance of economic return at various points in time and the desired stand structure. While such data have been amassed for a wide variety of vertebrate tissues, few studies have been concerned with invertebrates and especially insects where somatic polyploidy is developed to an unusually high degree. Relative amounts of DNA were determined cytophotometrically on individual Feulgen-stained nuclei of hypodermis, ventriculus, fat cells, blood cells, anterior silk gland, and proventriculus. Graphs of the determined DNA values indicated the presence of nuclear classes falling into polyploid ratios, The majority of blood cell and fat cell nuclei had class I values (= diploid), while class II and III (= tetraploid and octoploid) DNA values represented about 17 to 20 percent of the total nuclear population. The majority of DNA values of the ventriculus nuclei fell into the second class while 6.8 percent were considered as class I. The hypodermal nuclei were mostly of class I, while class II values represented 5.5 percent of the total number of determinations. Nuclei of the proventriculus and the anterior silk gland showed a broad spectrum of DNA values ranging from classes IV to VIII including many intermediate values. The method of measurement was analyzed for sources of error. Various interpretations were offered for the variations in DNA values including the role of endomitosis, definitive polyploidy, aneuploidy, differential gene replication, etc. In the case of the anterior silk gland and the proventriculus a possible relationship between DNA amounts and ceIl activity is indicated. The traditional net-present-value (NPV) and other discounted-cash-flows (DCF) methods cannot properly capture the management's flexibility and strategic value aspects of a fishery, thus they may understate its value. The rationale for using an option-based approach to capital budgeting arises from its potential to conceptualize and quantify this flexibility, as new information arrives, to alter its operating strategy, to defer investments, to shut down (and restart) fishery development. Real Options valuation has traditionally been applied in the area of natural resource investments different from fishing resources. This paper presents a general bioeconomic model for the value of a fishery. It suffices to determine not only the value of the fishery when open and closed, but also the optimal policy for opening, closing and setting the harvest rate. Moreover, the paper turns to the valuation of a fishery investment opportunity and the optimal investment rule. The natural growth rate of fishing resource stock and the production function are those of the Schaefer model. Finally, results for the Pacific Yellowfin ~l~na are presented. Em. Thell. var. 'Stephens' and 'Yamhill') grown in western Oregon in an environment with a range of susceptibility to take-all root rot (Gaumannomyces graminis var. tritici Walker). Cropping sequences and expected disease severity considered in the study were: first year wheat after clover (low risk of severe take-all root rot: Nixon I experiment), second year wheat with high disease infection in the previous crop (high risk of severe take-all root rot: Keyt II experiment), second year wheat with low disease infection in the previous crop (moderate risk of severe take-all root rot: Nixon II and Coon experiment), third year wheat (high risk of severe take-all root rot: Jones experiment), fifth year wheat (high risk of severe take-all root rot: Keyt II experiment), and eighteenth year wheat (take-all decline established: the pathogen is present in the soil but does not cause damage, Evers experiment). Nitrogen treatments were applied at 0, 67, 134, and 202 kg/ha in all experiments where wheat followed wheat and at 0, 45, 90, and 134 kg/ha in the experiment where wheat followed clover. Chloride treatments were applied at 0, 45, and 90 kg/ha in all experiments and a rate of 134 kg C1/ha was also used on the Jones experiment. Nitrogen was predominantly supplied from urea while ammonium chloride supplied chloride and ammonium sulfate supplied the crop requirement for sulfur (about 20 kg/ha). Fertilizers were top-dressed in split application with chloride and sulfur containing fertilizers applied first (February) and urea applied later (March) in all experiments but those conducted in the Nixon farm where a single fertilizer was applied in March. Crop response was measured through the effects of N and c1 treatments on dry matter production, plant nitrogen content, plant nitrogen uptake and plant percent nitrogen recovery, as well as grain yield, yield components, grain nitrogen content, grain protein content, grain nitrogen uptake, and grain percent nitrogen recovery. The results of the study strongly indicated that take-all root rot was only a problem in the Jones, Keyt I, and Keyt II experiments and was most severe in third year wheat (Jones experiment). This also was the only experiment with significant (p = 0.05) response from rates of 202 kg N/ha. Nitrogen fertilization was the main factor that greatly influenced the levels of the variables studied while chloride fertilization generally did not have a significant (p = 0.05) influence. 134 kg N/ha was generally the rate accounting for the best levels of each variable studied in all experiments except in the Jones experiment as precised earlier. Crop response was also affected by a relatively long 'dry' period (April 20th to June 20th), particularly in the experiment where take-all root rot was a problem. As a commercial pollinator, the western honey bee, Apis mellifera, may be utilized to pollinate monocultures such as L. alba. The pollen fidelity of a pollinator with regard to its intended crop determines the efficiency and overall benefit of the pollinator’s presence in the field. This research examines pollen fidelity of A. mellifera with regard to L. alba in a commercial setting. The average L. alba proportion of total trapped pollen was determined to be 88.5%. The high fidelity of A. mellifera to L. alba suggests that it was beneficial to have a supplemental pollinator present, but to definitively determine that a comparative study would need to be performed.
