  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Probability proportional to size sampling of Douglas-fir from aerial photography Author: Rogers, Roger Allan This experiment was designed to investigate the use of volume estimations from aerial photography and probability proportional to size (PPS) sample selection in the development of a practical sampling design for timber volume estimation on small land areas of Pacific Northwest Douglas -fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii, Franco). The major problem of measuring exact stand height to predict stand volume from aerial photos was overcome by the development of two new volume equations which use percent crown closure, visible crown diameter and height classes as the independent variables. By the use of height classes, the photo interpreter is required to separate stand heights as to tall, medium or short. Equations are presented for both board- and cubic-foot volumes. Two computer programs were developed which reduce office calculations to a minimum. The programs compute photo volumes per plot, total gross and net volume estimations per area, standard errors and select the field plots to be sampled. The sampling design was tested on four test areas, using both quarter- and one-acre photo plots, and quarter-acre fixed-area and variable-area field plots at four photo scales. Based on these results a sample of about 20 field measured quarter-acre field plots combined with a 100 percent photo cruise on 1:7,000 aerial photos would be expected to produce gross volume estimations for a forty-acre tract of + 10 percent. at a 68 percent confidence level. A new technology, which is developing partially with the support of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, will help to inventory and monitor surface resources in a more comprehensive manner than previously possible. Research in southeastern Arizona for the past six years has been developing methodology that would permit the use of space and high altitude imagery for natural vegetation and related resource investigations. This paper reports on three meaningful research contributions in remote sensing of natural vegetation. They are (1) a natural vegetation classification suitable for remote sensing use, (2) a technique for objectively comparing space imagery for relative information content, and (3) a sample scheme for using small scale photography to identify and estimate areas of vegetation types. The natural vegetation classification contains 31 "vegetation types" that were developed for a 3, 200 square mile area. The types are ecologically determined from association tables, and are, therefore, suitable for use in remote sensing applications. This is possible primarily because the types are related to photo identifiable landform variables. The classification is suitable for generalized levels of land use planning, but this was not tested. Three types of space imagery were evaluated for apparent photographic information content. The technique avoided subject-image relationships by concentrating directly on image characteristics. The approach, coined "image groupability", should be a worthwhile contribution to the larger problem of comparative imagery interpretations. An example demonstrates an approach to objective photo stratification based on image groupability results. The third accomplishment involved design and execution of a comparative two stage sampling scheme to estimate kind and extent of vegetation types. The comparison was between two space photos substituted at the first sampling stage. At the second stage (high altitude photography) potential secondary sampling units were categorized by image similarity rather than by the more complicated process of ground subject interpretations. Efficiency gains from space photo stratification were not substantial; however, the sample scheme was effective. Furthermore, clustering, a space photo sampling artifact, saved an estimated 32-35 percent in "working time" expenses when making ground checks by helicopter. Synthesizing perspectives from Bruner (1957), and the Mind Only School of Buddhism, the current study examined the effect of a persons’ own behavior on knowledge activation. Both social cognitive psychology and the Mind Only School posit that perception is based on previously learned knowledge. Knowledge is accumulated through an individual’s experience, and information is categorized by the mind. Once mental categories are constructed they are ready for use in interpreting stimuli. Some categories, such as hostility, have shown to be activated through a person’s own behavior (Chandler and Schwarz, 2009). Methods of the current study partially replicated those by Chandler and Schwarz (2009), where extension of the middle finger activated constructs of aggression. Participants extended their middle-fingers (as if flipping off) toward a photo of their mothers, or a photo of a different female, and subsequently rated a character on hostility related characteristics. The hypothesis of the study was that those who extended their middle-finger toward a photo of their mother would perceive the character as more aggressive than those who extended their middle finger toward a photo of a different female.
