However, up until recently, little was known about how the Army Medical Department operated within Fort Yamhill’s system. This thesis combines extensive archival research and exploratory excavations to create an understanding of military hospital operation and medical practices of this era and provide insight into the hospital’s construction and operation at Fort Yamhill. Detailed information regarding fort medical staff has been used to create an image of the hospital and its operation throughout the fort’s occupation. Performance evaluation of conventionally reinforced concrete (CRC) bridge superstructure elements with diagonal cracks is of interest to the bridge engineering community. Standardized methods to predict service-level stress magnitudes in cracked bridge girders under combined bending and shear forces are not available. An analysis procedure was developed to determine the response of CRC bridge girders with existing diagonal cracks. The method estimates the stirrup stress range without prior knowledge of the previous stirrup strain history. Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT), a sectional analysis procedure, is used in the current specifications to predict capacity of CRC and prestressed concrete beams and relies on equilibrium and compatibility conditions based on an initial uncracked section. In this research, the method was used to predict service-level performance for cracked sections. Effective response prediction of a previously cracked beam was achieved through alteration of the constitutive relationships to permit softening behavior of the concrete to begin much earlier in the loading history. Validation of the procedure was performed through comparison of analytically predicted stirrup strains with those from full-size laboratory specimens. Empirical data were found to correspond well with the predicted responses. The cracked section analysis procedure was then utilized to estimate the potential for low-cycle fatigue damage of an in-service bridge. A moment and shear interaction surface corresponding to stirrup yielding was estimated and compared with the load effects produced from a data set of over 14,000 permitted trucks to estimate the anticipated life of the bridge based on low-cycle fatigue damage. Educators and librarians in favor of strict standards for education libraries believe that they would give greater credibility to collections and services; those opposed believe that each teachers college and teacher education program is unique and that the library should reflect the parent institutions's individuality. This study also examined the complex nature of the literature of education and discussed the history and development of education libraries. In the absence of education library standards, librarians need to use established evaluation measures in their report to accreditation agencies; several measures suitable for education libraries are included in this study. This thesis brings together gender and genre criticism to consider Virginia Woolf s memoir, "A Sketch of the Past," as a modern experiment in rewriting the traditions and conventions of Victorian autobiography. This thesis will demonstrate how Woolf specifically disrupts the conventions of linear representations of time and the assumed authority of authorship in order to establish her autobiography outside the realm of a tradition which seeks to marginalize the experience of women. Woolf uses language to renegotiate her relationship to autobiographical traditions by exploring different authorial positions and strategies which question the Victorian paradigm such as foregrounding her own compositional process, creating distance between herself as a subject and as a producer of autobiography, and insisting on the ways conventional autobiography ignores the experiences of women. Woolf locates herself outside the traditional temporal framework of autobiography in order to consider what is omitted from autobiography under this arrangement. Finally, Woolf uses literal and metaphoric representations of mirrors to reveal what lies unseen, unrealized, and unspoken in the telling of women's lives. Under the presupposition that Woolf aims to create a woman's autobiography, and thus must undo the ways a traditional autobiography does not address the lives of women, Woolf proves that autobiography is a genre important to the successful incorporation of women's lives into literary history. Woolf simultaneously creates a precedent for future women writers to open up their exclusion from autobiography and voice a history that has been silenced, misrepresented, and ignored within the traditions of autobiography.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Modeling surface water and groundwater interactions near Milton- Freewater, Oregon Author: Petrides Jimenez, Aristides Crisostomos The gravel aquifer of the Oregon side of Walla Walla River Basin has a strong hydrologic connection to surface water through a series of springs, unlined irrigation canals, the Walla Walla River, numerous wells and, since 2004, artificial recharge to the shallow aquifer using infiltration basins. The finite element Integrated Water Flow Model (IWFM) developed by California Department of Water Resources was used to quantify all of the major hydrologic features of the basin. Using the information provided by the Walla Walla Basin Watershed Council, irrigation districts, and previous studies conducted at Oregon State University and by consultants, the model was setup and calibrated, and a water budget simulation was performed for the years of 2003 to 2006. It is shown that close to 96 percent of the land use water demand goes to agriculture growing 16 major crops. 60 percent of the water comes from surface water diversions flowing through unlined irrigation canals , which themselves lose 28 percent of their inflow to the unconfined gravel aquifer. The calibrated and validated model was used to simulate the flow of the Johnson Creek Springs, which were shown to have increased flow due to the artificial recharge project. The comparison includes aspatial methods such as traditional regression, inverse regression and reduced major axis, and spatial methods such as kriging, cokriging, kriging with an external drift, and conditional simulation. The LAI maps will serve as input in process models to obtain maps of net primary production (NPP). The present work was done in the context of the BigFoot project (http://www.fsl.orst.edu/_larse/bigfoot) which focuses on the validation of the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) land cover, LAI/fAPAR (fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation), and NPP products (http://modarcKgsfc.nasa.gov/MODIS, with the main objective of scaling up from in situ ground measurements to the moderate spatial resolution of MODIS data products (250 - 1000 m spatial resolution). Due to the clumped structure of the boreal forest and the presence of a highly reflective understory, vegetation indices derived from remotely sensed data were not useful in explaining LAI variability. The use of mid-IR bands and tree cover data improved the performance of the models. Kriging with an external drift performed better in the presence of trends and anisotropy. An integrated aspatial (reduced major axis)/spatial (cokriging) method produced a useful compromise between local accuracy and pattern representation. Conditional simulation maintained global accuracy and spatial variability. Conditional simulation also provided a measure of spatial uncertainty useful to assess how LAI variability affects process models, and to evaluate how spatial variability influences the upscaling from Landsat ETM+ (25-30 m) to MODIS (250-1000 m) spatial resolutions. Our main conclusion is that the selection of the optimal mapping technique depends on user requirements, because not all the desired map characteristics can be achieved simultaneously. Properly designed sprinkler systems often eliminate irrigation problems, because the application rate and quantity of water applied can be readily controlled. Research workers who have studied sprinkler irrigation disagree on many things. Differences are found in the literature concerning the procedures used to determine sprinkler distribution uniformity and the optimum rate of application of water to the soil. Several authors suggest that moisture movement within the soil occurs after an irrigation. If trans location of moisture occurs, it may be possible to use sprinkler system design specifications that are less critical than those now in use. In order to determine the effect of sprinkler application rate on the resulting soil moisture distribution it is necessary to have criteria relating degree of ponding, crop cover, and slope of the land to the uniformity of soil moisture. Experimental plots were designed and prepared to study and relate these factors to each other. Sprinkler distribution measurements were made to be used in computing sprinkler uniformity. Using neutron equipment, soil moisture determinations were made before the irrigation, one day after irrigation, and three days after irrigation to determine the effect of the irrigation.
