Given today's reality of racism in this society, the existing literature addressing this topic is inadequate. Using an open-ended questionnaire, the responses of 272 students enrolled in speech communication and education courses at a Northwestern land grant institution were analyzed using a descriptive methodology. Students having no experience with a Black educator answered the questionnaire from an imagined standpoint. Results indicated a large majority of the predominately White subject pool found their Black high school educator(s) to be credible. Aspects of institutionalized racism emerged when students deemed their Black educator(s) credible by measuring them against an assumed "White standard of credibility." Findings from this study provide additional evidence of the racism, albeit covert, in our public school classrooms. The documentation of methods consisted of: primary data collection of soil samples, geographical coordinates, georeferencing, basemap creation, laboratory machine operation, laboratory methods, laboratory quality control planning, statistical analysis, and geo-statistical analysis using geospatial interpolation tools. Quantitative information must derive from measurement, and we cannot measure the soil everywhere; we can at best measure the soil with planned samples. So accurate information for any region is available only at isolated points or for small bodies of soil. Whatever we state for intermediate positions or larger blocks of land involves some kind of interpolation or estimation from the measurements. That in turn carries with it uncertainty, and so we want some measure of that uncertainty too. This research focus is more of a tutorial on how to think about measurement, interpolation, variability of pH and nutrients in soil while using this data in a GIS. Author: Ropicki, Andrew, Larkin, Sherry Many of the tangible benefits of catch share programs (e.g., reducing overcapacity) are dependent on the trading of shares. Additional trading-related questions (such as whether landings will change port or be concentrated geographically) are also important to the overall evaluation of a fishery, but are often asked only during post-implementation program reviews. Using both quota trading data and survey data on information sharing among Gulf of Mexico IFQ fishers, this research analyzes the overlap between fisher information sharing networks and quota trading networks to measure the extent to which quota trading is accomplished through social networks. Comparing these two networks will provide information on the role of acquaintanceships in quota trading markets and the value of using fisher survey data on information sharing to a gain a better understanding of trading behavior. The insights of this analysis could provide policy makers with a means of estimating how quota will flow through a fishery prior to implementation of a catch share program by surveying potential participants (commercial, for-hire, and/or recreational) about their information sharing networks. These insights would allow policy makers to predict possible issues related to catch share management in a fishery prior to implementation and design the management program in response to these potential issues. Replicated studies from public and private land in southern Oregon and northwest Utah are the first to document sage grouse response to this type of landscape-level habitat restoration effort. Despite conventional wisdom that female sage grouse use the same nesting areas every year, space-starved hens in Oregon were quick to use restored habitats made available by conifer removal: within four years, 29% of the tracked sage grouse were nesting within and near restored habitats. In Utah, 86% of hens avoided conifer invaded habitats, and those using restored habitats were more likely to raise a brood. Taken together, studies show that landscape-level conifer removal can effectively increase habitat availability and boost success for nesting and brooding sage grouse.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Provincial coordination and inter-institutional collaboration in British Columbia's college, university college, and institute system Author: Gaber, Devron Alexander, 1952- The purpose of this study was to better understand the historical development of the British Columbia (B.C.) community college, university college, and institute system with the focus on the changing nature of voluntary inter-institutional collaboration in relation to provincial coordination. The study also examined the related themes of centralization and decentralization within B.C.'s system and the development of a provincial system of autonomous institutions. The methodology used was qualitative, and more specifically, interpretive in nature and based on the historical method and the underlying assumptions of hermeneutics. The researcher began by analyzing pertinent primary and secondary sources of literature in relation to the study's purpose. The findings from the literature analysis formed the basis for interview questions that were asked of 10 key informants to fill gaps in understanding and confirm findings. The study found that the B.C. system began as a decentralized group of autonomous, community-oriented institutions but became more centrally coordinated by government in the late 1970s and early 1980s, largely because of increased costs and a worsening economy. The 1990s witnessed a high level of centralized decision making with stakeholder involvement, which has been replaced by a move towards decentralization and greater institutional autonomy in the early 2000s based on the market ideology of the new government. Throughout the decades, the B.C. system has had a history of voluntary collaboration but that collaboration has been gradually blended over time with provincial coordination as government built a system of autonomous institutions. The main conclusions of the study are that an appropriate balance may be achievable between centralization and decentralization in order to maintain a coherent system of accountable, autonomous institutions but would need systematic efforts by government and institutions and a policy framework for system governance. Such a balance may be achieved by learning from the lessons of B.C.'s rich history and from the experiences of other jurisdictions. To achieve system goals, the Ministry and institutions could build on the history of voluntary collaborative efforts, which seem particularly important among educators at the program level. The Ministry might reward such collaboration and hold institutions accountable for it. Legacies help family members to articulate family identity, learn more about family history, and provide succeeding generations with information about family culture and ethnicity. This qualitative study examines how older mothers transmit family meanings, history, and culture to family members through legacies and how ethnic histories influenced this process. Thirty older Armenian American mothers residing in California were interviewed. A life course perspective provides the overarching framework for analysis. Participants described the legacies they received and those they planned to pass on to family members. Emphasis was given to those legacies that symbolized connection to family, underscored family cohesion, and accentuated Armenian cultural roots. Individual age, larger historical events, and the gendered construction of family life influenced both the receipt of legacies and those that were passed on to family members. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Armenian families were forced to leave their native homeland. Because of these events, Armenian families passed few physical legacies on to family members. Legacies took on other forms such as stories, rituals, family gatherings, religious participation, cooking, and service to others. Women viewed their legacies within the context of motherhood and worked to ensure that certain legacies would be valued and remembered by future generations. Shaped by age, generational position, and ethnic identity, women expressed variation in types of legacies and the ways they planned to share them with family members. Women reported tension when certain legacies lacked meaning for their children (in-law) and grandchildren due to the influences of assimilation, intermarriage, changes in family and paid work patterns, and the characteristics and interests of adult children. The majority of today's youth succeed in the traditional educational classroom. However, greater numbers of our children are not experiencing success in the traditional classroom and are at-risk of dropping out of school before completing graduation requirements. The magnitude and urgency of this problem was addressed in 1990 by the National Goals 2000 report. Even with this increase in awareness, the dropout rates have not decreased. This qualitative study addressed two questions: 1) Do childhood developmental deficiencies create factors which place a child at-risk of dropping out of school before completing graduation requirements?; 2) Can the practice of education intervene and reduce dropout potential? The research was framed by an examination of theories of child development by Bowlby (Attachment Theory), Erikson (Psychosocial Development), and Bandura (Social Learning Theory). Factors that place a student at risk of dropping out of school were also examined. The at-risk students in an Alternative Education Classroom from a high school in a rural community were asked to write a history of their school lives. The histories of nine of these students were used to provide insight into the developmental milestones of these students. Follow-up interviews were conducted with all students and their parents. All interviews were separate and confidential. School records of the nine students were reviewed to provide additional validation to the memories of the students and their parents. The results were triangulated back to the theoretical perspectives of Bowlby, Erickson, and Bandura. The data reflected a strong correlation between negative development and factors that were noted in the school histories. The data also, reinforced the importance of the classroom teacher/student relationship. This data infers that school dropout rates can decrease with insightful programming that involves the community working together to impact in a positive manner the developmental factors that place students at-risk.
