This interest stems from the fundamental role played by this molecule in the photochemistry of the atmosphere, mainly as a cleansing agent of environmental pollutants. Knowing the concentration of the radical would enable scientists to corroborate current atmospheric models and to predict future trends in the atmosphere. Even though there is a great interest in the determination of atmospheric concentrations of this molecule, the task has been very difficult. This is mainly due to the lack of a method sensitive enough to detect concentrations around 106 molecules per cubic centimeter. The most accurate method presently available is the method of laser induced fluorescence using the fluorescence assay with gas expansion technique (LIF-FAGE). This method involves low pressure excitation of HO from its ground state to its lowest electronic excited state and observing the consequent fluorescence around 309 nm. The procedure is done at a pressure of 5 Torr to maximize the fluorescence lifetime of the radical and to minimize the interference of photolytic species. Background determination is achieved by chemical modulation using isobutane in a second channel of the same cell which removes the HO signal. In this study an assessment of the level of ozone interference in LIFF AGE has been done by calculating the relative population distribution of HO among its rotational levels and from this, determining its temperature. When the laser passes through the excitation detection cell it photolyses the ozone present producing in this way the highly reactive 0 1(D). When this molecule reacts with water or with isobutane it produces HO, and this is the source of interference in the actual measurements. In the determination of the relative population distributions of the different HO species, it was found that the naturally occurring HO has a thermal distribution with a temperature of about 300 K. The HO molecules produced from the reaction of 0 1(D) with isobutane also showed a thermal distribution with a temperature of about 230 K. On the other hand, the HO produced from the reaction of 0 1(D) with water did not show a thermal distribution. Two distinct temperatures were observed for this case: one around 200 K for values of K = 1 to 4, and the second one around 3000 K for values of K = 5 to 6. These values agree with previous experimental results for LIF methods by other authors except for the fact that the deviation from the first temperature determined by other authors starts at K = 6 or 7. To date, there have been no largescale effectiveness trials of programmatic efforts to provide either improved cookstoves or household water filters at scale in a low-income country. In this paper we describe the design of a clusterrandomized trial to evaluate the impact of a national-level program to distribute and promote the use of improved cookstoves and advanced water filters to the poorest quarter of households in Rwanda. Methods/Design: We randomly allocated 72 sectors (administratively defined units) in Western Province to the intervention, with the remaining 24 sectors in the province serving as controls. In the intervention sectors, roughly 100,000 households received improved cookstoves and household water filters through a government-sponsored program targeting the poorest quarter of households nationally. The primary outcome measures are the incidence of acute respiratory infection (ARI) and diarrhea among children under five years of age. Over a one-year surveillance period, all cases of acute respiratory infection (ARI) and diarrhea identified by health workers in the study area will be extracted from records maintained at health facilities and by community health workers (CHW). In addition, we are conducting intensive, longitudinal data collection among a random sample of households in the study area for in-depth assessment of coverage, use, environmental exposures, and additional health measures. Discussion: Although previous research has examined the impact of providing household water treatment and improved cookstoves on child health, there have been no studies of national-level programs to deliver these interventions at scale in a developing country. The results of this study, the first RCT of a large-scale programmatic cookstove or household water filter intervention, will inform global efforts to reduce childhood morbidity and mortality from diarrheal disease and pneumonia. In the present study, to determine how cognition changes as illness emerges, we examined baseline neurocognitive performance in a large sample of helping-seeking youth ranging in clinical state from low-risk for psychosis through individuals at clinical high-risk (CHR) for illness to early first-episode patients (EFEP). At baseline, the MATRICS Cognitive Consensus battery was administered to 322 individuals (205 CHRs, 28 EFEPs, and 89 help-seeking controls, HSC) that were part of the larger Early Detection, Intervention and Prevention of Psychosis Program study. CHR individuals were further divided into those who did (CHR-T; n = 12, 6.8%) and did not (CHR-NT, n = 163) convert to psychosis over follow-up (Mean = 99.20 weeks, SD = 21.54). ANCOVAs revealed that there were significant overall group differences (CHR, EFEP, HSC) in processing speed, verbal learning, and overall neurocognition, relative to healthy controls (CNTL). In addition, the CHR-NTs performed similarly to the HSC group, with mild to moderate cognitive deficits relative to the CTRL group. The CHR-Ts mirrored the EFEP group, with large deficits in processing speed, working memory, attention/vigilance, and verbal learning (>1 SD below CNTLs). Interestingly, only verbal learning impairments predicted transition to psychosis, when adjusting for age, education, symptoms, antipsychotic medication, and neurocognitive performance in the other domains. Our findings suggest that large neurocognitive deficits are present prior to illness onset and represent vulnerability markers for psychosis. The results of this study further reinforce that verbal learning should be specifically targeted for preventive intervention for psychosis. The TAP is unique in that it is a collaborative effort between a public transit agency and local human service agencies to blend traditionally separate assessments for eligibility for transportation services. Specifically, in the TAP, Lane Transit District subcontracts with human services agencies to conduct personalized in-home assessments with individuals with special transportation needs and who are requesting paratransit rides. While in the home assessing an individual’s transportation needs and abilities, human service workers act as a gateway to other social services, as well. The goal of the TAP is to provide access to the most appropriate transportation services when and where individuals need them, in the most personalized, streamlined, and cost-effective way. The TAP has been fully operational for one year following a development and start-up period. There has been considerable interest internally, in the state, and throughout the U.S. in how the project began and how it is working to date. As a result, the project's leaders boldly decided to commission a study. Conducted in the summer of 2011, this case study analysis generated a rich and multi-faceted picture, at one point in time, of this unique, collaborative project for assessing individuals’ transportation needs and capabilities while, at the same time, connecting people to the local human services network. Due to the early timing of the study (prior to the ability of the program to demonstrate attributable impacts), the study also serves as a process evaluation designed to document how the TAP was ideally supposed to work, how it is actuallyworking, and how it could be improved. In addition to the developmental findings, this report contains a detailed history and description of the TAP, an estimation of how easily the program can be replicated and recommendations for enhancement of this innovative human service-transportation delivery model. Because of the dynamic nature of the project, it is important to note that the findings reported here represent only a slice-in-time view. Already changes have been made in the project since the data were gathered and analyzed.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Street Trees in the Urban Forest Canopy: Portland, Oregon Author: Poracsky, Joseph, Banis, David Year: 2005 Attempts to identify the contribution of street trees to the overall urban forest of a city have been rare and lack consensus on how to measure that contribution – percentage of trees, percentage of canopy cover, or percentage of leaf area. The actual numeric values presented in the literature also vary over a broad range and often are based on estimates, extrapolations from aggregated data, or simply stated with no empirical data referenced. This study was undertaken to evaluate the contribution of street trees to canopy in Portland, Oregon. The study involved both visual and digital analysis of multi-band aerial images, field observation, and GIS analysis involving several ancillary data themes. The strategy was to calculate the street tree component (STC) of the urban forest canopy within a sample of areas in the city and generalize that pattern to the whole city. The analysis indicates that street trees constitute 3.4% of the whole study area. In commercial / industrial areas the value drops to only 1.1% and in residential areas rises to 4.8%. For the overall study area the STC of the canopy is 17.2%, a value in the middle of the range of values found in the published literature. In commercial / industrial areas we found a value of 23.7% and a value of 16.6% for residential areas. Residential areas are overall better treed than commercial / industrial areas, but do not rely on street trees to contribute as large a percentage to overall canopy as do commercial / industrial areas. Available planting space in the right-of-way (ROW) is much more nearly constant (or independent of land cover) than the amount of planting space available inside a block. Therefore, the STC tends to vary inversely with the total amount of vegetated area. As the vegetated (read, plantable) area decreases, the ROW becomes a more significant space for planting and the STC increases. Conversely, as the vegetated area increases, the ROW becomes a less significant space for planting and the STC decreases. For both residential and commercial / industrial areas, the percentage of street tree area within the total canopy varies from locale to locale. The relatively small sampling used in this study suggests that neighborhood age and physical characteristics influence the STC in a given neighborhood, particularly for residential areas. Analysis allowed division of the study area into five residential neighborhood groups that attempt to reflect local differences. A larger / more detailed sampling would allow for improved delineation, perhaps below the level of neighborhood. Three generalized spatial patterns emerge for Portland. Street tree canopy as a percent of area seems to follow an east-west gradient, with lower values to the east and higher values to the west. Street trees as a component of the total canopy takes on an inverted-U shape, with higher values in the Inner Eastside and lower values to the east and to the west. Objective: The objective of this exploratory study was to evaluate associations between total and specific types of dietary fat intake and 1) hormone concentrations and 2) the risk of sporadic anovulation in a cohort of 259 regularly menstruating women in the BioCycle Study. Design: Endogenous reproductive hormones were measured up to 8 times/cycle for up to 2 cycles, with visits scheduled with the use of fertility monitors. Dietary intake was assessed with up to four 24-h recalls/cycle. Linear mixed models and generalized linear models were used to evaluate the associations between dietary fatty acids and both reproductive hormone concentrations and ovulatory status. All models were adjusted for total energy intake, age, body mass index, and race. Results: Relative to the lowest levels of percentage of energy from total fat, the highest tertile was associated with increased total and free testosterone concentrations (total: percentage change of 4.0%; 95% CI: 0.7%, 7.3%; free: percentage change of 4.1%; 95% CI: 0.5%, 7.7%). Results: Insurance status was a significant predictor of cervical cancer screening, but the effect varied by race/ethnicity and age. In our study uninsured non-Hispanic white women were less likely to receive a Pap test than were uninsured women of other races. Young, uninsured Hispanic women were more likely to receive a Pap test than were young, fully insured Hispanic women, a finding not previously reported. Conclusion: Electronic health records enable population-level surveillance in community health centers and can reveal factors influencing use of preventive services.
