We are interested in the adjustment of the child to the changes which occur during separation and divorce, and we maintain the attitude that the lives of children are affected in some way when a marriage or family unit dissolves. A generally accepted belief is that divorce produces negative consequences in the lives of children as shown in their behavior. However, recently a number of studies have suggested that divorce need not be a negative experience, at least to the degree most people feel it is. Factors that influence the effects on children include: the intensity of the conflict between the divorcing partners; the degree to which parents demonstrate concern for the children and help them prepare for the separation; the child’s attachment to the custodial parent; and the level of maturity and general personality characteristics of the child. The primary goal of the study presented here is to determine the extent to which negative behavior changes in children are visible immediately following a divorce. Additionally we wish to describe those changes and determine their frequency. Finally, we wish to relate such changes to certain to certain social variables including economic status and age and sex of the children. As a corollary, regional correlations are possible. The stratigraphic relationship between the Snowshoe Formation, the subjacent Hyde Formation and the superjacent Trowbridge Formation is also investigated. Over one thousand fossils were collected from five stratigraphic sections and eight localities. The sections were measured using tape and compass techniques and the relative stratigraphic ranges of the fossils calculated using a computer program written specifically for this project. The ammonite fauna, dominated by the families Hildoceratidae, Stephanoceratidae and Sonniniidae, is systematically described. The Snowshoe Formation was deposited in marine waters of neritic depths during late Toarcian to early Callovian time, with the Bathonian apparently unrepresented. The lower member correlates in part with the Weberg and Warm Springs Members of the Snowshoe Formation in the Suplee area whereas the middle and Silvies members correlate in part with the Basey Member. Most of the Snowshoe Formation has, or probably has, correlatives within the North American continent. The lower contact of the Snowshoe Formation in the Izee area is gradational and the basal deposits non-diachronous whereas the upper contact is either diachronous or represents an unconformity. Certainly another group of people who suffer from oppression are the elderly. When a person in our society reaches age 65, he or she may suddenly be perceived as of decreased worth and may face forced retirement and quite often may have to adjust to a lifestyle of poverty. If an elderly person's physical health begins to wane, a nursing home may suddenly become the day to day environment he or she must accept. The therapists in the Residential Care Program, which offers mental health services to residents of nursing homes, at Elahan Mental Health Clinic and Center for Family Living in Vancouver, Washington realized that assertion training might be one way to help their elderly clients gain more control over their live and thus implemented an assertion training program. The following is an evaluation of that module which was introduced as part of the Elderly Day Treatment Program in 1977.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Drowning In It: State Crime and Refugee Deaths in the Borderlands Author: Cochrane, Brandy Marie Year: 2012 This paper examines the current state of border hardening against refugees in the European Union and Australia through the lens of state crime. Border hardening strategies are described for both of these areas and a theoretical basis of state crime victimology is used to examine the refugees who encounter this border hardening. The present study analyzes two data sets on border deaths, one for the European Union and one for Australia, to examine the demographics of the refugees who perish while attempting to transgress the border. Results indicated that there remains a significant amount of missing data, suggesting that official methods of record-keeping are necessary to determine the most basic demographics, such as gender and age, so analyses can be run to determine significance in this area. One clear finding was that migrants most frequently die from drowning (EU: 83.6%; AU: 93%) compared to any other cause. Also, there is indication that those from disadvantaged areas of origin (such as the Middle East and Africa) are more likely to die in the borderlands than others in the dataset. Practical implications of the findings are discussed along with suggestions for future research. I interviewed ten white, middle class girls between the ages of ten and thirteen on various subjects including demographics, self-esteem, music, Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls and finally, experiences and pressures associated with being a girl. One key finding was the unique set of circumstances and experiences present which may foster higher self-esteem: 1) freedom from gender normative behavior; 2) skill mastery associated with learning an instrument; 3) support for a wider range of self-expression; 4) removal of the male gaze and male approval [in a female only space]; and 5) access to female role models. There was one primary research question explored: How do single father's experience parenthood? This is explored through four sub questions and discussions about daily life and childrearing alone; childcare and work and family conflicts; use of services and support networks; and of particular interest, gender and the influence of masculinity. Through an analysis of interviews with 14 fathers of varying class status, age, education, and time spent as a single father, I captured broadly the ways in which these men maneuver their childrearing with their lives, and how they are challenging, yet still upholding aspects of hegemonic masculinity. By exploring how these fathers maneuver childrearing as a male in society I assist in gaining insight and understanding to this population that has been previously overlooked in academic research. Both the Oregon Senate and the Oregon House of Representatives were examined for the 56th (1971) and the 57th (1973) session. Indicies of partisanship, or party cohesion were developed for both parties in both houses during both sessions. Each legislator was also assigned an index of partisanship. The indicies of partisanship for the parties were the average percentage of the members of the two parties voting together on those issues which underwent "party votes." A party vote was defined as any vote on which the majority of one party was opposed by at . least the majority of the other party. The individual index of partisanship for each legislator was that percentage of time the legislator was on the same side as the majority of his or her party during party votes. These two indices, of party partisanship and individual partisanship allowed comparison of the parties themselves and various subgroups within the parties such as urban legislators, legislators under thirty years of age and women legislators. All calculation was done by means of a special program on an IBM 1130 computer. This impression stems first of all from the beauty of the tone and the rhythm of Rilke’s poetical language and from the occurrence of many words that can be associated with music. In addition to this, his creative work was influenced considerably by his own experiences with a variety of musical sounds and by the many thoughts in which he tried to deal with the deeper meaning and function of music. This thesis attempts to analyze Rilke’s relationship to music within the framework of his artistic development. I will try to show that Rilke, in spite of his skepticism about his own musical abilities, must have had at least an average talent for this art. Undoubtedly, he would therefore have been able to learn how to sing or to play a musical instrument, had he not been discouraged from doing so at too early an age and had his talents not been channeled so early into writing poetry.
