Additionally, some of the characteristics often employed in explaining the phenomenon in cities are manifested in the city of Portland. For example, Portland is endowed with a distinctive and well established downtown area that provides opportunities for the establishment of businesses as well as white-collar job opportunities. By the standards of the U.S. Bureau of the Census, Portland has a relatively large population and several older neighborhoods. The city provides its residents the feel for inner-city living, such as its beautiful waterfront scenery, its high-rise and park block apartments, its cultural facilities and unique transit mall. These criteria underscore the selection of Portland as the geographical area of this research. The purpose of this research itself is to assess the urban structural changes that occurred in Portland between 1970 and 1980. The research used a sample of inner-city neighborhoods from the city to explain these structural changes over time. Additionally, two samples of neighborhoods (Northeast and Southeast) within the city were selected as the basis for comparing the structural changes. The data developed from the 1970 and 1980 census of population and housing characteristics comprised the change in the median household income ratio, the change in the home value ratio, and the change in the median rent ratio designated as dependent variables. Nine independent variables representing the pre-existing conditions in the city at the start of the decade were selected from locational, demographic, and housing factors. The research hypotheses were tested by regresslng the three dependent variables against the nine independent variables resulting in three regression models for each sample. The a priori expectations as reflected by the signs of the coefficients show mixed support for the hypotheses in each sample in predicted direction, and in level of significance. In the city sample the neighborhood housing quality factor was observed to have a strong positive causal relationship with neighborhood revitalization. The outcome confirmed the contention that a significant and systematic reverse revival trend occurred in Portland at the start of the 1970 decade. This finding contradicts the conventional invasion-succession theory associated with Burgess (1925). Similar reverse revival trends were observed in the Northeast and Southeast samples. But unlike the city sample the race factor had a strong positive causal relationship with revitalization. The outcome may be a reflection of the rental squeeze in terms of housing affordability faced by black renters in both subareas because their incomes could not keep pace with housing costs. Consequently their demand for rental housing may have grown faster than the supply of the rental housing stock in a segregated rental market. The chow tests show significant structural differences between the two submodels, but the impact of the race factor as reflected by the measures of relative variability was greater in Northeast Portland than in Southeast Portland. In light of the research findings, this study concludes that Portland may undoubtedly be the only city in the nation that experienced a significant and systematic revival trend between 1970 and 1980. However, this trend did not extend to the predominantly black areas of the city as reflected by the strong negative outcome of the race factor. In addition, the functional significance of the systematic revival trend in Portland may not be substantial when compared to larger and older cities like St. Louis and New Orleans that received media attention for a similar trend. In addition, the efficiency of the system is greatly reduced by the formation of porphyrin:viologen association complexes. Knowledge of the values of these constants may allow selection of appropriate porphyrin:viologen concentration ratios which would enable optimization of these systems when used in such applications as artificial photosynthesis. This study reports the effect of selected salts and solvents on the porphyrin spectrum and the spectrum of the H₂TCPP⁴⁻ dimer. Moreover, we define experimental conditions appropriate to the study of porphyrin:viologen association and report association constants calculated at both constant ionic strength and constant buffer concentration. The spectrophotometric titration of tetrakis(pcarboxyphenyl) porphine (H₂TCPP⁴⁻) with either methyl viologen (MV²⁺) or propylviologen sulfonate (PVS⁰) results in the formation of H₂TCPP⁴⁻ :viologen complexes with stoichiometries of both 1:1 and 1:2. In addition, at high viologen concentration, PVS⁰ induces H₂TCPP⁴⁻ dimerization. Association constants for the titration of H₂TCPP⁴⁻ with MV²⁺ were calculated using data obtained at constant ionic strength (I = 0.15, maintained with KH₂P0₄/NaKHP0₄) and at constant buffer concentration ([KH₂P0₄/NaKHP0₄] = 5 mM) using both nonlinear least-squares (NLLS) and principal component analysis (PCA). At constant buffer concentration the association constants calculated via NLLS analysis and PCA were found to be, respectively, 3,170 and 3,350 for the 1:1 complex and 100 and 68 for the 2:1 complex. At constant ionic strength the association constants were calculated by NLLS to be 594 for the 1:1 complex and 38 for the 2:1 complex. PCA was used to confirm our model of the solution equilibrium equations used to calculate the association constants by NLLS analysis. In addition, this method yields the spectral line shape and absorptivity of the spectroscopically unresolved 1:1 H₂TCPP⁴⁻:MV²⁺ complex. From this information it was learned that both the absorptivity and the wavelength dependence of H₂TCPP⁴⁻ and the viologen complexes of H₂TCPP⁴⁻ were a function of the alkali metal cation concentration (higher concentrations of cations result in progressively weakened and blue-shifted spectra). Finally, we will present data which support the conclusion of Firman et al. that the spectrum of the H₂TCPP⁴⁻ dimer is weakened and blueshifted by approximately 10 nm relative to the porphyrin monomer in aqueous solution. We will further show that some organic ions induce H₂TCPP⁴⁻ dimerization and some do not; moreover, we will present experimental evidence demonstrating that the data cannot be explained as a simple effect of the ionic strength. Mitchell of the Medical School of the University of British Columbia and co-workers. Frullanolide was isolated from Frullania tamarisci by J.D. Connoly and by G. Oisson and his co-workers. The plant sample, collected in Oregon, was hand separated, confirmed, air dried and milled before the extractions were done. A Soxhlet extraction with ether and cold extractions with n-hexane and with ether were carried out. Ether is a better extraction solvent than n-hexane for cold extraction. Column chromatography was used for the separation of the extract based on gradient elution from silica gel or aluminum oxide. Non-polar hydro-carbon sesquiterpenes and other hydrocarbons usually were eluted first. Frullanolide then was eluted. Studies by thin layer chromatography on silica gel showed that none of the fractions was a pure component; therefore, further separations were done by thin layer chromatography and small-scale column chromatography. However, no satisfactory separation systems were found, except that frullanolide was isolated from the silica gel plate with cyclohexanel/ethyl acetate 80/20, Rf' = 25.8, which was very close to the reported value. An infrared spectrum of this was taken and used as supporting evidence. An infrared spectrum of the first fraction from an aluminum oxide column showed that this was a reasonably pure fraction of hydrocarbons. By gas chromatography, eleven components were found in this fraction, and the percentage of the major component was calculated to be 97% by weight. Nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectra showed an exo-double bond with a 6-membered ring or larger. (I.R. : 3080 cm-1 ,1643 cm-1 ,888 cm-1, NMR δ 4.73) This fraction was then studied by means of a gas chr0matography-mass spectrometer, and the molecular weight of the main component of this fraction was 204. Kovats’ indices of the main component were taken by co-injection with 0-cedrene and ᵝ-bourbonene; these data, however, did not match any of the compounds listed. Infrared analysis of the other fractions from the columns and from thin layer chromatography showed the presence of carbonyl groups. One of the carbonyl groups absorbed at about 1770 cm-1, characteristic of a y -lactone.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: A historical analysis of the traditional Japanese decision-making process in contrast with the U.S. system and implications for intercultural deliberations Author: Mitarai, Shoji Year: 1976 The purpose of this research.is to (1) describe and analyze the different methods used by Japanese and by U.S. persons to reach agreement in small group deliberations, (2) discover the depth of commitment and personal involvement with these methods by tracing their historical beginnings and (3) draw implications from (1) and (2) as to probability of success of current problem solving deliberations involving members of both groups. In the Yayoi period of Japanese history (250 B.C. - 300 A.D.), a special set of circumstances in both the ecological and cultural sphere encouraged the consensus type of decision-making and commensurate cultural norms to develop among the inhabitants of the Japanese archipelago. Following the Yayoi by some 300 years was the Nara period of Prince Shotoku who attempted to reform and modernize Japan by bringing in many cultural attainments such as the Chinese writing system, some of the grammatical features of Korean Language, and religious philosophies of India. Western influence after World War II did not greatly modify the deeply embedded patterns of thought, ethos, behavior, communication and decision-making basis. Two selected elements of the Japanese culture are analyzed: (1) a system of hierarchy which encompasses the sense of discipline, benevolence, self-depreciation, nonverbal behavior (use of the bow) and verbal behavior and (2) need for harmony which includes vagueness of language, advatism or use of intuition (awareness of other's needs and feeling via nonverbal cues) and the humane sensibility. These two elements still permeate today's' Japanese society and affect communication styles. There is a description of both the traditional consensus method of reaching agreement which emphasizes non-verbal aspects and the modern day method which encourages the verbal communication. In either case, the guiding spirit of decision-making is harmony and the goal is almost entirely directed toward cooperation. The cultural elements deeply entrenched in Japanese history provide this system of decision making. The American dialectic method of reaching agreement, on the contrary, places a high value on personal contributions, convictions, arguments and achievements. Conflict is a direct result of the American method and is considered to be desirable as well as necessary in order to reach a good conclusion. By the same token, disagreement occurs more frequently. This means that in an intercultural setting a great deal of miscommunication may be occurring. Under what conditions will critical incidents be likely to occur when the two negotiating groups encounter is hypothesized. The American method is contrasted with Japanese method and it was found that they are strikingly different and achieve different specific goals. Year: 2011 Numerous small alpine glaciers occupy the high elevation regions of the central and southern Sierra Nevada, California. An inventory based on 1:24,000 topographic maps revealed 1719 glaciers and perennial snowfields for a total area of 39.15 +/- 0.13 km(2). The number of 'true' glaciers, versus non-moving ice, is estimated to be 122 covering 14.89 +/- 0.08 km(2) or 38% of the ice-covered area. Historic photographs, geologic evidence, and field mapping were used to determine the magnitude of area change over the past century at 14 glaciers. The area change between 1903 and 2004 ranged from -31% to -78%, averaging -55%. Based on these values rough estimates of volume change suggest an ice volume loss from 1903 (1.09 km(3)) to 2004 (0.43 km(3)) of 0.66 km(3) (0.59 km(3) water). Rapid retreat occurred over the first half of the 20th century beginning in the 1920s and continued through the 1960s after which recession ceased by the early 1980s and some glaciers advanced. Since the late 1980s glaciers resumed retreat with a rapid acceleration starting in the early 2000s. The relatively uniform timing of area changes in the study glaciers is a response to regional climate whereas the magnitude of change is influenced by local topographic effects. Area changes correlate significantly with changes in summer and winter air temperatures. Warmer winter temperatures warm the snowpack lengthening the summer melt season. Spring air temperatures and precipitation may also play an important role. The occurrence of spring snowfall can delay the onset of melt due to the increased surface albedo. Examining the influence of topographic variables we only found headwall height at the top of the glacier to show an influence on glacier change. Higher headwalls shadow the glacier from solar radiation reducing melt and enhancing snow accumulation via avalanching. If the glaciers continue to shrink at current (1972-2004) rates, most will disappear in 50-250 years. The relatively uniform timing of area changes in the study glaciers is a response to regional climate whereas the magnitude of change is influenced by local topographic effects. Area changes correlate significantly with changes in summer and winter air temperatures. Warmer winter temperatures warm the snowpack lengthening the summer melt season. Spring air temperatures and precipitation may also play an important role. The occurrence of spring snowfall can delay the onset of melt due to the increased surface albedo. Examining the influence of topographic variables we only found headwall height at the top of the glacier to show an influence on glacier change. Higher headwalls shadow the glacier from solar radiation reducing melt and enhancing snow accumulation via avalanching. If the glaciers continue to shrink at current (1972-2004) rates, most will disappear in 50-250 years. Close

Based on these efforts, a two stage experiment was developed in the Oregon State University (OSU) high-fidelity driving simulator to investigate the causal factors of right-hook crashes at signalized intersections with a striped bike lane and no right-turn lane, and to then identify and evaluate alternative design treatments that could mitigate the occurrence of right-hook crashes. This research investigated whether "interactive effects" are important in conceptualizing and understanding the family's etiological role. The concept of interaction is based upon the assumption that variables may not have causal efficacy within themselves, entirely independent of other variables. Variable interaction occurs when the effect of an independent variable varies depending on the value of another independent variable. This study utilized questionnaire data gathered as a part of the Richmond Youth Study by the Survey Research Center (University of California, Berkeley) in 1965. The original stratified random sample consisted of 5,545 junior and senior high school students. While this sample included both male and female, black and nonblack adolescents, the present analysis focused on the 1,588 nonblack subsample. Survey data was available on a wide variety of youth-related issues, including self-reported delinquent activity and family conditions. This study analyzed the interactive effects of five family dimensions in relation to four other causal variables commonly associated with delinquency involvement: community social disorganization delinquent friends, attachment to peers, and delinquent definitions. Analysis of variance, a multivariate statistical model, was used to distinguish significant independent and interactive effects. Identified interactive effects were then examined through tabular analysis in order to provide a more precise understanding of how these variables interact in affecting delinquency involvement. Finally, the general notions of variable interaction which are implied by existing theories were assessed. The data analysis revealed that family factors influenced delinquency in different ways. The level of an adolescent's attachment to father was found to be independently related to delinquent activity after controlling for all other effects (independent and interactive). Paternal discipline had an interactive effect on delinquency such that the type of paternal discipline influenced the effect that community social disorganization and number of delinquent friends had on delinquency; in turn, paternal discipline was significantly related to delinquency involvement under certain conditions of these same variables. The other three family factors, however, did not have a significant independent or interactive effect on delinquency involvement. These findings suggest that causal explanation and research dealing solely with direct, independent effects may minimize and oversimplify the causal role of certain family factors. The hydro-geomorphic response to major flood has implications for system management and aquatic life. Studying hydro-geomorphic change requires a systematic approach. Here, I define flows and flood hydrographs for specified return interval based on the observed hydrologic record, and then examine potential hydro-geomorphic changes using a numerical model. A Pearson Type III distribution is used to calculate 100, 75, 50, 25, 10, and 2 year return periods. Extreme event hydrographs are derived by fitting derived and observed flood hydrographs to the gamma distribution curve. Sediment transport and geomorphology are then modeled numerically with Nays2DH, a solver that is part of iRIC software. Because the model is computationally intensive, I model the domain with five different spatial grid resolutions, to find proper grid resolution. The grid resolutions used are 1.5 m, 2 m, 3 m, 4 m, and 5 m. We choose 4 m as optimum grid resolution, based on the convergence of model results. The model is run for extreme event hydrographs with six above return periods. For result visualization and analysis, we focus on flow properties and bed elevation at peak flow and at the end of each event. For both times for each event, important flow and sediment transport parameters are visualized for the entire domain in plane form and eight cross-sections at 200 m intervals. Finally, we divide the geomorphic response into areas of erosion and deposition. Linear regression analyses of mean values of erosion and deposition at peak flow for all extreme events yield R2 of 0.981 for erosion and 0.986 for deposition. The mean erosion and deposition depth at the end of the events is modeled by nonlinear regression with correlation coefficient of 0.965 for erosion and 0.998 for deposition. The regression models provide direct understanding of impacts of different floods on the geomorphic response of the river domain. examination of the model as a whole suggest that the amount of erosion and deposition in the bed and banks is a function of channel geometry, bank and bed geology, riparian area condition and strongly depend on the amount of flow through the channel.
