Gaza was the southernmost and strongest of five Royal Cities of Philistines. It has been made famous by the exploits of Samson. Tradition points out a place on the southwest side of the town toward the left of the picture as the place where stood the gates of the Philistine city which Samson carried off (Judges 16). It is claimed by some that this is the hill whither Samson carried the gates. Gaza is about 100 feet high and stands in the midst of orchards. There is an abundance of figs, dates and olives. The soil is irrigated by well water and yields abundantly. Gaza is very closely connected with Old Testament history, being mentioned in almost every book. It was a town even before the call of Abraham, and now is the largest city close to the seacoast in Palestine. In the conquest of Joshua the territory of Gaza is mentioned as one which he was not able to subdue (Josh. 15:47). But it apparently continued through the times of Samuel, Saul, and David to be a Philistine city. While Australia is a very dry continent having but a limited rainfall, no high mountains, and consequently no large river systems; New Zealand is comparatively a moist county, requiring little or no irrigation for its crops. The Wanganut River in North Island is famed for its beauty. For the greater part of 140 miles it runs in a deep canyon, which it has cut through hardened volcanic ash to a depth of form 200 to 500 feet. The walls of the canyon are in many places almost perpendicular and everywhere they are very steep. Both sides are covered with rich green vegetation, conspicuous amongst which are tree ferns, rising in some instances to a height of fifty (50) feet, and bearing aloft surprisingly graceful umbrella-shaped fronds.   	Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Inundation of the Nile Year: 1900 The great Nile dam, at the head of the first cataract of the Nile, is 600 miles above Cairo. The dam was built 1898 - 1902 by the Egyptian government for irrigation, the water being utilized for that purpose between May and July, when the river is at its lowest and before the annual inundation begins in the middle of July. The dam is 1-1/4 miles across and is built of Assuan granite laid in Portland cement. On the dam are 180 sluices which have a capacity of emitting 15,000 tons of water per second. It holds 1,000,000,000 cubic meters of water. The dam is filled with the muddy flood coming down from the mountains, and opens again when the Nile is low. As the water lies in the dam, the mud sinks; but as the outlets are along the bottom, when the water goes out it carries the mud with it, and thus distributes it through the canals to farm after farm. The dam has now a maximum height of 130 feet, and at the base is 100 feet thick and 30 feet at the top. The summer rains in Abyssinia raises the level of the Nile in a great flood, the crest of the wave arriving in lower Egypt in October. As soon as the water recedes the grain is planted in the rich soil. The homes are built on the highest land beyond reach of the water. With the exception of the palm tree and the fringe vegetation along the river, there is an absence of the abundant plant life of the regions having suffered sufficient rainfall.
