  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Steelhead Habitat Surveys in Mill Creek Monitoring Project Completion Report (OWEB #205-125) Abstract -- This project added to the existing information about steelhead in Mill Creek in the following ways: • Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife completed an instream habitat inventory from the mouth to the forks, up the South Fork to Mill Creek Falls, where anadromy ends, and up the North Fork for the first 7,370 meters. • Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife conducted steelhead redd surveys in the mainstem and South Fork in 2005 and 2006, while the US Forest Service conducted redd surveys in the federally-owned upper reaches of the North Fork. • Wasco County Soil and Water Conservation District installed depth and temperature monitors on the mainstem and North Fork, while relying on the City of The Dalles to monitor flows in the South Fork. The 148 acre lake is within the Willamette National Forest at an elevation of 3,012 feet. Clear Lake is biologically unusual. Although the underwater trees are not petrified, decomposition has been very slow because of the _low level of biological activity in the water. Biological activity is confined mainly to benthic algae in the northern end of the lake and to planktonic diatoms (primarily "Asterionella" and "Fragilaria") in the southern portion. Cutthroat trout is apparently the only indigenous salmonid species in Clear Lake. A 1922 Forest Service report describes Fish Lake and Hackleman Creek as being the most important spawning and juvenile rearing habitat for Clear Lake trout. Several smaller lakes also drain into Tenmile Creek below the large lakes. The lakes originally contained excellent populations of coho salmon and cutthroat trout. However, these species declined with the development of large populations of warm water fish including largemouth bass, bluegill, yellow perch, and brown bullhead. Management problems in the lakes today concern continued reduction of salmonid populations and high abundance of bluegill. Largemouth bass appear incapable of fully utilizing bluegill as forage. As a result, the Department has considered introducing additional predator species to provide fishing diversity and to better utilize bluegill.
