Thumbing White Man for dropping in on US/U.S.; PH036_4847 Year: 1903 Three Native American men, identified as Young Chief, Whirlwind, and Chief No-shirt, are mounted on dark-colored horses on a plain in front of four tipis. Each man carries a staff with ermine, eagle feathers, or other decoration, and Young Chief holds a second, shorter staff with long fringe. All wear headdresses with ermine hanging down, and eagle feather trails, and two have horned headdresses. The men wear beaded moccasins and beaded pants. One wears a cloth vest, one a cloth shirt, and one a buckskin shirt. The pants of two men are visible and seem to be cloth with strips of geometric beading. The horses have beaded bridles, martingales, masks, and reins, and Young Chief's horse shook its head as the photo was taken. Chief No-shirt's horse has a striped saddle blanket; the saddle has a long strip of fur hanging down from the saddle horn, nearly to the ground. All men wear jewelry. The canvas entry of the tipi is tied back and the woman stands with her feet inside, slightly leaning out. Her long dark hair hangs below her waist in two braids; she wears a choker necklace, and a rounded earring is visible. She wears a long dark cloth wing dress with wide sections of lighter beading that run across the bodice and shoulders and onto the sleeves. A longer sleeve of floral material from a shirt or underdress is visible as she holds up her left hand. His arms are crossed on his lap; with his right hand he holds a feather up to the left side of his face. His long unbound hair hangs over his chest. He is wearing a white cloth under-shirt and appears to also be wearing a dark one; over all is a dark cloth shirt or jacket. What looks like a rabbit's foot hangs from a thong around his neck. The house has gingerbread-style trim, with a lacy crest interrupted by finials running around the top of its small flat porch roof and the edge of the roof line, and delicate crenelation along the roof ridge with a finial at the gable above the porch. More gingerbread ornaments the gable. During the twentieth century, Saginaw was an important manufacturing town, but manufacturing and the automotive industry declined and by the end of the century unemployment, poverty and crime, including gang activity had created an urban blight. This book is a photographic essay on the once attractive neighborhoods of Saganaw which are now largely burnt out and boarded up. Issued in folded chip-board case with velcro closure and the title stamped on the upper flap. The book is bound with post and screw in an album style. Covers are made of plywood, pages contain color photographs printed with acid free inks on Janus Duo Card paper. Page edges are hand burned. Text is digitally printed using Franklin Gothic. The title is burned into wood cover. Includes a map of the Saginaw neighborhood where the photos were shot. The artist writes: "The genesis of this book was a drive my husband and I took about three years ago while visiting friends in Detroit. In a two mile stretch of road, near tony Grosse Pointe, we saw so many burned out or boarded up houses that the area looked like it had been bombed. We were shocked and saddened to see this urban wasteland. An artist book was born on this trip as the images haunted me for three years while I waited for the chance to go back and shoot the photographs. After some research I discovered that what we saw that day was not unusual. Detroit's infamous battle with Devils' Night arson has left the city ravaged. But, what shocked me most was that I found the same kind of blight in my own home town of Saginaw, located 100 miles north of Detroit. Finally, three years after seeing these houses in Detroit the artist book I had in mind became even more personal and more important to complete."; This book is a limited-edition hand-bound artist book. Original photographs, poetry and text by Laura Russell. Digital printing with archival inks on archival paper. Flyleaves are stained Tyvek. Interior pages burned by hand. The Integrated Scientific Assessment for Ecosystem Management for the Interior Columbia Basin links landscape, aquatic, terrestrial, social, and economic characterizations to describe biophysical and social systems. Integration was achieved through a framework built around six goals for ecosystem management and three different views of the future. These goals are: maintain evolutionary and ecological processes; manage for multiple ecological domains and evolutionary timeframes; maintain viable populations of native and desired non-native species; encourage social and economic resiliency; manage for places with definable values; and, manage to maintain a variety of ecosystem goods, services, and conditions that society wants. Ratings of relative ecological integrity and socioeconomic resiliency were used to make broad statements about ecosystem conditions in the Basin. Currently in the Basin high integrity and resiliency are found on 16 and 20 percent of the area, respectively. Low integrity and resiliency are found on 60 and 68 percent of the area. Different approaches to management can alter the risks to the assets of people living in the Basin and to the ecosystem itself. Continuation of current management leads to increasing risks while management approaches focusing on reserves or restoration result in trends that mostly stabilize or reduce risks. Even where ecological integrity is projected to improve with the application of active management, population increases and the pressures of expanding demands on resources may cause increasing trends in risk.
