At the bottom in white ink is written "No. 698 Foot trail bridge at Wah-kee-na Falls. Columbia Highway Ore." The leafy branches of a tree form a frame of the view to the left of the photo. Beyond, the white blur of the waterfall rushes down the cliff and continues as a creek under the arched stone bridge in the foreground. About eight women and men, and two boys, stand along the bridge gazing at the waterfall. The men and women all wear hats, and the men wear suits. The women wear ankle-length dresses. Off to the side of the waterfall stand two men, a woman, and a child, similarly garbed and also looking towards the water. The paddlewheel of the large stern wheeler to the left of the photo can be clearly seen. This ship is much larger than the other two at right, and has been identified as the "Bailey Gatzert". One of the other steamers has been identified as the "Charles R. Spencer". Their smokestacks all belch smoke. In the river some small islands can be seen. On the further shore, a low, well-forested riverbank with a settlement of houses rises to wooded hills. To the center right of the picture the locks are seen. The Cascade Locks were completed in 1896, and submerged in 1938 as a result of the construction of the Bonneville Dam. In the foreground on the left side of the photo are log pilings and what looks like a water wheel or some sort of scaffolding on the side of a building. On the river and partly obscured by the pilings is a man in a rowboat. He seems to be regarding the cigar-shaped ocean-going log raft being pulled by a tugboat. There are chains holding the log raft together, running across the logs every few feet. White smoke or steam streams from the tug's smokestack. Another tug is approaching. To the right of the tugs is a log cradle where the rafts are formed. On the beach are what look like log buildings, with red roofs. At the far end of the buildings tall light-colored pilings are standing. Behind them and all along the shore is a lush forest. He wears a hat with a rounded crown and wide brim, a light shirt and jacket, sturdy pants and shoes. A painter on his right leads from the bow to the left edge of the photo. He holds a slim pole longer than he is tall. At the right of the rowboat in the water is a dark rock, and the oars are laid so the handles are in the boat and the flat ends rest on top of the rock. Lying in the water at the man's feet is a sturgeon. The fish is almost half as long as the boat. In the background stretches the river, with forested hills above the banks.
