The latter figure carries a re-curve bow and seems to be aiming at the large goat on the other side of the section. He was the first son of John Adams. His public career began, when at the age of fourteen, he served as Secretary to the American minister to Russia. He was his father's secretary in 1783, when the Peace of Paris was negotiated. In 1788 he was graduated at Harvard College, and shortly afterward began the practice of law. At different times he was minister to Holland, Prussia, Russia and England. In 1807 he supported Jefferson's embargo, and thus broke with the Federalist Party. He was one of the Peace Commissioners at Ghent, and Monroe made him Secretary of State. After the expiration of his presidential term, he was elected, in 1830, to the House of Representatives, and served in that body for seventeen years. He died at the Capitol, at Washington, 1848. He served with distinction in the Medican War and, when Oregon became a Territory, was appointed by the President as Governor of the new Territory. He in company with Joseph Meek, who was appointed Marshal for Oregon, set out overland to take over the duties of his new office. They arrived in Oregon City, March 2, 1849 and on the following day began his work as governor. He later served as Delegate to Congress until Oregon was made a state and was one of the state's first members in the United States Senate. He died at his home in Roseburg, Oreg, in 1881 at the age of 80.
