Dept. of Geology and Mineral Industries The plate tectonic history of Oregon is but one piece of a worldwide jigsaw puzzle encompassing much of geologic time. With the splitting of Pangaea in Mesozoic times, Oregon has occupied the leading edge of the North American Plate as it has impinged upon the ancestral oceanic East Pacific Plate. In the process Oregon has undergone profound subduction type tectonism. In addition, it may have acquired much lithospheric material from other plates, possibly some of the Paleozoic rocks of the Klamaths from Asia, ultramafic rocks and volcanic rocks from the Triassic oceanic crust, and the Siletz River Volcanics from the Eocene deep-sea floor. In middle Tertiary times, Oregon, along with the rest of western North America, actually caught up with the East Pacific Rise, an event which profoundly altered the pattern of tectonic behavior within the state. Flood basalts and block faulting replaced andesitic volcanism and thrust faulting as the dominant mode of tectonism. The pattern of deformation in late Tertiary times is extremely complex and a plate tectonic model consistent with all the data has yet to be formulated. The seismic history of Oregon is too short to be used as an accurate predictor of earthquake size, number, and distribution. Continual monitoring of earthquakes by seismograph stations during the next several decades should provide a more accurate estimate of the seismicity of Oregon. To provide adequate and accurate coverage additional seismograph stations are needed, particularly in southeastern Oregon. Rapid urbanization of the Willamette Valley and extensive public works planned for other areas of Oregon make it imperative that the stabilities of the areas be known. Specialized equipment such as portable microearthquake seismometer arrays, which have been developed to assist in local immediate problems, can accurately map active fault zones. In addition, they can locate active zones of continuing deformation which exist without producing the larger release of elastic strain energy of felt earthquakes. Studies of both historical and concurrent seismicity of an area should be of paramount importance when considering potential sites for nuclear generating stations or large construction projects such as dams, airports, large office buildings, and housing developments. Dept. of Geology and Mineral Industries When you drive through the Madras region on U.S. Highway 97, you see a gently rolling plain dotted with low hills and flat-topped buttes. Since the plain appears to extend westward uninterruptedly to the foothills of the Cascade Range, little would you imagine that between you and the mountains lurk three awesome canyons, totally invisible until you nearly reach the brink. Three rivers -- the Deschutes, the Crooked, and the Metolius - have cut these gashes into the plain and have laid open for observation a sequence of remarkable geologic events. The place where the three rivers join to make one canyon marks the general location of the Cove Palisades State Park. Cove Palisades State Park encompasses Round Butte Dam and its reservoir, Lake Billy Chinook. The 7,000-acre park features picnicking, camping, and boating facilities on the shore of the lake and scenic viewpoints on the canyon rims. The park is an excellent place to see 10 million years of geologic history. The purpose of this report is to present the geologic background of the park area in a nontechnical way (assisted by a short glossary of terms), and then to outline a geologic motor tour of the park by means of descriptive text, photographs, cross sections, and maps. The self-conducted tour starts at Madras, makes 12 designated stops, and ends on the far side of the park in the canyon of the Deschutes River, a total distance of about 25 miles.
