Most begin by consulting leading technology authorities, borrowing elements of their thinking, and adapting these elements to their organizational and personal situations. This dissertation extends this process by using the formal research methodology of multiple perspectives (technical, organizational, personal, and cross-cuing) to build a case-based model of the technology integration process. The research and the model construction benefits from a solid foundation established through a review of technology management and knowledge systems literature. The significant aspects of the research are tied to its objectives which can be divided into academic and industrial classifications: Academic Objectives: 1. Use multiple perspectives in real-time (for input to decisions as events unfold) 2. Focus on a multiple perspectives view of technology integration into an organization Industrial Objectives: 1. Improve project effectiveness by increasing understanding of the technology integration process 2. Establish a model for the integration of a new technology into an organization The development of the case-based model was the primary objective, with the other objectives providing the methodology and subject-matter content to support model development. These four objectives are of interest to three parties: scholars who are interested in the theoretical and methodological aspects of technology integration and inquiring systems, technology developers in general who can benefit from improved means to integrate technology and analyze success/failure, and technology developers in information systems organizations who can obtain specific insight as well as utilize the general industrial results. From the multiple perspectives investigation, thirteen conclusions were reached about the process of integrating knowledge systems into an information systems organization. These conclusions are specific to the case study, but may have general applicability. The multiple perspectives methodology is then presented as the foundation for a technology integration model, on which the technology usage phases of awareness, motivation, and functioning capability can be completed. The model is described and then illustrated with two knowledge systems development project cases. With regards to the research objectives, it is concluded that: 1. The use of multiple perspectives in real-time are difficult and requires practice 2. Because technology integration is dependent upon technical, organization, and personal factors, the use of multiple perspectives are appropriate and useful. Eight of 13 conclusions were dependent upon the cross-cuing process 3. Multiple perspective analysis improved the understanding of the technology integration process. This understanding was sometimes helpful and sometimes harmful to the effectiveness of the integration process 4. An eco-district is the next generation in green building design and expands the idea of a single building to an entire urban region. One of the key issues with eco-districts is the idea of net-zero energy, which is the requirement that the district must produce as much green energy as it uses. Since eco-districts encompass a larger geographic area, there are more options available in the design, location, sizing and financing for a green energy system. The question posed in this project is whether it is more cost effective to have multiple systems spread across multiple small sites (such as roof tops) or have a few large systems located on a single large open site. The LP model for this project looked at minimizing cost while still achieving the system size goals set by the demand load of the model. The district that was evaluated was a modified version of the PSU Eco District. The district area was modified to include two large open site options, but fewer buildings. Data for the model was collected from a number of sources, including area and location information from Google Earth and pricing information from accepted industry costing estimate guides. The LP model was developed using the Excel Solver program. The results of the project were interesting. A first pass analysis of the results showed that the smaller sites were the more cost effective design scenario. But further analysis of the numbers showed that the high cost of the large site was due mostly to the interconnect cost required because the site was located farther away from the point of usage than the smaller sites. This result emphasized the importance of both district selection criteria, as well as the financial advantages of using existing utility transmission infrastructure instead of developing new infrastructure for the district. There are future add-ons that could be done as a continuation of this project. The biggest is a more advanced financial model that includes not only more detailed costing design scenarios, but also includes some of the tax and grant incentives associated with green energy. What should be the target market for proposed design concepts? Who will be the competitors and how fast are they moving forward in terms of performance improvements? Ultimately, is the current design concept and targeted launch date feasible and competitive? To answer these questions, there is a need to integrate the product benchmarking with the assessment of performance improvement so that analysts can have a risk measure for their R&D target setting practices. Consequently, this study presents how time series benchmarking analysis can be used to assist scheduling new product releases. Specifically, the proposed model attempts to estimate the "auspicious" time by which proposed design concepts will be available as competitive products by taking into account the rate of performance improvement expected in a target segment. The empirical illustration of commercial airplane development has shown that this new method provides valuable information such as dominating designs, distinct segments, and the potential rate of performance improvement, which can be utilized in the early stage of new product development. In particular, six dominant airplanes are identified with corresponding local RoCs and, inter alia, technological advancement toward long-range and wide-body airplanes represents very competitive segments of the market with rapid changes. The resulting individualized RoCs are able to estimate the arrivals of four different design concepts, which is consistent with what has happened since 2007 in commercial airplane industry. In addition, the case study of the Exascale supercomputer development is presented to demonstrate the predictive use of the new method. The results indicate that the current development target of 2020 might entail technical risks considering the rate of change emphasizing power efficiency observed in the past. It is forecasted that either a Cray-built hybrid system using Intel processors or an IBM-built Blue Gene architecture system using PowerPC processors will likely achieve the goal between early 2021 and late 2022. This indicates that the challenge to improve the power efficiency by a factor of 23 would require the maximum delay of 4 years to reach the Exascale supercomputer compared to the existing performance curve. None of the team members knew each other previous to the start of this class. The selection process was influenced by several factors. These factors included proximity in class when the teams were formed, appearance and chance. Once we had committed to forming a team it became apparent that scheduling team meetings would be a significant problem. Jason and Noah's work schedules were polar opposites and both team members had limited free time. A quick discussion of how we would work around this issue set the tone for the rest of the semester. There was no drama, just a recognition that face to face meetings would be the exception and that we would have to work as a virtual team with each member taking responsibility for a section of the assignments. These same busy schedules that limited face time also forced the team to make efficient use of its resources. Team decisions were made quickly with the discussions focused on what issues needed to be addressed and how we could efficiently provide a solution. With limited interaction outside of class most of the teams initial bonding took place while walking from class. Despite busy schedules, two face to face team meetings were held during the semester. The first meetings effectiveness was limited when one team member missed a text message on the meetings location and another had to deal with personnel emergency. Fortunately this meeting was not typical of the team's character and did not set the tone for future performance. The second team meeting was much more successful with all members sharing information regarding their backgrounds and anecdotal stories as well as developing a plan for our class work. While the interpersonal aspect of this meeting generally would fit the forming stage the focus of the meeting was working developing a plan to complete the teams research paper. This fit well with Tuckman's storming stage of team development. Similarly, the transition to the Norming Stage was not clear cut. There were signs of Norming behavior from the teams initial meetings. Significantly the team members took responsibility to make major team decisions independently. Duygu, who during many of the meetings was more reserved, brought up that she felt we had chosen the wrong research project. This was a significant team performance milestone for several reasons. Most importantly is showed that although we were in a Norming phase and working efficiently , team members could voice dissenting opinions. This indicted to me that there was significant trust within the team. As the end of the semester approached the team easily entered the performing stage. When the final report was due, tasks were quickly divided up and team members did what was needed to meet the deadline. Governments participate in collaboration in order to meet their country's policy goals. Scientists and researchers establish their contacts through their personal channels or scientific networks in order to pursue their own academic interest. There are two significant approaches in ICST Policy making which are "top-down" and "bottom-up" approaches. Both approaches are important. One approach can not fit all. Each approach has its own advantages and disadvantages. A balance between these two approaches is necessary. The objective of this research is to develop a strategic policy model for international collaboration in science and technology to bridge the gap between "top-down" and "bottom-up" approaches. A strategic policy model was developed in which the characteristics of ICST proposals and expert judgments are quantified to determine the relative importance the country's international S&T vision and objectives and specific sectors, and to evaluate the proposals accordingly. Four international evaluation criteria are proposed in this research: strategic importance (SI), potential impact (PI), human resource development (HRD), and matching fund from international partners (MF). Each proposal is evaluated with respect to each criterion and related sub-criteria. The value of each ICST proposal is then calculated by incorporating all of the elements at each level of the model. The output of this model is the ranking of the ICST proposals coming from the "bottom-up" approach that satisfy the national priorities and organizational requirements represented by the "top-down" approach. The model facilitates the national policymakers to make better decisions about participating in ICST research, and the researchers to have a better understanding of the entire international scientific collaboration system by identifying research opportunities to fit in. The incorporation of such technology into vast existing utility infrastructures offers many advantages, including possibilities for new smart appliances, energy management systems, better integration of renewable energy, value added services, and new business models, both for supply- and demand-side management. Smart grid also replaces aging utility technologies that are becoming increasingly unreliable, as the average ages for many critical components in utility systems now exceed their original design lives. However, while smart grid offers the promise of revolutionizing utility delivery systems, many questions remain about how such systems can be rolled out at the state, regional, and national levels. Many unique regulatory and market structure challenges exist, which makes it critical to pick the right technology for the right situation and to employ it in the right manner. Technology Roadmapping may be a valuable approach for helping to understand factors that could affect smart grid technology and product development, as well as key business, policy and regulatory drivers. As emerging smart grid technologies are developed and the fledgling industry matures, a critical issue will be understanding how the combination of industry drivers impact one another, what barriers exist to achieving the benefits of smart grid technologies, and how to prioritize R&D and acquisition efforts. Since the planning of power grids often relies on regional factors, it will also be important investigate linkages between smart grid deployment and regional planning goals. This can be used to develop strategies for overcoming barriers and achieving the benefits of this promising new technology. The banking and the financial services sector has advanced from traditional banking services to internet-based banking. In recent times, banks and financial services firms have developed software solutions such as, ATM locator, Mobile banking and others which makes it easier and convenient for the user to have access to the bank without ever walking into the banking hall. The general adoption of mobile banking solutions worldwide is still not that encouraging. There are several drivers which affect the adoption of these internet-based banking solutions, such as socio-economic factors, mobile device adoption, and user behavior to name a few. The present project focuses on enumerating the key factors for user adoption of mobile banking solutions. The factors are then grouped into multiple perspectives and prioritized using the Hierarchical Decision Model (HDM). The results are ranked, discussed and then appropriate suggestions and conclusions are drawn. Our results show that all the factors are important but reliability and privacy are the most important factors that banks should pay much attention to during design and development of mobile banking solutions. We conclude that if a bank pays attention to providing a solution that meets the user’s reliability expectation, then the privacy risk can be further minimized since the user might have more confidence that their information will also be handled in the right way, which will not compromise their privacy. The structure of the report starts from idea generation and simple methodology to select our team product. Then we follow the step shown on the syllabus. We do more investigation to understand more about our technology product and its competitors, its value proposition and its expected target market. After defining the target market, we followed the marketing plan outline by Luther, William (the Marketing Plan 3rd edition). This book provided us guideline for development of the following sections; marketing objectives and strategies, product plan, marketing communications plan, research plan, and the Internet plan. Our team decided to skip customer service plan, sales management plan, action plan, but added financial plan instant. Also, to be a value research log for other students who will take this class in the future, we added key learning and suggestion at the end of each section. We wish that our team research log will be a guideline for other students to improve or develop their marketing plan based on our learning curve. In fact, two of his models, the Five Forces model (Porter, 2008), and the Three Generic Strategies model (Porter, 2000, 2005), are widely referenced and serve as bedrock for discussions of strategy and policy in many college textbooks today. However, industries and approaches to strategy have evolved significantly over the last 30 years. Key factors driving this change include: globalization of markets (products, resources, and labor), rapid and wide‐spread access to information, faster product cycles, increasing research and development costs, and more informed buyers. Based on these changes, and current trends “in industry” to be more “market” or “marketing” oriented, we will explore whether Porter’s Three Generic Strategies model can still be an effective tool for strategic planning or whether there is a more effective alternatives. In particular, the Strategic Marketing Model, developed by Cendix, has been used successfully to develop strategy for operating companies in dynamic operating environments. This paper will address the strengths and weaknesses of both models and judge the effectiveness for each as a problem solving tool.
