In this project, team 4 investigated a known challenge related to big data; big data projects have high failure percentage, causing firms to lose time, money, and resources in futile efforts to gain advantages from big data insights and analytics. In this project, the reasons behind big data projects failure were explored. Leading to the development of an HDM model that can be used by firms to evaluate readiness to implement this kind of projects, and highlight/address probable causes of failure before the project even start. Hence, increasing the chances of implementing a successful project that will lead to a big data system that can deliver value to firm and provide insights and analytics that will significantly help in addressing the problem it is built to help solve. The model was evaluated by experts from the industry, and then tested against a hypothetical case, in which Portland State University readiness to implement a big data project to address a main problem facing the university was conducted. Finally, a discussion about the results of the model, experts’ evaluation, and case study were offered. Often, strategies are set though polices that govern the firm’s products and services, how it positions itself to compete, the choice of scope and diversity to compete, as well as the administration polices used to define and coordinate work. Two prevailing economic theories that help explain how an economic phenomenon affects economic competition are Schumpeterian and Kirznerian. Both theories attempt to explain entrepreneurship and its effect on the economy. Firms that are able to learn and exploit technological opportunities before their competitors position themselves with a competitive position, while reaping the profits. The theory of Absorptive Capacity is predicated on the firm’s ability to predict more accurately the nature of technological advances through the accumulation of the firm’s knowledge by recognizing the value of new external information, assimilating it, and exploiting it commercially. Health care sector is one of the most important sectors for any country for two reasons; first, because it is related to people health and their live and the second reason is because of its high cost for both developed and developing countries. According to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Office of the Actuary, National Health Statistics Group; U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis; and U.S. Bureau of the Census U.S. the national health spending in 2011 was just over $2,700 billions. This was about 17.9% of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which was $15,076 billions [1]. The national health expenditure will keep increasing and according to a study done by the center for Medicare and Medicaid services it will reach $4,638 billions by the end of 2020 and that about 20% of the U.S. GDP that will be $17,775 billions by the same year [1] We can see form all of that data that health care expenditure will keep increasing and we have to take some advantages of Telemedicine applications that reduce the cost of healthcare in long term. Also, Telemedicine has many advantages in reducing the medical errors, and saving time for both patients and physicians. From table-1 bellow we can see the U.S. population keep increasing year by year and during the last decade it increased from 282 million in 2000 to 311 million in 2011, which is more than 9%. And from the same table we can see how the healthcare expenditures increased almost the double in the last thirty years ago from 9.2% in 1980 to 17.9% in 2011. TA advocates for the engagement of technology experts and stakeholders to understand the effects of technology. However, TA is often criticized that the decision-making process is not transparent - leaving stakeholders wondering if their contributions were heard. Furthermore, the methods have limited capability for conducting tradeoff analysis between the organizational objectives and conflicting stakeholder perspectives that can result in unintended consequences. Finally, these methods are static making it difficult to update and reassess decision alternatives when new information about issues becomes available. This dissertation research addresses these problems by developing a new technology assessment methodology using Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (Fuzzy Cognitive TA - FCTA). This novel approach supports both stages of the process: capturing expert and stakeholder perspectives in cognitive maps, and then using FCM for assessment and decision-making. The methodology shows how experts and stakeholders perceive the value or harm of a technology alternative, which stakeholders share the same perspectives, and how these perspectives change over time. The methodology also shows the degree to which expert and stakeholder perspectives are in support or in conflict with the organizational objectives to help avoid the direct and indirect consequences associated with the decision. Finally, the methodology shows how new or changing perspectives by experts and stakeholders affect the outcome of the decision to improve system knowledge. The research applies the FCTA methodology with a real-world Environmental Impact Study conducted by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). BPA is a U.S. federal agency that provides about a third of the electric power and 75 percent of the high-voltage electric transmission in the Pacific Northwest. Of the above mentioned options Electric Vehicles are widely popular (trending) in the current vehicle purchase market. In this report an attempt has been made to explore both lease and buy options and make a recommendation as to which one would be a better alternative for the consumer in said vehicle. The results of economic analysis show that, it is generally better to lease the vehicle at lower APR and when the lease period is shorter. On the other hand, it is better to buy the vehicle at a higher APR than to lease it, since leasing will make one pay almost as high in interest as the one buying the vehicle. It was also shown that since the market fluctuation for used vehicles is uncertain, it is more risky to buy the vehicle if one intends to use it for a shorter period, since vehicles generally depreciate quicker in the first few years -­‐ being able to sell it for an anticipated market value might be difficult. The key to success is molding ourselves and our environment to positively enhance the success rate. Teams are often diverse, and that’s where the challenges lie, our team was also a uniquely diverse team, six different people, six different cultures, six different languages, six different countries, six different backgrounds, six different religions and six different attitudes. When we first met, the only thing we shared in common was the “Communication and Team Building class”. The ten weeks took us through a “roller coaster” ride, where we shared our fear, anticipation, joy, screams, laughter and emerged as a strongly bonded victorious team that achieved its primary goal. The journey from “group of strangers” to a “high performing team”, was emotional and an incredible learning experience unparalleled in its academic and experience value. Ziyad, Jubin, Dinesh, Dong-Joon, Ryan and Pinprapa are the six characters in this amazing “Harry Potter and the School of Wizardry” story. In the following pages, we have tried to express in words, the four different stages our team went through and evolved as a self-sustaining family. As you read, you will see an amazing story unfold, and grasp the spirit of Team-Building and Team work through our eyes and experiences. Average selling prices (ASP) tend to be low due to customer price pressure and competition. One of the largest costs associated with manufacturing ICs is the subsequent test cost. The test time for complex chips is approaching 50% of total package-device cost.[1] This is broken down into hardware utilization time and man-hours. The more time that is spent testing one product means less time is available for testing other products. Getting capital expenditures approval to buy more test equipment is generally a hard sell, and even if approved the long lead times prove to be not convenient for alleviating test bottlenecks. One of the best ways to improve test costs is to reduce the test time per unit. Faster unit testing allows the existing hardware to test more products given the same amount of time. The first place to investigate potential savings is to start at the functional level. Semiconductor companies produce an electrical table highlighting the specifications of the part. The industry standard is to break down these specifications into three categories: minimum, maximum, and typical values. The readers and the intended audience of the development log can be anybody who is willing to know about choosing a technology in developing a Travel Beverage Heater. The problem that was not currently addressed by various other technologies and products was to heat the drink anywhere and at anytime. The current technologies that are used to heat the drink are not safer which could cause burns and hurt the customers, not easy to carry, not compact, some chemical based products have also caused injuries to the customers and were not eco friendly. Hence, to address these needs we have developed a product through our thorough research and analysis. The scope of the development log report doesn’t cover much in depth about the circuit design or in depth product specifications. It discusses about various possible technologies in high level that can be used such as chemical based, Butane fuel based and finally battery power based technology which could heat the drink. Hence, having a some prior knowledge about these chemicals and technologies would help to better understand the product but it is not mandatory. The methodology adopted was finding market opportunity through gap analysis of the competitors’ products which were customer complaints unaddressed by the other products which lead to the initiation of idea of developing a product which could heat the drink that is light, easy to use and safe to carry. Further we considered various potential customer segments that may be willing to buy this product, followed by selecting a potential target segment who were parents having babies and on further interviewing we found the customer needs and then interpreted the needs. The technology was selected based on interviewing the Mothers who have babies which was finally found to be battery based and later we used needs-metrics matrix to come up with product specifications. Final stage of developing the product was product design which was found to be spiral type design after evaluating various other designs. Finally, we calculated product development economics which includes unit production cost, net present value and break even analysis. The development log report starts with product development process which includes product planning and concept development, followed by design phase, product development economics, lessons learned and follow on research.
