It is widely accepted that companies’ ability to effectively manage its Research and Development (R&D) investments and portfolio in order to deliver value through technological innovation is a key determinant of its market success and competitive advantage [13]. With globalization, Companies’ have a broader access to information and markets which have resulted in amplifying the need for technological innovation in order to succeed over the long term [11]. Although companies have access to and use tools to measure quantitative aspect of the business especially on the input side of innovation, it has been proven much more challenge to measure the qualitative aspect of innovation. Technology managers and leaders need methodological assessment tools in order to decide among the active technologically innovative projects in their organization. This paper focuses on technologically innovative projects where R&D managers are not able to directly leverage knowledge from past project successes and failures. The objective of this project is to develop a decision model based on Mission, Objectives, Goals and Activities (MOGSA) model developed by Dr. Kocaoglu and his team [18] in order to enable the management to relatively rank various projects in their R&D Portfolio. Using the relative rank from the decision model, R&D managers are able to determine appropriate funding allocation; in some cases resulting in termination of one or more projects with lower future potential in order to provide additional funding for more promising projects. The present study discusses, what are the problems for the current automotive technologies are, what requirements are outlined in the literatures and government guidelines/publications, considering different aspects of technological needs, public needs, policy measures etc. A set of criteria are developed, which cover multiple perspectives; reflecting the diverse stakeholders in the technology assessment, acquisition and adoption, in this case the government, the general public which includes drivers and pedestrians, automobile manufacturers. Three emerging technologies (Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication, Vehicle-to- Infrastructure and Full autonomous) were identified and evaluated based on the mentioned criteria using Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), a multi criteria decision tool. Since the technologies are still being developed and some are barely emerging, it is considered appropriate to use speculative values from the publications from industry and other credible sources and consider multiple scenarios each of which could occur. In our case, we considered 9 main scenarios and evaluated the three technology candidates under each of them. In this framework we utilized this powerful tool to measure the pace of the next hybrid PC generations. The main catalyst behind this study is attempting to answer the question of why PC sales have shrunk recently. We started conducting our research by applying the macroeconomics forces at the macro scale to have a clear vision of the exerted forces on PC industry—namely the impact of tablets, Ultrabook, laptops, and smartphones on PCs. Accordingly, we conducted an intensive literature review followed by a survey to understand the trends of PC industry as well as the end users’ needs. Based on the knowledge extracted from the literature and the survey, we constructed the Technology Roadmap of the next hybrid PC generations. The developed roadmap— consisted of drivers, products, technology, and resources—empowered us to evaluate the current state of PC industry and revealed technological gaps implicitly. We believe the technological gaps discovered by this framework, will help any hypothetical manufacturer pioneer in the PC industry to cope up with the dynamic of PC market for the next five years. Author: Iskin, Ibrahim Year: 2014 Energy efficiency stands out with its potential to address a number of challenges that today's electric utilities face, including increasing and changing electricity demand, shrinking operating capacity, and decreasing system reliability and flexibility. Being the least cost and least risky alternative, the share of energy efficiency programs in utilities' energy portfolios has been on the rise since the 1980s, and their increasing importance is expected to continue in the future. Despite holding great promise, the ability to determine and invest in only the most promising program alternatives plays a key role in the successful use of energy efficiency as a utility-wide resource. This issue becomes even more significant considering the availability of a vast number of potential energy efficiency programs, the rapidly changing business environment, and the existence of multiple stakeholders. This dissertation introduces hierarchical decision modeling as the framework for energy efficiency program planning in electric utilities. The model focuses on the assessment of emerging energy efficiency programs and proposes to bridge the gap between technology screening and cost/benefit evaluation practices. This approach is expected to identify emerging technology alternatives which have the highest potential to pass cost/benefit ratio testing procedures and contribute to the effectiveness of decision practices in energy efficiency program planning. The model also incorporates rank order analysis and sensitivity analysis for testing the robustness of results from different stakeholder perspectives and future uncertainties in an attempt to enable more informed decision-making practices. The model was applied to the case of 13 high priority emerging energy efficiency program alternatives identified in the Pacific Northwest, U.S.A. The results of this study reveal that energy savings potential is the most important program management consideration in selecting emerging energy efficiency programs. Market dissemination potential and program development and implementation potential are the second and third most important, whereas ancillary benefits potential is the least important program management consideration. The results imply that program value considerations, comprised of energy savings potential and ancillary benefits potential; and program feasibility considerations, comprised of program development and implementation potential and market dissemination potential, have almost equal impacts on assessment of emerging energy efficiency programs. Considering the overwhelming number of value-focused studies and the few feasibility-focused studies in the literature, this finding clearly shows that feasibility-focused studies are greatly understudied. The hierarchical decision model developed in this dissertation is generalizable. Thus, other utilities or power systems can adopt the research steps employed in this study as guidelines and conduct similar assessment studies on emerging energy efficiency programs of their interest.
