Year: 2001 Indigenous knowledge (creation of human well-being with a modicum of Earth resources) in India was augmented in the twentieth century with new technologies. The new technologies have raised Indian well-being, but these improvements has been insufficient to motivate Indians to choose families small enough to achieve human sustainability. Fortunately, within India a stable population (29 million) currently meets the criteria for human sustainability -- modest per capita taking of Earth resources combined with small families. The one significant difference in the indigenous knowledge of Kerala contrasted to India is central to the human experience, family structure. We may identify weak patriarchy versus strong patriarchy. The fact that the rapid increases in the well-being measures of Kerala have occurred in the last half of the twentieth century suggests a strong synergy of the new technologies (especially public education and western medicine) with the weak patriarchy in the Kerala part of India. Within the low Indian incomes and low per capita consumption of Earth resources, the high well-being measures of Kerala have been sufficient to cause a rapid decline in total fertility rates to a sustainable level, lower than in North America. The low consumption of Earth resources in Kerala can be viewed as a benchmark for sustainability -- efficient human consumption. This efficiency benchmark is found in the weak patriarchy of Kerala within the strong patriarchy India -- a contrast of indigenous knowledge. The study was conducted in the Pacific Northwest by researchers at Oregon State University and focuses on scientists involved in the Long Term Ecological Research Program (LTER). Using data from interviews and mail-out surveys, the paper describes and compares the attitudes of two groups, scientists and natural resource managers, regarding preferred scientist roles, advocacy by scientists, and factors affecting the credibility of scientists. Two models about these roles are considered: a traditional model that separates scientists from resource decision-making and an emerging model that integrates them into resource management. Survey results indicate that scientists and resource managers favor the second model: both groups strongly support research scientists becoming more involved in management, though neither group prefers advocacy of particular management choices by research scientists. Moreover, while scientists and managers differ about the most important factors that affect the credibility of scientists, study results suggest that the credibility of research scientists in management will depend in part on their ability to communicate with non-scientific audiences, a factor highly valued by managers but not by scientists. Finally, the authors conclude that the results support Kai Lee’s concept of civic science, in which research scientists assume a more activist, integrated role in adaptive environmental management. Contribution of the sector to the nation's economy can be increased if challenges in the industry are minimized and the opportunities explored. Large scale aquaculture, an economic activity earning people a living is a very important industry encompassing fish traders, fish processors, fish farmers etc. The sector supports many Nigerians directly and indirectly. However fish importation is much more in quantity and value. 80% of aquaculture production in Nigeria is manned by small-scale farmers, except for few commercial ventures. Nigeria is blessed with numerous opportunities for large-scale aquaculture; however the challenges seem to override these opportunities. Constraints to production in the industry have been identified as recurrent high cost fish feed, poor water quality management, poor quality fish seed, technical know-how etc. Beyond the constraints to production are more pertinent factors responsible for un-sustainability of fish farm operation as business ventures. This paper focuses on the investment opportunities in large scale aquaculture and the current challenges that the farmers are facing in Nigeria. The paper shows that unprofitable operation of fish farms in Nigeria could be broadly attributed to two factors: poor production planning and inadequate technical know-how. The paper recommends the need to commercialize the industry through broad government fiscal efforts and sectorial re-organization in Nigeria. The fishery supports a major artisanal fishery in the country, ranking second to the Nile perch in Tanzania. However, the dagaa fishery is associated with high level of post-harvest loss (physical and quality losses) approximately 59%. The overall objective of this study was to propose cost effective management strategy to reduce dagaa post-harvest loss in Tanzania. To meet this objective a cost and benefit analysis was done, to determine whether adopting drying dagaa on racks project will reduce post-harvest loss, and hold positive public value in the future. Two categories of analysis were set i.e. private (individual) and public (Government) for a pilot district (500 fishers), the analyses were divided into five parts: 1). Assessment of all possible dagaa post-harvest losses, 2). Assessment of the cost of reducing the losses, 3). Assessment of the anticipated benefits associated with reducing the losses, 4). Evaluation of costs and benefits to determine net benefit and NPV, 5). A sensitivity analysis. From the analysis it was found that, drying racks project has positive NPV therefore it is worthwhile to be implemented in Tanzania to reduce dagaa post-harvest loss. Also sensitivity analysis indicated that NPV is sensitive and is likely to be affected by changes in sales price, while changes in investment and implementation cost were found to have no impact on NPV. By using drying racks productivity will be increased and provide sustainable livelihood to fishers and as well as increase regional trade and foreign exchange earnings to the government.
