Year: 1974 Early in the fall of 1973, the Oregon Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) decided to sponsor a statewide training project in cooperation with seven chapters in other Department of Health, Education and Welfare (DHEW) regions across the United States. These workshops were to comprise Stage I of a two-stage plan; they were to serve as demonstration projects. Their planning, implementation and evaluation were to be seriously reviewed and studied afterword in an attempt to devise a model, or models, for Stage II, when a great number of such workshops would be held across the nation. The training plan ensued as part of a contract between NASW and the Health Resource Administration of DHEW, and was entitled Project Provide. The purpose of the contract was to train social work designees and consultants who are employed in Long Term Care Facilities (LTCF). The objective of the training was to initiate and/or improve appropriate social services to reduce the unmet social and human needs of residents and their families. There are three major aims of the study. The first is to measure variances in morale states as experienced and reported by the respondents. The second aim is to determine how a given set of factors correlate with the self-reported morale of each of the respondents. Selected for consideration are 1) attitudes: expectations upon entering the home and choice, comparison of one’s self-assessed age and health status with that of others, feelings of financial and physical security, feelings of happiness vis a vis their life’s course; 2) activities: enjoyment of solitary activities, i.e. reading, writing, television, and radio, participation in group activities such as games, crafts, movies, and discussion groups, and visits outside the home; and 3) interpersonal relationships: interaction with peers, the presence or absence of friendships, the frequency of visitors, satisfaction with family relationships, and anticipation of events and contacts with others. The third aim of the study is to identify from the above information, points and strategies for social work intervention. Year: 2010 This monograph’s contribution to knowledge was two-fold: 1) reliable measures of the quality of childcare as perceived and assessed by the parents themselves; and 2) discovery that the quality of the care chosen by working parents depends upon the amount of flexibility they can muster from their immediate environment at work, at home, or from accommodating childcare providers. It doesn’t matter which source of flexibility works best for them. It’s the flexibility that allows optimum choice. The findings suggest that public policy should recognize the vast diversity of parental choices and the flexibility needed to improve their choices. That means improving workplace flexibility, strengthening the financial capacity of families, and protecting all of the wellsprings of flexibility for employed parents. Many U.S. cities now have plans to end homelessness. Yet homelessness and housing instability are substantial problems that afflict a diverse group of subpopulations such as families, youth, veterans, and chronically homeless single adults. Ending homelessness for each of these populations may require tailored interventions that are responsive to specific individualized needs. These factors make tackling homelessness a difficult task. Although evidencebased solutions exist for some subpopulations, such as housing first for chronically homeless adults, scaling up best practices remains a challenge. For other subpopulations, such as transitional aged youth, evidence-based interventions need to be developed. In this paper we argue that ending homelessness is a Grand Challenge that is big, important, and compelling—one that the profession of social work should be adopt. Meeting this challenge will require a focused, organized response from social work researchers, clinicians, and policymakers. Ending homelessness will require innovation and interdisciplinary or cross-sector collaboration.
