Two are wearing caps, while one wears what looks like a knitted cap. Two of the men wear overalls; all have long sleeves and pants and wear shoes. In the middle ground of the photo are the falls, and two wooden structures, one of which may be a wooden fish wheel. Hills rise up in the background. On the back of the photo is written in pencil "The Vista House at Crown Point on the Columbia River Highway near Portland, Oregon". The curves of the two-lane highway lead up to the scenic overlook of Vista House, an octagonal stone building with a copper dome roof, constructed between 1916 and 1918 as a rest stop and a memorial to early pioneers. The view is up the Columbia River to the east during autumn or winter. We see partly-forested hills and mountains, the river and its banks, and far away snow on some mountains. In the foreground of the photo are bare-branched trees, evergreens, and telephone poles lining the road. A white wooden fence follows along part of the roadway. There seems to be some kind of building along the road leading up to Vista House, obscured behind the big evergreen in the foreground. Towards the right corner of the photo it looks as though an automobile is parked in the grass. The tipi is made of canvas and grass mats, and there is a small broom and pile of material next to it. To the right of the tipi, on the ground, is a stack of wooden tipi poles and a pile of folded mats. To the far right of the photo are the indications of where a second tipi used to be. The sky is full of clouds and the photo appears to have been taken at dusk.
