Don and Traute Moore purchased the original 13 acres of Quail Run Vineyards in 1989. They began experimenting with varietals and expanded over the years to 10 vineyards totaling 280 acres in several diverse micro-climates of the Rogue Valley. Quail Run produces over 20 varietals, most of which go to make award-winning wines produced by Willamette Valley wineries. The Moore established an estate label, South Stage Cellars with a 2006 Merlot and expanded to 7 varietals the following year, all custom made by Joe Dobbs of Dundee, Oregon. The South Stage Cellars tasting room opened in 2008 in an 1865 stone building in the historic town of Jacksonville. About 25 wines are available to taste, many bearing labels from wineries to the north, but all made from the Moores’ grapes. They began with dozens of varieties and planted test blocks around the valley to see what grew best and where.  With more than eleven distinct vineyards ranging in elevations and each with highly trained crews, Quail Run now grows more than 29 varieties of premium wine grapes for over thirty Oregon wineries.  In 2010 Don and Traute Moore were awarded the prestigious Founder’s Award by the Oregon Winegrowers Association for pioneering work in establishing Southern Oregon’s now booming wine industry. Michael Moore, Don and Traute’s son, has managed the vineyards since 2008. The Moore’s produce estate wines under the South Stage Cellars label and opened a Jacksonville, Oregon tasting room under the same name in 2008.
