Using catch data collected by collaborating Oregon troll fishermen, we investigated the distribution of individual populations of Chinook salmon along the nearshore regions of the Oregon Coast. The study focused on two distinct spatial scales: 1) the coast-wide, latitudinal distribution of the 13 most abundant stocks that contributed to the Oregon catch in 2007, and 2) stock-based patterns of Chinook aggregation on spatial scales as low as tens to hundreds of meters. The description of spatial distribution was performed over time periods as short as two days and in season-long summaries. Based on 2007 catch data, we report three separate patterns in the coastal distribution of Oregon-caught Chinook. Stocks from the Sacramento River, Mid-Oregon Coast and Upper Columbia basin were distributed coast-wide in the Oregon catch. Chinook salmon that originated from northern California and southern Oregon were found to be more abundant south of 44° North – the approximate latitude of the coastal town of Florence, Oregon. Stocks from the north Oregon coast and the lower Columbia basin were primarily taken north of 44° North. We describe in-season and annual changes in the relative contribution of discrete stocks and in the age-structure of these stocks. Using distance-based metrics compared to random permutations, we found evidence from the ocean catch that Chinook salmon were sometimes closely proximate to river cohorts at sea. However, these discreet stocks were generally intermingled with other stocks in mixed-stock aggregations. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss management and rehabilitation actions in developed areas that could improve watershed functions, aquatic habitats, and salmonid populations. This workshop was designed to follow up and expand on key findings from IMST’s 2010 report titled Urban and Rural-residential Land Uses: Their role in Watershed Health and the Rehabilitation of Oregon’s Wild Salmonids Workshop invitees, representing municipal, county, and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, and universities, were selected to reflect experience in managing, monitoring,and/or rehabilitating salmonid and aquatic habitats in urban and rural-residential areas. Invitees were also chosen to represent the varied geographic areas in Oregon.The findings from the workshop are intended to help the State of Oregon and local governments better understand the technical issues regarding, and impediments to implementing, plans for minimizing development impacts on water quality, watershed hydrology, and aquatic ecosystems. Low concentrations of dissolved copper have been shown to adversely affect the olfactory system of endangered salmonids, impairing their ability to avoid predators and likely increasing predation. It is believed that only the free ionic (Cu2+ free) and weakly complexed forms are bioavailable to organisms; these forms typically account for a small fraction of the total dissolved copper. To determine the threat of copper to salmonids, the speciation of copper in aqueous environments is essential. Copper speciation has been examined in freshwater, seawater, estuaries, and rainwater. However, no such studies have focused on stormwater, a major source of dissolved copper in natural water bodies. To bridge this gap in knowledge, competitive ligand exchange – adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLEACSV) techniques developed for seawater were adapted to stormwater. CLE-ACSV is unique among speciation techniques in that it allows the characterization of the ligands in the system as well as free copper concentrations. Major alterations of seawater CLE-ACSV techniques include the shift to a lower pH (6.80) and the addition of an electrolyte to increase solution ionic strength to 0.05M. The results of this research show that free copper concentrations at the monitored sites ranges from 10−13.49 to 10−6.74 M. Additionally, free copper concentrations are best correlated with dissolved copper and hardness levels. Ligand concentrations correlate with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) measurements and (along with copper-ligand stability constants) vary widely within and between sites. With the ebb and flow of population and the economic growth of Oregon coastal communities, three hypotheses have been generated about the ability of these communities to meet future water supply needs. The purpose of this project was to better understand the challenges and opportunities facing coastal community water suppliers as a whole and to ultimately improve the prospects for meeting future water needs. Findings show that contrary to the first hypothesis, most of those interviewed do not think that economic development is constrained by waters supply. However, it does appear that it would be difficult for state economic development officials to match businesses and industries interested in relocating to the Oregon coast with community water supply availability and reliability. Findings also show that the major problem facing community water suppliers in preparing water management and conservation plans cited by interviewees is financial. Though Oregon’s coastal communities face several planning, management, physical, economic, and regulatory challenges in preparing for future water supply needs, numerous partnership, conservation, and research and training opportunities exist. What is needed is an opportunity for a facilitated process of restructuring water supply systems.
