However, curriculum to prepare students who will be working with these technologies as developers and planners has not developed at the same rate. The goal of this project was to develop a college course focused around sensors and smart transportation to be offered to undergrad and graduate students at the University of Oregon. The class focused on the practical application and the theoretical consequences of these developments. The class was offered in the spring term of 2015 to a group of undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of backgrounds. An overview of the class is offered here, and course documents are included as appendices so that other educators could use them as a starting point for developing such classes. Under this grant, three applications have been developed for three distinctly different user groups. The first, JLA Involve, was developed and deployed for JLA, a Portland, OR.-based public involvement firm, to support their work with the City of Tualatin, OR., in updating their Transportation System Plan (TSP). The second was developed and deployed for the City of Eugene, OR., and allows citizens to submit bike-lane service requests directly to the City’s internal Work Ticket (MMS) system for quickly responding to and resolving requests. The third application, Make It So, was developed and deployed by University of Oregon (UO) transportation researcher Marc Schlossberg, and makes generalized mobile survey instruments available to other transportation researchers around the world through Apple’s App Store. All are utilizing Esri’s API for iOS or Android to maximize the potential for recipients of mobilegenerated data to incorporate it directly into their existing spatial data management/GIS systems and workflows. The cost of building and maintaining a current and accurate GIS database can be substantial within any given organization. For some smaller level organizations—small counties, cities or special districts, the cost of gathering data, organizing it and implementing systems within expensive software on an expensive operating platform can be downright discouraging. Also, as more complex data structures are accumulated a window for more comprehensive modeling and analysis of regional issues is opened. Each of these trends alone provide ample incentive to develop data standards that can be applied to all systems to facilitate data sharing between organizations for system development, system update, or project specific purposes. Taken together these trends provide an imperative to develop data-sharing standards. A series of macro-oriented logic models and micro-focused data collection tools have been developed over this time in order to understand this healthy communities issue, as well as operationalize the hypotheses around the connection between the built environment and physical activity. None of these efforts, however, attempt to connect their assessment frameworks and tools with a public involvement process. The last ten years has also seen the development of a concentration of work known as Public Participation GIS (PPGIS), which aims to combine the spatial sophistication of GIS with expanded public access to the tools and data linked with GIS technology. This project advances this area of research and technology transfer in two ways. First, four new built environment audit tools using Mobile GIS technology have been developed with a focus on a community approach toward data gathering and usage. These tools include the School Environment Assessment Tool (SEAT), the Complete Streets Assessment Tool (CSAT), the Accessibility Audit Tool (AAT), and the Bicycle Assessment & Safety Index Tool (BASIT). Secondly, these tools have been tested with several communities across the country and have include non-technical, general members of the public interested in healthy communities and active transportation. The tools have been refined after each community workshop and two of the tools, SEAT and CSAT, are ready for a more robust national distribution. We emphasize that the need to investigate the potential and practicality of GIS technologies in a typical planning setting and evaluate its possible applications. GIS may not be necessary (or useful) for every planning application, and we anticipate these readings to provide the necessary foundation for discerning its appropriate use. Therefore, this textbook attempts to facilitate spatial thinking focusing more on open-ended planning questions, which require judgment and exploration, while developing the analytical capacity for understanding a variety of local and regional planning challenges. While this textbook provides the background for understanding the concepts in GIS as applicable to urban and regional planning, it is best when accompanied by a hands-on tutorial, which will enable readers to develop an in-depth understanding of the specific planning applications of GIS. Chapters in this text book are either composed by the editors using Creative Common materials, or linked to a book chapter scanned copy in the library reserve. The objectives of this thesis were to develop tools to study and characterize landscapes and to interface with a geographic information system (GIS), to evaluate landscape indices, and to examine development of forest cutting patterns under different cutting methods and explore alternative forest management strategies. A computer program was developed for simulation and analysis of landscape patterns. The primary applications of the computer program were (1) to quantify spatial patterns of landscapes, (2) to perform experiments with different silvicultural strategies and forecast the consequences of management activities, (3) to examine the behavior of landscape indices without having a large number of landscape samples, (4) to interface with and to complement GIS in terms of ecological analysis, and (5) to serve as a base on which GIS-related landscape models could built. Many extant landscape indices were reviewed, and some new indices proposed. Each was evaluated in terms of its ability to distinguish four test synthetic landscapes with distinct spatial patterns. Fractal dimension, patchiness index, dispersal index, and two fragmentation indices (i.e., the forest interior area and the largest forest patch size) appeared to be most sensitive to spatial variations among the test landscape mosaics, and may be most useful to study and quantify the landscape pattern. On the other hand, some commonly-used landscape indices, contagion and dominance, could not distinguish variations in distinct landscape patterns. The simulation program and the landscape indices were then used to study landscape patterns generated by different forest cutting methods. The results indicated that different cutting designs may produce landscapes with distinct characteristics. Landscapes were clearly less fragmented when larger sizes of cut-units were used. When a stream system was included in the landscape structure, the behavior of many landscape characteristics changed. The results suggested that simple landscape models (i.e., the checkerboard model and random model) may lead to misleading interpretations of landscape patterns. Ultimately, this term refers to the quality of life within one’s community and the ease, comfort, and joy with which one can access places he or she want to go. For most Americans, their neighborhoods have been designed to predominantly accommodate the automobile, and more active forms of transportation such as walking and biking have been neglected. Previous and current OTREC work has developed a suite of GIS tools focused on assessing these environments in a fine-scaled, field-based, geo-referenced format so that local communities can better identify gaps in their networks and work to make appropriate improvements.
