We argue that individual purchasers’ preferences for suppliers depend on three broad classes of variables: (1) The structure of the value chain stage in which the firm competes, (2) the firm’s competitive strategy and (3) individual level work experience from the fisheries and other sectors. Structure is related to preferences because a highly transparent market with many homogeneous suppliers forces buyers to emphasize prize over other supplier selection criteria. Competitive strategy is believed to exert influence on preferences because strategy defines areas in which the firm has to outperform its competitors. As competitive advantage partly stems from an adaptation of suppliers, strategically important areas translate into criteria for supplier selection. A purchaser’s experience from work within or outside this sector is partly stored as cognitive structures that are used for making decisions and interpretation of information in complex and ambiguous environments. Present use of criteria for selecting suppliers, thus, partly reflects such experiences, in particular what has led to goal achievement in the past. A set of supplier selection criteria was identified based on a literature review and a qualitative prestudy. A set of theory-driven hypotheses are tested using data from a sample of respondents from UK, Spain and France (n = 99). Data were obtained from both traditional coast based importers-wholesalers and regionally based wholesalers. A conjoint approach was used in order to measure relative importance of supplier selection criteria at the individual purchaser level. Substantial support was found for a relationship between the three sets of variables and perceived relative importance of supplier selection criteria. Various traditional methods are employed to preserve and process Rastrineobola argentea locally known as dagaa (sardines) an indigenous fish species of Lake Victoria. The widely used known customarily dagaa and dagaa products preservation methods include sundrying, smoking, salting and various combinations of these. The advantages of smoking dagaa are manifold. Fish smoking prolong shelf life, enhances flavour and increases acceptability and utilization of dagaa. Customarily traditional dagaa processing techniques used by fishers for example sun drying dagaa direct on the unhygienic sand, rocks and or grasses significantly contribute to poor dagaa products. Awareness of the shortcomings of traditional ovens had stimulated development work on new and improved smoking ovens such as Chorkor oven and Nyegezi models ovens for various reasons. In the light of lessons learned from the constraints and disadvantages associated with earlier smoking techniques, an improved dagaa smoking oven, the modified Altona for hot smoking was introduced. Hot smoking means curing fish by smoking at a temperature of 70-80°C at some stage in the process in order to cook the flesh; hot smoked fish products do not require further cooking before consumption. Unlike other fishes, dagaa are readily available at cheaper price. However, smoked dagaa products have not been promoted in the country wide as well for the region and overseas markets. This may be contributed by the main middlemen traders for sun dried dagaa products who are not willing to opt to trade on smoked dagaa products at domestic markets. Because of the high quality of smoked dagaa compile the hygienic environment for storage and selling. This further enables hygienic handling during trading. If smoked dagaa and dagaa products are properly and hygienically handled extends shelf life. The quality of smoked fish is primarily linked to processing and post processing procedures. Although most of New Zealand’s fisheries’ value comes from mid to deep water stocks outside the Territorial Sea, there are a number of commercially valuable inshore fisheries. Traditionally, conflict between the two sectors has been resolved through spatial management tools. However since the introduction of individual transferable quotas in the commercial sector (1986), conflict between the sectors has increasingly shifted towards disputes over allocation of the Total Allowable Catch. The Fisheries Act 1996 current allocation process is discussed along with several cases where the High Court has provided advice on the allocation process The contrasting positions of the two sectors towards such an allocation process are discussed. Allocations would be difficult to define because the precision of recreational catch estimates is low, and secondly because there is no common basis for determining the relative value of the two fisheries. To provide a framework for understanding the nature of the New Zealand recreational and commercial fishery, the two sectors are compared using three characteristics; governance, institutions, and rights. The paper concludes with some principles which may provide guidance on reducing conflict between the two sectors. U.S. shrimp imports were valued at $2.6 billion in 1996. Together, domestic production and imports of raw products support a large shrimp processing sector, which provides several thousand jobs either directly or indirectly. In 1975 and 1984, the United States International Trade Commission investigated the shrimp industry to determine whether the volume of shrimp imports was high enough to threaten domestic firms which were producing articles similar to, or directly competitive with the imported products. In both studies, the commission concluded that no harm was done to the processing sector. However, an analysis of the shrimp processing sector revealed that imports did have a negative impact. The objective of this research is to examine the impact of shrimp processors performance (as measured by processor’s margins) on industry structure (as measured by the number of processing firms in activity) using a non-stationary Markov model. Results indicated significant margins changes on industry structure and size distribution. Specifically, the narrowing of processors’ margins due to increased shrimp imports impacted more the small size firms than the medium or large firms. Additionally, some shrimp processors (medium and large sizes) were able to remain in the industry by adjusting their input mixes.
