Despite their endangered status and the implementation in 1990 of Mexican laws prohibiting the harvest of sea turtles, the demand for and the supply of these animals has persisted to some degree. To determine the current demand for sea turtles 122 surveys and 56 interviews were conducted (June 12th-30th, 1999) throughout the Bahia Magdalena region. Through a generalized least squares (GLS) analysis it was estimated that 35.7% of the variation in demand was explained by six independent variables. The GLS model shows that the family size, special occasions of consumption such as birthdays, and the decline in sea turtle populations positively affect the demand function. The person's occupation, monthly income, and the 1990 ban on sea turtle harvest negatively affect this demand. Ninety-four surveys and seventy interviews conducted in the region (July 24th-August 1st, 1999) were used to describe a supply function. The GLS estimation indicates that 27.8% of the variation in the supply of sea turtles in the bay is influenced by nine variables. Age, level of education, fishing practices, number of dependents, availability of sea turtles, and culture significantly affect the supply of sea turtles in the Bahia Magdalena region. Such plans have been developed for the Australian Commonwealth fisheries (the most recent bycatch action plan extends from 2009 to 2011 for this case study). These plans list a wide variety of species, including both commercial fish and non-commercial species, particularly those listed as threatened, endangered or protected. The paper presents an analysis of the potential economic and ecological impacts of alternative approaches to the implementation of these plans, with particular emphasis on the use of economic incentives. The analysis is centered on the Australian Commonwealth Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery, and is based on the Atlantis simulation model developed within CSIRO. Atlantis is a spatially explicit model with subcomponents that model the coupled physical transport-biogeochemical processes as elements of the ecosystem, as well as sub-models to include the fisheries, the annual assessments, and the implementation of management regulations and compliance. A feature of the Atlantis model is that it incorporates a fleet dynamics model that allows the main fleets to adjust their fishing behavior in response to incentives. Incentive-based bycatch management scenarios such as the use of deemed values within the existing trade-able quota scheme for over-quota landings, or the imposition of a tax on catches of threatened, endangered and protected species, are considered (as well as tradable bycatch quotas). The consequences of these scenarios are presented in terms of both ecological and economic impacts, with a focus on the ecosystem-wide implications of alternative regulations. An assessment is made of how well current private and public sector decision-making in the United States utilizes knowledge from the social and biological sciences in management of the Columbia River fishery. The interdisciplinary concept of social capital is used to integrate knowledge from fishery biology, resource economics, and systems science. These species have different behavioral properties: sea scallops are sessile; yellowtail flounder are demersal with limited but unknown range. Herring and mackerel are pelagic species with wide spatial and temporal ranges; river herring are anadromous. Management actions also differed between the two fisheries. The sea scallop closed area fisheries were limited in time and space with hard quotas for each species. The herring and mackerel fishery was limited in large scale areas by hard quotas, without quotas for river herring. Fishermen were motivated to avoid river herring by strong conservation pressure, river herring are listed as a species of concern and under review for endangered species by the U.S. agencies, which designation would effectively close the Atlantic herring fishery. In the scallop fisheries, we mapped and updated densities for target and bycatch stocks through real-time monitoring and communicated hotspots with captains at sea. In the herring and mackerel fishery we identified densities through port sampling and communicated hotspots to captains at sea. We also reported environmental factors of river herring density such as depth to captains. Percent participation exceeded 75% in each fisheries with evidence of avoidance behavior in both fisheries. Yellowtail bycatch was sharply reduced in the scallop closed area fisheries with some reduction of river herring bycatch in the herring and mackerel fisheries. This swamp is one of international significance, since it is a home to the endangered animal, the manatee (Trichecus manatee). Also the swamp has a large population of two aquatic species of economic importance in Trinidad and Tobago - the armored cat-fish or cascadura (Hoplosternum littorale) and the ampulariid snail or black conch (Pomacea urceus). Residents of the area include in their diet the consumption of these species, as well as exploit them commercially. The paper is based on two surveys in the swamp, one was of 99 occupiers of plots, to determine their economic activities and the other survey was of 33 households, to determine the importance of fish from the swamp in their diets. The analysis in the paper showed that farming was now the dominant economic activity in the swamp, both in terms of income received as well as the amount of labor utilized. The residents did consume fish from the swamp, but this fish was not the major source of protein. Poultry and poultry products, especially chicken were the preferred protein sources. Farming was seen as a threat not only to fishing, but also to the native flora and fauna of the swamp and the paper called for urgent studies of the impact of such extensive farming on the ecology of the swamp. The paper addresses the conflict between the conservation of the formerly endangered species and professional fishermen whose livelihood is also regulated by fisheries management. We develop a bioeconomic model that accounts for the age-structure of Atlantic salmon and grey seal populations. In order to reach a social optimum, we maximize the discounted net present value taking into account the seal-induced losses through a damage function. The socially optimal salmon stock size, salmon catch and fishing effort is studied under different management schemes aimed at mitigating the seal-salmon conflict. The results suggest that technological adaptation would effectively reduce the cause of the conflict, while a technology subsidy encouraging such adaptation shifts the economic responsibility from individual fishermen towards a broader public.
