It drags special attention due to the absence of open access nature. The fishery is regulated by kattudel association stemming from the Catholic Church. In fact, the fishery has its own distinguished features. Hence, this study attempts to highlight some prospects and challenges veiled around kattudel fishery in Western and North - Western provinces of Sri Lanka. Usually, the kattudel lay towards the sea, 30 _ 40 m distance from the estuary in the lagoon. The targeted species are prawns, crabs, and lobsters. The fishery is benefited by the government with fishing equipment and credits by means of a gazette announcement. Younger generation_s hesitation to enter the fishery demarcates the major problem. At present, there_s only 4-6% involve with this fishery. The lower level of supply does not suffice the existing demand, which brings slightly higher prices than for other fishers. Moreover, they do not experience any marketing problems. The marketing chain has been intervened by Ceylon fisheries corporation in order to motivate and to offer the best price. The SWOT analysis reveals a vivid picture about the potentiality of the fishery. The kattudel association plays the key role for the sustenance of the fishery, even though it meets numerous bottle necks for development. Moreover, the fishery demonstrates sustainable strategies that would be valuable lessons for other fisheries as well. In fact, kattudel fishery is a fishing technique, which is on the door step of extinction with golden management tips towards sustainability, showing a high potential to success. Although the current situation of this small scale fishery could be considered as satisfactory, the viability of the fishery can be questioned. Indeed according to demographic scenarios, the growth of the population will generate an increase of local food demand and therefore growing fishing pressures. Moreover, there is no direct regulation for limiting the fishing catches. Models and quantitative methods to tackle this sustainability issue are still lacking for such mall-scale fisheries mainly because of the various complexities underlying the systems including the heterogeneity of the production factors, the weak selectivity of fleets and high fish biodiversity levels. In the present paper, we both use numerical simulations and a viability perspective to deal with such a problem. We first build a multi-species multi-fleets dynamic model relying on thirteen exploited species and four types of fleets. It accounts for potential trophic interactions, fishing effort and the corresponding costs and revenues. The model was fit on data collected since 2006 by Ifremer: daily production and efforts data, as well as economic data from a survey on the production costs and selling prices in 2009.The co-viability of the system under different scenarios of fishing efforts is studied through ecological and economic performances. The biological viability constraints focus on biodiversity index as species richness or trophic index while economic viability constraints intend to guarantee profitability to all the fleets. The changes by returning back to original points in order to connect and glue the traditional quintessences of fisheries management, to advanced management in foreign countries is a core in an argued approach as well as in reality of managing small - scale fishery in Thua Thien Hue- Viet Nam presently. Based on that, this report has introduced previous fishery management in Tam Giang lagoon based on traditional fishery villages, to research ways to reform the management of small scale fisheries based upon local fisher’s associations; outlined a scenarios for fishery management patters for future based on local community in Thua Thien Hue. The system expect to solve disputes in term of fishermen, fishing grounds and fishery resources. The report is a synthesized collection from researches of the author and relevant documents available. The findings show that fishery villages in Thua Thien Hue used to be successfully managed fishery resources through its own mechanism (regulations) and actively support of feudal authorities (a form of primary co-management) and practical experience derived from efforts to manage modern fishery. In Thua Thien Hue at present, the selectively inheritance of traditional values of fishery villages is one of potential ways in managing fishery in Tam Giang lagoon specifically. Annual flooding water and a rich level of aquatic resources strongly affect about 10 million local people, as well as extend beyond the boundaries of wetland itself. Flooding water and wild fish in it are considered common properties while physical and socio-economics conditions in the flooding water areas have changed very much during the last three decades. However, natural freshwater aquatic resources have rapidly depleted due to different reasons. Of which, the most important ones may be the construction of dense irrigation systems, property rights, policy and regulations, as well as livelihoods and perception of the local community. Major related issues are discussed in order to find out alternative solutions for a better use and management of aquatic resources in the freshwater areas of the Delta. Better management of fishing activities is suggested while aquaculture is considered as a major solution to compensate the fish losses as well as the most important solution in the restructure process of agricultural economy in the study area. In addition, an improvement of the linkage among different types of stakeholders is also required. The Ministry of Fisheries, as the manager of fisheries resources, must provide a balance between the interests of all New Zealanders and the rights of the indigenous people of Aotearoa/NZ, Maori, as provided under the Treaty of Waitangi 1840. As a case study this paper will examine the working relationship between the Ministry of Fisheries and Te Arawa that demonstrates when tools are provided either through legislation or kaitiakitanga (traditional and customary management practices) this allows for effective fisheries co-management to occur. The key issues for the case study are: " settlement of Te Arawa's historical Treaty of Waitangi claim for their lakes " promulgation of the Te Arawa Lakes Fisheries regulations " Providing mechanisms for Maori to have input and participation into fisheries management; " Ability for Maori to manage customary non-commercial harvest in their tribal area; " Commitment to a strong working relationship as partners; and " Provision of resources to enhance capacity for Maori to participate in fisheries management. This paper will also look at the process Te Arawa undertook to have the lakebeds returned, how legislative frameworks and policies are assisting Te Arawa to develop fisheries management. Addressing implementation of a co-management process for Te Arawa's taonga (treasured) species within the 14 lakes and how this has added value to relationship building for both partners.
