Year: 2001 Sea turtles have historically been a primary resource for many of the coastal inhabitants of Bahia Magdalena, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Despite their endangered status and the implementation in 1990 of Mexican laws prohibiting the harvest of sea turtles, the demand for and the supply of these animals has persisted to some degree. To determine the current demand for sea turtles 122 surveys and 56 interviews were conducted (June 12th-30th, 1999) throughout the Bahia Magdalena region. Through a generalized least squares (GLS) analysis it was estimated that 35.7% of the variation in demand was explained by six independent variables. The GLS model shows that the family size, special occasions of consumption such as birthdays, and the decline in sea turtle populations positively affect the demand function. The person's occupation, monthly income, and the 1990 ban on sea turtle harvest negatively affect this demand. Ninety-four surveys and seventy interviews conducted in the region (July 24th-August 1st, 1999) were used to describe a supply function. The GLS estimation indicates that 27.8% of the variation in the supply of sea turtles in the bay is influenced by nine variables. Age, level of education, fishing practices, number of dependents, availability of sea turtles, and culture significantly affect the supply of sea turtles in the Bahia Magdalena region. Too few have taken the long view of the role of humans in this "Grand Fugue". As one of many predators, it is imperative that humans begin to understand that our various activities are subject to basic ecological principles, such as the concepts of growth limitations imposed by scarcities and habitat debilitations. Most of human history (evolution, growth, colonizations, displacements, resource scarcity, competition for resources) are direct consequences of normal, natural climate fluctuations, and local, regional and global ecological responses. Early fisheries were subsistence levels, with some situations where fishing communities bartered or traded for goods from adjacent highlands or forest cultures. We have also become extremely vulnerable to any persistent climate changes. Following the Medieval Warm period (~900-1180), the onset of the Little Ice Age (LIA) brought changes in regional productivity, disease, and death that began the global transition from Feudal society to the "pay as you go" economics that now dominate the world's major economies. Over the recent two to three centuries humans have swarmed over the remaining terrain, and spread out onto the seas. Modern history relates the continuous growth, expansion and generalized superposition of industrial fisheries onto older coastal subsistence communities, initiating extensive competition, overexploitation, and with resultant dwindling resources and habitat destruction. I have started a Timeline of Fisheries Development that provides a framework of information upon which these facts are derived: <.http://www.monterey.edu/faculty/SharpGary/world/FisheryTimeline.html> I will continue to develop the Timeline, so that others might learn how humans resolve the issues of complex aquatic ecosystems, limited resource sharing, or not. Biological resources were sampled for twelve (12) months on Lakes Asejire and Oyan all in the forest belt of Nigeria. Two sectional questionnaire forms designed separately were administered to users (152 fisherfolks and 202 residents of immediate communities of the lakes) and expected visitors (275 residents of major cities near the lakes). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) on SPSS 17 for windows. On Lake Asejire game species accounted for 30.57% and 31.05% at Oyan. Species include Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, Hepsetus odoe, Hydrocinus spp, Lates niloticus, Clarias gariepinus. Season was significant on weight (p<0.05). Education was significant to willingness to tolerate recreationists (p<0.05), age and fishing experience had significant influence on rendering of assistance to recreationists (p<0.05). Economic and infrastructural development were reasons for desiring recreational fisheries. Willingness to visit was high, activities desired were boat cruising (40%), fishing (23%), swimming 23% and sight seeing (19%). 88.9% showed willingness to pay above NGN500 for entrance, sex was significant on amount to pay while education was significant on time of visit. The relative abundance of game species is equivalent to the required 1:3 ratio recommended for carnivore/forage ratio in angling ponds. This and the positive disposition of resource users and the willingness to pay are strong indications of success.
