In this study, we recover archival records and apply a rating curve approach to develop the first instrumental estimates of daily delta inflow and sediment loads to San Francisco Bay (1849 – 1929). The total sediment load is constrained using sedimentation/erosion estimated from bathymetric survey data to produce continuous daily sediment transport estimates from 1849 to 1955, the time period prior to sediment load measurements. We estimate that ~55% (45 – 75%) of the ~1500±400 million tons (Mt) of sediment delivered to the estuary between 1849 and 2011 was the result of anthropogenic alteration in the watershed that increased sediment supply. Also, the seasonal timing of sediment flux events has shifted because significant spring-melt floods have decreased, causing estimated springtime transport (April 1st to June 30th) to decrease from ~25% to ~15% of the annual total. By contrast, wintertime sediment loads (December 1st to March 31st) have increased from ~70% to ~80%. A ~35% reduction of annual flow since the 19th century along with decreased sediment supply has resulted in a ~50% reduction in annual sediment delivery. The methods developed in this study can be applied to other systems for which unanalyzed historic data exist. Next, we evaluate the general applicability of MTDE by testing an idealized two-dimensional numerical model, with a convergent cross-sectional profile, for eighty-one cases in which nondimensional numbers for friction, river flow, and convergence length scale are varied. The simulations suggest that MTDE is applicable to a variety of tidal systems. Model results and data analyses together suggest that MTDE works best with at least three gauges: a reference station near the river mouth, and two upstream gauges that respond strongly to distinct portions of the observed range of flow. The balance between tidal damping and amplifying factors determines the favorable location of the gauges. Compared to previous studies, the MTDE method improves the time resolution of estimates (from 2.5 to < 1 week) and is applicable to systems with mixed diurnal/semidiurnal tides. However, model results suggest that tide-induced residual flows such as the Stokes drift may still affect the accuracy of MTDE at seaward locations during periods of low river discharge. Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) OceanView, along with the Copernicus European Marine Core Service and other national and international programmes, has facilitated the development of coordinated validation activities among these centres. New metrics, assessing a wider range of ocean parameters, have been defined and implemented in real-time. An overview of recent progress and emerging international standards is presented here. Because no single hydrologic model is able to perfectly simulate the observed flow, multimodel combination techniques are developed to combine forecasts obtained from different models and to quantify the uncertainties with the goal of improving upon single-model performance. In this study, a comprehensive set of multimodel ensemble averaging techniques with varying complexities are investigated for operational forecasting over four river basins in the Western United States. Ensemble merging models are divided into three categories of simple, intermediate, and complex, and comparison is made between each class by using a bootstrap approach. Analysis suggests that model combination effectively improves most of the individual seasonal forecasts and can outperform the best forecast model. Simple average, median, Bates-Granger, constrained linear regression, and Bayesian model averaging optimized by expectation maximization showed better results compared with other methods over three basins. For the Rogue River basin, the intermediate and complex models outperformed most of the individual forecasts and the simple methods. Multimodeling techniques based on information criteria showed similar performances. Temperatures in the Tigris River, one of the largest rivers in the Middle East, are influenced by factors such as heat fluxes at the air-water and human activities such as direct discharge of water to the river. However, modeling and management of water temperature is limited by a paucity of in-situ data, which prevents calibration of models. In this study, we infill data gaps by estimating Tw using the thermal bands of both the Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 7 ETM+ sensors. These satellite-based estimates, typically measured once or twice a month with 60-120m resolution, are then used to develop a regression model that relates daily water temperature to daily air temperature and river flow. These estimates are used to define the Tw boundary conditions for a hydrodynamic and water quality model of the Tigris River based on a 2D implementation of the CE-QUAL-W2 (W2) numerical model. Initial results suggest that there is a significant agreement between modeled and remotely estimated data of Tw. Results suggest that short-wave solar radiation is the most important factor that controls seasonal Tw variations. However, anthropogenic influence is observed as a result of return irrigation flows and flows from Tharthar Lake. Year: 2016 Recent studies of flood risk at New York Harbor (NYH) have shown disparate results for the 100 year storm tide, providing an uncertain foundation for the flood mitigation response after Hurricane Sandy. Here we present a flood hazard assessment that improves confidence in our understanding of the region's present-day potential for flooding, by separately including the contribution of tropical cyclones (TCs) and extratropical cyclones (ETCs), and validating our modeling study at multiple stages against historical observations. The TC assessment is based on a climatology of 606 synthetic storms developed from a statistical-stochastic model of North Atlantic TCs. The ETC assessment is based on simulations of historical storms with many random tide scenarios. Synthetic TC landfall rates and the final TC and ETC flood exceedance curves are all shown to be consistent with curves computed using historical data, within 95% confidence ranges. Combining the ETC and TC results together, the 100 year return period storm tide at NYH is 2.70 m (2.51–2.92 at 95% confidence), and Hurricane Sandy's storm tide of 3.38 m was a 260 year (170–420) storm tide. Deeper analyses of historical flood reports from estimated Category-3 hurricanes in 1788 and 1821 lead to new estimates and reduced uncertainties for their floods and show that Sandy's storm tide was the largest at NYH back to at least 1700. The flood exceedance curves for ETCs and TCs have sharply different slopes due to their differing meteorology and frequency, warranting separate treatment in hazard assessments. As with previous altimeter missions, tides present both an opportunity and a challenge for the SWOT mission. The TOPEX/Jason class of altimeters have allowed high-accuracy mapping of open-ocean barotropic tides over their coverage latitudes (66°S to 66°N), but the inter-track spacing of these missions (~150 km) has limited their ability to map smaller-scale features such as shelf tides, coastal tides, and open-ocean internal tides. Because SWOT will measure sea surface height at unprecedented horizontal resolution, SWOT offers the chance to map shelf tides, coastal tides and open-ocean internal tides in unprecedented detail. In addition, the inclination of SWOT offers the chance to improve tide estimates poleward of 66°, up to the SWOT orbit inclination of 78°. At the same time, shelf tides, coastal tides, open-ocean internal tides, and high-latitude tides must be accurately removed from SWOT data before SWOT can be used to examine non-tidal signals such as mesoscale and submesoscale eddies, the main target of the SWOT oceanography mission. Shelf tides, coastal tides, and open-ocean internal tides will be difficult to remove not only because of their small horizontal scales but also because of their inherently more challenging predictability compared with open-ocean barotropic tides. For shelf and coastal tides one aspect of this is the greater number of constituents that must be considered because of possible compound tides and overtides generated by nonlinear interactions in shallow regions. An especially great challenge will be in estuaries, where the hydrology and oceanography mission interests intersect, and where the tides can be quite nonlinear and nearly unpredictable, with nonlinearity sometimes manifested by impressive tidal bores (Dronkers, 1964; LeBlond, 1978; Godin, 1999; Jay et al., 2011; among other works on river tides and their changes). Below, after reviewing the successes with open-ocean barotropic tides enabled by previous altimeter missions, we briefly review the progress-to-date, and work remaining, on shelf tides, coastal tides, open-ocean internal tides, and high-latitude tides as they pertain to the SWOT mission. In addition, we also discuss plans for tidal correction algorithms, the need for better bathymetry, especially in coastal regions, and the need for a coordinated effort to evaluate tidal models. Below, after reviewing the successes with open-ocean barotropic tides enabled by previous altimeter missions, we briefly review the progress-to-date, and work remaining, on shelf tides, coastal tides, open-ocean internal tides, and high-latitude tides as they pertain to the SWOT mission. In addition, we also discuss plans for tidal correction algorithms, the need for better bathymetry, especially in coastal regions, and the need for a coordinated effort to evaluate tidal models. Finally, the document concludes with some recommendations for SWOT-related tide model development efforts. Close
