Not all infi ll development has contributed to meeting design goals, prompting the City’s Bureau of Planning to launch the Infill Design Project in 2003. The Infill Design Project aims to improve the design of multi-dwelling and rowhouse development outside the Central City. This study supports the Infill Design Project by studying the design of new, multi-family infi ll development in a section of Outer Southeast Portland, Oregon. Through public outreach, this study identifies community design preferences and analyzes whether these preferences are being met in the private realm, the public realm and contextually. The studyfurther identifies reasons for the current state of multi-family infill development and provides recommendations to improve design quality of multi-family infill. This project was conducted under the supervision of Deborah Howe, Barry Messer, and Ethan Seltzer. Once a booming attraction, as time has past and the city has grown, the Halprin Sequence has been forgotten amongst the towers. With a rich history in urban development and design, the Halprin Sequence could offer much more to the people of Portland than it is currently. The surrounding street of Fourth Avenue is also underutilized. The street is primarily used by automobiles, and the sidewalks are not pleasant to walk through. For a green space network, the Halprin Sequence is in an ideal location. It is tucked away near university campus while surrounded by workplaces and residential housing. However, a major problem is that the surrounding buildings turn their backs to the Halprin Sequence creating a sense of isolation and disconnectedness. We propose strategic nodes and sites of interest along Fourth Avenue to activate the Sequence, as well as Fourth Avenue. Strategic development could act as a "spline" that connects Portland State University to the Halprin Sequence and adjacent communities. This project was conducted under the supervision of Donald J. In the wake of the Great Depression and as the logging trade declined, the area began to fall into disrepair and development shifted away from the Willamette River. By the 1950s, many of its 2,000+ inhabitants were low-income or elderly and living in small, poorly maintained apartments, shuffling from one to the next as they were forced out of their prior home. The neighborhood was also extremely diverse, housing numerous immigrant families, particularly Italian, Jewish, Chinese, and African American families. In 1955, the newly formed Portland Development Commission targeted a block of land in what was then considered part of South Portland as a test of the new Urban Renewal philosophy making the rounds in planning circles, at the behest of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee. It was decided that a 110 acre portion of the district would be razed in two phases. Interestingly, the district had originally been intended as the home for a new expo center or coliseum, with the remaining redevelopment occurring around it. This center would be just the sort of attraction to lure people to the city center, it was believed; these plans were scrapped, however, after conflicts between interested parties on each side of the Willamette resulted in the centerpiece of the project (later to be Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum) being relocated to the eastern side of the river. Inspired by the design principles of Le Corbusier and the budgets of major firms such as Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM), renewal pressed onward, with the forthcoming towers and plazas to be punctuated by greenspaces, among them a set of fountains crafted by Lawrence Halprin. Little, if anything, remains of the district as it had existed prior to the removal of the area’s residences, businesses, and the communities who resided there. Neighbors would like to see improvements made now to help improve Lents' image as a special place. Three areas were selected for attention: Imageability- The sense of being in a unique, cohesive neighborhood Streetscape quality- Pedestrian comfort and accessibility Getting "feet on the street" in Lents Town Center - Increasing pedestrian activity on the street. Our understanding of the Academic Village arose out of an exploration of connections between neighboring academic institutions – Portland State University, Oregon Health and Sciences University on Marquam Hill, and OHSU’s emerging campus on the South Waterfront – and the Corbett and Lair Hill neighborhoods. We discovered that people from these institutions and communities live, work, study, and play in a shared urban space, but that the potential for creating an Academic Village is bounded by the history and physical characteristics of that urban space. We would like to illustrate how an Academic Village can be a major asset to the city of Portland and its residents. By combining the resources and ideals of our academic institutions with the vitality of our urban and community institutions, our vision seeks to bring our academic and community nodes closer together at many different levels. By highlighting how barriers to interaction and connectivity can be overcome, we hope to pave the way for an Academic Village that will embody sustainable ideals, contribute to the economic health of our region, and foster a deeper “sense of place.” This project was conducted under the supervision of Donald J.
