This study utilizes hourly precipitation data from ground stations and satellite instruments to evaluate rainfall characteristics simulated by the NASA-Unified Weather Research and Forecasting (NU-WRF) regional climate model at horizontal resolutions of 4, 12, and 24 km over the Great Plains of the United States. We also examined the sensitivity of the simulated precipitation to different spectral nudging approaches and the cumulus parameterizations. The rainfall characteristics in the observations and simulations were defined as an hourly diurnal cycle of precipitation and a joint probability distribution function (JPDF) between duration and peak intensity of precipitation events over the Great Plains in summer. We calculated a JPDF for each data set and the overlapping area between observed and simulated JPDFs to measure the similarity between the two JPDFs. Comparison of the diurnal precipitation cycles between observations and simulations does not reveal the added value of high-resolution simulations. However, the performance of NU-WRF simulations measured by the JPDF metric strongly depends on horizontal resolution. The simulation with the highest resolution of 4 km shows the best agreement with the observations in simulating duration and intensity of wet spells. Spectral nudging does not affect the JPDF significantly. The effect of cumulus parameterizations on the JPDFs is considerable but smaller than that of horizontal resolution. The simulations with lower resolutions of 12 and 24 km show reasonable agreement but only with the high-resolution observational data that are aggregated into coarse resolution and spatially averaged. The focus of this study is to use batch experiments to investigate the heavy metal (Cu and Zn) removal efficiency of perlite and EarthliteTM to improve in-situ filtration systems for stormwater catchment basins. Stormwater samples from two field sites in Portland, OR, chosen to represent a high-use commercial site and high-traffic urban road, were characterized to inform experimental design and compare to values found in literature. The Linear, Freundlich, and Langmuir isotherm models were used to describe equilibrium data and determine partitioning coefficients for single metal batch studies. Both the Freundlich and Langmuir models fit most single metal batch systems, while Cu-Perlite, Zn-Perlite, and Zn-EarthliteTM, were best fit by the Langmuir model, R2 = 0.9594; 0.9538; 0.9811, respectively. Competitive adsorption behaviors for Cu and Zn were evaluated using a synthetic stormwater recipe where relative concentrations of Cu and Zn were maintained to be consistent with representative stormwater samples. Perlite showed a decrease in the sorption capacity of Cu and Zn in the presence of competing ions in solution. EarthliteTM showed no difference in the affinity for copper uptake between competitive and non-competitive batch experiments. EarthliteTM affinity for Zn decreased by two orders of magnitude in the competitive batch system. The results from this study will be applied to estimate filter lifetime for traditional and advanced stormwater filter systems. These results will inform experimental design in dynamic flow-through experiments using various filter media thereby improving filter design and implementation of stormwater best management practices. Written curriculum (such as the syllabus, reading list, and grading practices) continues to contribute to the erasure of the female student. Furthermore, hidden curriculum (lessons that are taught “unintentionally” such as norms or values), such as a teacher’s use of gendered language, or time spent with students of different genders, reflects this same problem as teachers unintentionally disempower the female voice in the classroom. The result is female students who are less confident in the classroom and the workplace later in life. To combat this issue, I present an alternative to the traditional English curriculum that is more gender inclusive and empowering. The syllabus will include not only suggestions for literature, but also ideas for leading class discussion, workshops, and assignments that serve to empower the young female student and empower male students with the skills necessary to combat continued gender issues. Should this class be taught, students would finish with a strong understanding of literature, vocabulary, and writing. However, students would also leave the class with a better knowledge of the complex topic of women's rights. Female students would have developed a more confident approach to learning, and a more empowered discourse. To this end daily observed and simulated precipitation are used to calculate different indices focusing solely on seasonality, event-timing, and variability in timing (persistence) of the precipitation. The climate model weights are estimated for each cell (6 × 6 km) of the Columbia River Basin using daily time series for the historical period 1970–1999 from the ten Global Climate Models (GCMs) participating to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project platform, Phase 5. The results show that BMA results in more than 15 % improvement/reduction in mean absolute error as compared to the individual GCMs. The improvement is, in general, higher for the MACA models than for the BCSD models. The results of variability in precipitation timing show that extreme precipitation events are mostly not persistent (i.e., occurring in different periods throughout the year), i.e., more than 75 % of the grid cells with an elevation above 900 m indicate persistence values less than 0.2 whereas nearly 70 % of the high elevation cells indicate such low persistence. Further we find that the variability in persistence is higher in high elevation cells than those with low elevation. The picture is different for MACA ensembles as the simulated persistence of extreme precipitation events is higher than that for the observed and BCSD datasets.
