Oxygen is completely essential for the process of oxidative phosphorylation by mitochondria, the intracellular organelle responsible for the majority of adenosine triphosphate production. Thus, understanding the unique properties of A. limnaeus mitochondria is of great interest. In this work, we describe the first complete mitochondrial genome (mtgenome) sequence of a single adult A. limnaeus individual and compare both coding and non-coding regions to several other closely related fish mtgenomes. Mitochondrial features were predicted using MitoAnnotator and polyadenylation sites were predicted using RNAseq mapping. To estimate the responsiveness of A. limnaeus mitochondria to anoxia treatment, we measure relative mitochondrial DNA copy number and total citrate synthase activity in both relatively anoxia-tolerant and anoxia-sensitive embryonic stages. Our cross-species comparative approach identifies unique features of ND1, ND5, ND6, and ATPase-6 that may facilitate the unique phenotype of A. limnaeus embryos. Additionally, we do not find evidence for mitochondrial degradation or biogenesis during anoxia/reoxygenation treatment in A. limnaeus embryos, suggesting that anoxia-tolerant mitochondria do not respond to anoxia in a manner similar to anoxia-sensitive mitochondria. We applied a unique index of biological characteristics and environmental exposures, experienced by each fish individually as it migrated downstream, in order to examine which factors most influence salmonid survival. High outflow volumes led to involuntary spill in 2011 and created an environment of supersaturated dissolved gas concentrations. In this environment, migrating smolt survival was strongly influenced by barometric pressure, fish velocity, and water temperature. The effect of these variables on survival was compounded by multiple dam passages compared to fish passing a single dam. Despite spatial isolation between dams in the Lower Columbia River hydrosystem, migrating smolt appear to experience cumulative effects akin to a press disturbance. In general, Chinook salmon and steelhead respond similarly in terms of survival rates and responses to altered environmental conditions. Management actions that limit dissolved gas concentrations in years of high flow will benefit migrating salmonids at this life stage. A complete understanding of how the various peak in the graphene Auger spectra occur is not yet available. Towards explaining these peaks a simulation which predicts the Auger energies of neutral free carbon has been scripted. Growth of graphene which is mostly likely to see the greatest implementation in industry occurs in chemical vapor deposition systems. In order to avoid time-consuming and potentially damaging transfer processes, a type of graphene growth which occurs at the interface of a nickel catalyst and the underlying substrate which requires no transfer is experimented with. Here, growths have occurred on a remote plasma inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition system at various gas ratios of methane to hydrogen, temperatures, and plasma conditions to explore growth optimization. The growths are subsequently analyzed using Raman spectroscopy, X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy. In general growths without plasma tended to be more graphite like and growths with plasma tended to be more diamond like. To estimate CO2 from NEE, two linear regressions were used which correlated with the temperature stress response of plants (>23.5 and 2 values of 0.81 and 0.83 respectively. Per-pixel CO2 flux was estimated for flights between 2011 (pre drought) and 2015 (during drought). This study showed a 25% (4.8 g / min) decrease in net carbon fixation between September 2011 and October 2014 over 34 km2. Also seen was a decrease in net carbon fixation over 7,737 km2 of 90.2% (18,863 g / min) between June 2013 to June 2015. Of the 411.6 km2 affected by the 2013 Rim Fire, this study showed a decrease in net carbon fixation of 85.5% (1,574 g / min) between June 2013 and June 2015. It is estimated that the entire Rim Fire (1,041 km2) could have caused a total decrease in net carbon fixation totaling 3,982 grams per minute from 2013 to 2015. The ecophysiological model was based on winter temperature relationships with nutria survival. We developed correlative statistical models using the Software for Assisted Habitat Modeling and biologically relevant climate data with a global extent. We applied the ecophysiological based model to several global circulation model (GCM) predictions for mid-century. We used global coypu introduction data to evaluate these models and to explore a hypothesized physiological limitation, finding general agreement with known coypu distribution locally and globally and support for an upper thermal tolerance threshold. Global circulation model based model results showed variability in coypu predicted distribution among GCMs, but had general agreement of increasing suitable area in the USA. Our methods highlighted the dynamic nature of the edges of the coypu distribution due to climate non-equilibrium, and uncertainty associated with forecasting future distributions. Areas deemed suitable habitat, especially those on the edge of the current known range, could be used for early detection of the spread of coypu populations for management purposes. Combining approaches can be beneficial to predicting potential distributions of invasive species now and in the future and in exploring hypotheses of factors controlling distributions. In the laboratory, we used drying and rewetting experiments to test whether the strong species-specific effects of relative humidity on distributions predicted by the models were correlated with physiological characters. Key Results: We found that the three most common bryophytes in geothermal communities were significantly affected by three distinct distribution drivers: temperature, light, and relative humidity. Aulacomnium palustre, whose distribution is significantly affected by relative humidity according to our model, and which occurs in high-humidity sites, showed extreme signs of stress after drying and never recovered optimal values of PSII efficiency after rewetting. Campylopus introflexus, whose distribution is not affected by humidity according to our model, was able to maintain optimal values of PSII efficiency for 48 hr at 50% water loss and recovered optimal values of PSII efficiency after rewetting. Conclusions: Our results suggest that species-specific environmental stressors tightly constrain the ecological niches of geothermal bryophytes. Strain ST65T grew anaerobically with inorganic carbon as a carbon source and with elemental sulfur as an electron donor and nitrate as an electron acceptor producing sulfate and ammonium. It was also able to grow by disproportionation of elemental sulfur, thiosulfate and sulfite. Sulfate was not utilized as an electron acceptor. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the isolate belongs to a deep lineage in the phylum Thermodesulfobacteria . The team is tasked to start from defining the product based on customer requirements and market conditions, designing the hardware and software aspects of the smart glasses, and performing various tests to ensure the quality and reliability of the smart glasses prototype. The development of the smart glasses is the responsibility of the R&D group, the team project consists of people with unique skills from various groups in R&D organization. The success criteria adopted for this prototype: ● Capable of communicating to the smartphone using Android, iOS, and Windows phone Operating Systems ● Capable of displaying the information associated with cycling, such as: heart rate, calories burned, distance traveled, speed, and all other data specified in the prototype specifications ● Pass the field testing during beta-release phase to limited users ● Pass the extreme or corner-case testing in the lab, such as humidity, temperature cycling, water resistance, and all other tests specified in the qualification plan Upon the conclusion of this project, a well-designed and reliable prototype will be delivered to other groups such as manufacturing and production, as well as sales and marketing, for further developments to enter the market and high-volume manufacturing. Eleven behaviors were observed to create an activity budget for the orangutans to be used to analyze the effect of different variables on their behavior. The independent variables examined were crowd size, temperature, weather, test day, and individual (in regards to the orangutan). The behaviors focused on with relevance as potential welfare indicators were time spent looking at visitors, covering head, and time not visible. Behavior data in rainy and sunny weather were subsequently compared to determine if certain behaviors were responding to weather or other variables. Large crowd size was found to be correlated with decreased time spent not visible and increased time spent covering head when weather was sunny. Additionally, large crowd size was correlated with decreased time spent not visible and covering head in times of rainy weather. However, crowd size did not have a significant effect on these variables. A larger sample size needed to detect significance in the effect of independent variables on the dependent variables with the given amount of variance.
