Winemaker Eric Weisinger and the late Arnold Kohnert on the crush pad at Weisinger’s of Ashland as fruit from Kohnert’s Pompadour Vineyard is delivered. Kohnert’s vineyard, later managed by Randy Gold, is used in Weisinger’s Petite Pompadour Bordeaux blend. Kohnert, one of the pioneers of Rogue Valley viticulture, was known for producing the best Bordeaux grapes in the valley at is vineyard established east of Ashland in 1983, where he planted six acres to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Semillon. Kohnert kept meticulous records of his vineyard’s climate and production, replacing one clone with another to improve quality. Sharing his experience with others, he continually strove to improve winegrowing in the Rogue Valley.
